All of those "weird sounds" are Edward Van Halen being the master of hard rock and metal guitar. This particular song was EVH and Sammy Hagar creating late 1980s MAGIC. I heard this on the radio late one night around 1990 and made me learn guitar. I later went to Van Halen's 1996 Balance tour as a teenager and weeks later bought a Peavey Wolfgang. Still have it and still play it today. I'll never forget you, Edward. Thank you for everything.

Hi This was Sammy Hagar on vocals and 5150 was Van Halen’s first album with Sammy after parting ways with David Lee Roth. David Lee Roth is absolutely a great frontman and I love the Van Halen albums with him as lead vocalist. Sammy is also an awesome frontman with a much better voice, hands down! The songs with Sammy have more depth, substance and also include more collaboration than previous Van Halen albums with David. Sammy in the studio and especially live adds more energy and positivity within the band than with David Lee Roth. Sammy was not afraid to perform David Lee Roth era songs and the band performed songs from Sammy’s solo career. A great example of the latter is a 1989 performance in Tokyo of “There’s Only One Way To Rock” with Eddie and Sammy both playing guitar. Thanks for sharing your reactions to various bands/vocalists. It’s fun to see you discovering these new songs to you!

The notes you're referring to in the solo are tapped harmonics, a trick Ed used quite a bit in different songs.
@woodch7 ай бұрын
It's one of his most distinctive "tricks" I think-- If you hear that kinda of sound, you can almost be sure Eddie's playing it. It's a difficult technique to get right every time, and he just had it absolutely mastered. You fret a note normally, and then you tap the string at JUST THE RIGHT SPOT to cause the vibration to change frequency, but not mute out. It's SO difficult, especially in the middle of a solo.

The car alarm sound was one of Eddie’s many trademark licks & tricks. He’s playing all keyboards too
@sumonjamal16537 ай бұрын
One of the reasons Sammy Hagar (vocals) replaced David Lee Roth in Van Halen was because Eddie Van Halen (guitar) was also playing a lot of keyboards on the new songs and he didn't like the direction... By 1985, the original Van Halen ran its course and they were looking for a new singer... Sammy Hagar was a veteran singer from the 70's band Montrose, and he had become a solo star by that point... He got a call from Eddie Van Halen to try out working on new Van Halen songs that he had written. Hagar went to Eddie Van Halen's studios and was impressed by the new songs and signed up to join Van Halen in 1986 and that year, the band scored a #1 album in the US w/ '5150'... 'Dreams' was one of the hit singles, as well as "Why can't this be love" ... 'Summer nights'... 'Love walks in'... Eddie Van Halen was an accomplished player as well as a top tier guitarist, and even though there were a lot of synthesizers on the '5150' album, he also played some of his best guitar work on those songs 🤘🔥 Sammy Hagar's lyrics were also different from David Lee Roth's (who wrote rather witty, tongue-in-cheek lyrics)... Hagar wrote more heartfelt lyrics and was a different kind of frontman.

I think the difference is David lee Roth was a character first and a vocalist second . Sammy was a musician first and a singer second. IMO.

The guitar and sounds are all Eddie and this is Sammy Hagar singing. David Lee Roth was the singer until 1985, Dave was great but he never had the vocal range Sammy had. You should watch Best of Both Worlds from the Live Without A Net DVD and Eddie's guitar solo, one of the best solos of all time.

Although - I shall admit 2 things: that I've never been a Van Halen's huge fan; and that, when I was informed that Dave Lee Roth was no longer VH's vocalist and who was the new one, I didn't believe Sammy Hagar would make it. But I was wrong, he did such a good job in this song and in another one - I strongly recommend that you watch the official music video of "I can't stop loving you".

I’ve seen both Van Halen and Van “Hagar” in concert. Each has their place. With David, they were more true hard rock. With Sammy, pure rock but more “main stream”. Eddie, no matter when, is likely one of the top 5 guitarists…ever. Maybe not as technically sounds as,say, Stevie Ray Vaughn. But his experiments have him sounding like a piano…a cello…a whale…a synthesizer…all from what he could do with a guitar. And NO pedals! And David Lee couldn’t sing this song in his best days.

Sammy, not David. When Sammy came on, it allowed Eddie to be on the synthesizer a lot more as Sammy can play the guitar, very well in fact.

There is a guitarist that took things to another level of making unique sounds with the instrument; far beyond a "car alarm". His name is Tom Morello and played for Rage Against The Machine and Audioslave. You might find the vocalists of the 2 different bands also highly entertaining. Rage feature Zack de la Rocha, and Audioslave featured Chris Cornell. Suggestions: RATM featuring Maynard James Keenan - "Know Your Enemy" Audioslave: "Shadow on the Sun"
