@@MaddyReactions VH's original band name was Mammoth when they just starting out in the mid to late 70's until they found out another band legally has Mammoth as their name. So, original frontman, David Lee Roth suggested Van Halen brothers use their last name as band name. Back in 2015, my friends and I went to see VH live in concert with their original frontman, DLR with Eddie's son and Alex's nephew, Wolfgang (Wolfie) on Bass. VH's original Bassist was not invited back for this tour that upset Sammy Hagar, singer here on video. But Eddie wanted his song play in the band. Wolfie continues on the Legacy with his own band, MammothWVH. He is the sole heir to his father's intellectual property (music and personal recording studio, famed 5150). In California, there is a law banning recording music professionally for pay, but Eddie records his own music, no one else.

About your Bill and Ted remark. You are not completly wrong. Bill and Ted were huge fans of Van Halen. Ted is even wearing a Van Halen t shirt during the whole film. They also discussed needing Eddie in the band. I like that you heard that and caught on. Glad you liked the video. As an EVH guitar nerd there is a lot of small details in this video. I am a huge Van Halen fan and I love to play guitar like Eddie. Im glad you watched this amazing treasure. I know it is answered but Ill say it also. "Van Halen" is Eddie's and Alex's last name (they're brothers). Their first name of the band was "Mammoth." But later they found out it was already taken so Dave Lee Roth wanted to use Van Halen becuase it sounded powerful. Also no one could say they took it because it is their name. That guitar his playing is iconic he built as a teenager in 1976 he took parts from other guitars and built it. He called it 👉Frankenstrat👈 I built one about the same time but i didn't sound that good. I called it 👉 Crap-a-strat 👈 I still have it but have not played in 30 yrs. 😂 I got electrocuted building it. My theory as a 16 year old kid if 12 volt works good then 120 volts would be better. Well it don't. 🤣😂🤣😁

Van Halen is a Dutch name... Edward Van Halen and his brother Alex Van Halen (drums) were immigrants from the Netherlands... Their father was a musician who moved his family to California from Europe... Eddie and Alex grew went to school in Pasadena and started playing music in the late 60's as kids. Alex played guitar while Eddie played drums... but they switched w/ Alex playing drums. Eddie also took piano lessons, but was not inclined to learn that way... he played by ear. His talent could not be measured in quantity, only quality... While still in school, Eddie and Alex formed a band and started playing backyard parties and school gigs w/ Eddie playing guitar and singing... His first guitar was called 'Frankenstein' because he built it himself from parts of discarded guitars (he was too penniless to buy a guitar) Eddie would rent a P.A. system from another kid named David Lee Roth, but realized it was cheaper to have Roth become the band's lead singer while Eddie could concentrate on playing guitar. David Lee Roth came from an affluent Jewish family and had the resources to make a band... Unfortunately, he was not the best vocalist, but he was determined to become a rock star... In 1973, he suggested the band be named Van Halen... it sounded like a marquee name (like Santana, or Fleetwood Mac) and recognized Eddie Van Halen's talent on guitar would bring in people to see him play live. In 1974, Michael Anthony (bass) joined Van Halen and did backup vocals for the band... Gene Simmons of Kiss saw Van Halen perform in a Hollywood club in 1976 and offered to help them get signed... He funded their demos, but Van Halen would not be signed until 1977. When recording their 1978 debut album, Eddie Van Halen played this warm-up that he often did before shows... it was recorded and became the track 'Eruption'... the explosive guitar solo changed guitar playing forever and set the stage for the guitar heroes of the 80's, like Yngwie J. Malmsteen, George Lynch of Dokken, Jake E. Lee of Ozzy Osbourne's band, Steve Vai, and so many others. Van Halen opened for Black Sabbath on tour in 1978 and stole the show every night... the first Van Halen album sold 10 million copies in the US and made Eddie Van Halen the guitar legend, and David Lee Roth the ultimate rock star... Eddie Van Halen played the solo on Michael Jackson's song 'Beat it' (he did it for free!) and started playing keyboards as well. However, w/ stardom come excesses... and Van Halen fell prey to the drugs and alcohol... runaway egos... Van Halen was riding high in 1984 w/ another 10 million selling album '1984' and #1 single 'Jump'... & were huge on MTV... In 1985, news shocked Van Halen fans that David Lee Roth was out of Van Halen. Veteran solo rocker Sammy Hagar joined Van Halen in 1986 (he's the singer in this video) and Van Halen released 4 albums that went #1 on the US charts... But in 1996, a split w/ Hagar came... a reunion w/ David Lee Roth never happened... Van Halen released 1 album 'Van Halen III' w/ singer Gary Cherone (Eddie Van Halen played all the guitars, keyboards ...most of the bass and drums on the record) but the record sold disappointingly. Eddie Van Halen was diagnosed w/ cancer around 2000 and a Van Halen reunion w/ Sammy Hagar in 2004 was a disaster after Eddie Van Halen was struggling w/ addictions, a divorce, and was in very bad shape... In 2007, Eddie's son Wolfgang Van Halen helped Van Halen reunite w/ David Lee Roth to tour (bassist Michael Anthony was not included) ...but only 1 record was released in 2012... Van Halen did their final tour in 2015. Edward Van Halen could have given us more music in his last decade, but he never did for some reason... His cancer returned by 2017 and he passed away in 2020... (R.I.P.) Wolfgang Van Halen has recently released solo records as Mammoth WVH w/ him performing all the instruments.

I was in the Navy in 1978 and went to sea in June and got back from deployment in September, and the Rock and Roll world had suffered an earthquake or a hurricane or something (maybe both) and it was called Van Halen. That first album changed the whole Rock and Roll landscape. I didn't know anyone who had heard anything like what Eddie Van Halen was doing. There was a new "Sheriff in town" and he set down a whole new yardstick for guitar players, and what could be done with a guitar. From that point on it was a whole new ball game and Eddie was the pitcher. I'm not sure anyone ever really caught up to his "fast ball."

Eddie (almost more than anyone else) was that image of the 80's shredding legend that Bill & Ted, and also every teenage guitarist at the time was aspiring to. He pioneered many of these techniques. He grew up with a classical music background and when the lights go to blue you can tell. He makes the guitar sound like a violin and a cello, it's amazing. He would refine and reorder it to perfection over the years, and when I finally got to see them in 1993, it was magic. Damn near the only I remembered leaving the venue that night. The individual melodies are solo pieces or intros to songs on their albums both past and future from this recording. They are "3:16", "Eruption", "Cathedral", the intros to "Mean Streets" and "Little Guitars" all joined by Eddie going full Eddie. I had this VHS concert tape as a teen and wore it out in many spots trying to see how he played things. Eddie was one of the greatest.

One comment said the Eddie rewrote Michael Jackson's "Beat It." We he actually did was play the guitar solo on "Beat It." He did NOT get credit for it, he did not get paid for it. He got a call was asked to play the solo. He showed up at the studio. He had a brief meeting with Michael. Laid down his solo track and was gone in a 1/2 hour. Eddie "WROTE" most if not all the songs for Van Halen and guess what... he couldn't even read music. By the way, the reason he has such a unique sound is that he built that guitar basically from spare parts. It's a stratocaster body and he installed different pick-ups. Don't remember the specifics. Because of this, his guitar is call the "Frankenstrat." He also runs his amps and a lower voltage to get that sound. Very inovative. The genius of Eddie Van Halen. And the band is called Van Halen because Edward, and his brother Alex, founded the band together.

Eddie was so far ahead of his time and the techniques and flashy tricks have inspired so many modern day guitarists. He influenced my guitar playing as well. Crazy Fact; Dimebag Darrell (guitarist of Pantera) was such a fan of Eddie and helped influenced his playing so much that when Dime was assasinated, Eddie put THIS guitar in the coffin and is buried with him.

Hey, if you want to pause a video for a reaction then that's what you do. People that complain about that can just go see the original video if they don't want any interruptions; there's no room for that kind of complaint in a video purposely made for this. *This is a reaction video* so it's perfectly alright to give your reactions. I'm really glad to see the newer generations giving a listen to the kind of music I grew up with. So far, I've seen a wholly positive experience from new listeners, forming their own opinions & basically ignoring what the current state of entertainment tries to tell them...Heck, when they make something that nearly everyone hates, they blame the audience for not liking the crap they make. Making reaction videos based on a high number of fan suggestions is the best way to let people make up their own dang mind & having freedom of opinion. I've had a long-standing theory (ever since my teens when I heard his solo on their first album, simply titled "Van Halen) on how Eddie could play distinct & individual notes so fast. I came to the conclusion that his fingers have to be going literally super-sonic just to get every note in. Yeah, I'm deliberately exaggerating here, but it's not by much. 😉 One thing you may notice is that Eddie isn't using any foot pedals for modulation or distortion. Back in those days they had no auto-tuners or sequencers, no computer-controlled correction. *What you heard was what they played* & that takes more talent than pretty much any "modern" musician that relies so heavily on electronics just to make something sound "passable." There are exceptions to this general observation but it's very few spread very far apart, mainly on individual songs. Eddie's played like this during his whole career, breaking conventions & continually setting the bar higher, proving that guitar skills have no cap. Another thing you may have noticed is that the audience is nearly dead silent while Eddie's playing & venting their love/excitement during his pauses. They wanted to hear every single note, no matter how high their adrenaline levels. Also, by his gestures & facial expressions with the audience you can see the mutual respect & devotion going back & forth. It's like Eddie was saying, "I've taken the time. I've put in the work. I know what I'm capable of doing. I'm glad that I have this time to show you what that is." From the very first time I heard Eddie play up until this very day (& still going), no matter how many times I listen, he still brings chills along my spine. I'm not a betting man but if I were, I'd wager that the spirits of Eddie's guitars (he built most of his own guitars) went with him to Heaven...Because he certainly played the Hell *out* of them.

I was lucky enough to grow up with Van Halen. Saw them probably 15 times. Edward & Alex Van Halen were other worldly musicians & talents, as is Sammy Hagar. And I think Michael Anthony is a fantastic Bass Player too. These guys were amazing. Nothing else ever like them. I miss knowing Edward is with us. He, and they... went everywhere with me - my entire Life. I still ride with them.

There is no one that could play the guitar like Eddie Van Halen. Eddie's rythm and timing were unmatched. The genius of Eddie was that he made the guitar sound anything like a guitar. Eddie Van Halen permanently changed guitar playing and in so the course and tapestry of Rock music. He was a true virtuoso and is considered by many the greatest electric guitarist of all time. He was arguably the most innovative. His nay-sayers are sadly simply jealous. Isolating and slowing his guitar tracts exposes the extreme number of individual notes he could play in a second. Not satisfied with ‘off-the-shelf’ guitars he built his own. Les Paul once commented ‘There are only two people who know how to build a (electric) guitar; me and Eddie Van Halen...’ I saw Van Halen in concert several times back-in-the-day. Live and in real time he would play so fast it was impossible to visually follow what he was doing. His hands were just a blur. Gone but never forgotten what a gift to music was Edward Van Halen. He was in a class all by himself and one of one...

Great reaction, as usual ;-) The story goes Eddie's critics didn't believe this skill was possible and that the timing was sped up. The technology was not available back then to edit cigarette smoke in videos, so he put a lit cigarette on the neck of the guitar to prove it was played live. Played his guitar as if it were an extension of his body and he could feel every note #RIP

Alex Van Halen (drums) actually had a guitar first and Eddie played drums. However while Eddie was out doing his paper route Alex took over his drum kit and the rest is history!

I saw them live back in their Heyday three times but I still love the first one the most. And it was a very small arena in the iconic Century II complex in downtown Wichita on their first album Tour on or around the 4th of July and they were just starting to play songs from their second album. It was so hot and claustrophobic but they rocked so hard and people were shooting off bottle rockets inside there and openly walking around with a fifth of whiskey and other accoutrements, and this was actually comment at the time but they Rock so hard and it some point somebody started shooting Roman candles out and down onto the stage, and David Lee Roth kind of stopped song in the middle of it and openly challenged whoever shot that come down and get his ass personally kicked. And I'm using nice words there compared to what I remember, I was in tenth-grade at most, laugh.

Great reaction!! and I love that you referenced Bill and Ted's...because at the beginning of the first movie: Bill: Ted, while I agree that, in time, our band will be most triumphant. The truth is, Wyld Stallyns will never be a super band until we have Eddie Van Halen on guitar. Ted: Yes, Bill. But, I do not believe we will get Eddie Van Halen until we have a triumphant video. Bill: Ted, it's pointless to have a triumphant video before we even have decent instruments. Ted: Well, how can we have decent instruments when we don't really even know how to play? The Dutch Van Halens were classically trained and both played piano and composed, somehow they settled on drums for Alex and guitar for Eddie which he clearly showed promise in! There is a lot of Bach in Eddie's solos. I think Hendrix might have done "hammer on" like Eddie, if he had lived, but Eddie is the virtuoso! I totally respect these solos and I am a Zappa fan! I saw Van Hagar as one of my first concerts, and I liked Sammy otherwise, and he had great guitar chops that Dave never tried for, but I still with I had seen like "Fair Warning" Van Halen. This performance tracks back through the Dave years and all the guitar ideas he had then. The live show was amazing, but you should listen to the studio track.

The bands original lead singer David Lee Roth suggested that they name the band Van Halen after the two brothers last name. Eddie and Alex Van Halen. Their original name was Mammoth, Eddie’s son Wolfgang Van Halen uses that name today for his current band.

Not really, Bill and Ted referenced them, which is probably why it's stuckk in your head. Notables from the soundtrack are Extreme and Tora Tora and Shark Island. Kiss used a cover to sing the main theme in the sequel. Looks like somone covered the Van Helen in Van Halen for you. Many side notes to Van Halen, but Eddie built that guitar he's playing because back in the day he could not afford one so he built one out of parts from other guitars and other Pieces of gear. During their club days he would never let anyone get a close look at it and would play with his back to the audience so no one could see his technique. Funny enough, Eddie started on the drums and Alex started on guitar, then they switched. So you don't get confused one day, The lead vocals for Van Halen's first five albums was David Lee Roth While Sammy Hagar was having a successful solo career after Leaving Montrose. Sam joined VH in 86 I think and also for about five albums. Both versions are different but good. Just a preference thing. I'm a Van 'Hagar' kind of guy. Thanx Maddie.

first the man could not only walk but fly and play like that at the same time. hopefully you have heard the original version and then imagine hearing that version for the first time with no mellow intro the first time i heard it was on a pair of according to the nameplate on the back .."pioneer concert installation speakers" they were only about 3 ft tall so i guess for a small hall or something not a stadium from a kenwood 140 watt amp. i could feel it in my ears i was so close .. why i can still hear good at 60 is a mystery to me .. i have 4,000watts in my car now.. when we played it for the first time it was a crashing wave that washed over us then ran back down the beach .. then crashed again and you sat there stunned until the last note faded .. then the next song started and you about jumped in surprise .. and kept playing the whole thing over and over.. bill and ted was modeled more after van halen then the other way around.. and many of the different styles you noticed in it are actually similar to many VH songs over the years one part reminds me of mean streets another a song with sammy sorry i can't recall every flash in my mind and i'm not going to dissect it to name them but i think many fans would agree.. final trivia quote "eddie was originally going to be the drummer but while he was working to pay for the drums alex got better at them so they traded "
