Welcome to what many consider the greatest song of all time! And although the live performance is iconic, I hope you treat yourself to listening to the original studio recording from their fourth album in 1971. It is pure brilliance! Jimmy Page, who is considered one of the greatest guitarists of all time, intended to have the band mix both light and heavy in their music. And that is partly where the band name comes from. Led for heavy and Zeppelin for light!… Please react to the studio version of Whole Lotta Love from their second album in 1969 one of the greatest riff rockers of all time. Thanks!

Another version is that when they formed the group they decided to give it this name in reference to the fact that if it didn't work. Its fall would be like that of the Hindenburg zeppelin but made of lead. I don't know if it's true, if not as they say in Italy, if not e vero e ben trobatto.😅

At the time, NONE of Led Zep thought much of the song, and that it would become an epic anthem for 50 years. Unlike the Beatles, who created incredible chemistry by years of playing together, Led Zepp NEVER played together as a band even once, and barely knew each other, when they thrown together within a few weeks, out of an emergency, when the Yardbirds disintegrated leaving Jimmy Page with an unfilled touring contract. The most perfect chemistry in music history was a lottery ticket.

The band name comes from a conversation when they were starting out. Jimmy Page is the guitarist and was in the 60s band The Yardbirds and in order to honor contractual obligations Page put the band together with new member as the other Yardbirds members quit. They called the band the New Yardbirds but after meeting their obligations they needed a name the conversation with member of the band The Who told Page the group would go over like a lead balloon - so from their came Led Zeppelin and the rest is history. Also, Page is one of the greatest guitarist and as a matter of fact the Yardbirds were the source of three of rocks greatest guitarist, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page.

Not quite correct. Page was told that he couldn't continue using the "New Yardbirds" name for the post Yardbirds group. Keith Moon and John Entwistle said that a super group with both Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page would "go over like a lead balloon". Page adapted the comment, their manager suggested taking the "a" out of lead and they changed balloon to zeppelin.

@@AxelFoleyDetroitLions Yeah, that's a crazy title, and it appears twice on two different recordings, slightly altered. There's the Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp, and the basic Bron-Yr-Aur (no "Stomp", a shorter instrumental which sounds a bit like some kind of reprise of the original, appearing on Physical Graffiti). I think one may also be spelled with just the "Y" (not "Yr"), but I spell them the same with the "Yr" - it's all confusing enough as it is.

Dig deep on youtube and all will be revealed. Page could not play like most of these guitar masters, but only in his wildest dreams .Here's one example amongst possibly hundreds of other Master guitarists..... For those of us who were fortunate enough to be teens when Zep burst upon the scene, it was always incredible how they could come out with one great, not good, but great song upon song, album after another. Then when they could produce such insane stuff like this, it was just mind blowing, because all of it was just soo different. U never knew what to expect, except to expect greatness. we were blessed with the fact that the Mighty Zep was just interested in making the music they wanted to, not trying to produce commercial stuff that would fit on 45's so they could make money. When Bonzo died, R and R was never the same.

If you listen to the album version of the solo you will hear that it sounds a little different from the live version you listen to. That is because Page had four different versions of the "Stairway" guitar solo, and every time he played the solo live he played one of the four different versions. I got lucky, and saw Zep live in 1977 in Baton Rouge, La only a few days before the tour was cancelled due to Robert Plants infant son dying.

Led Zeppelin was an English band created in 1968 by guitarist Jimmy Page, who also produced all their albums. In addition to Jimmy, there was bassist and keyboardist John Paul Jones, drummer John Bonham, and vocalist and harmonica player Robert Plant. They played what was called "hard rock/heavy blues" but played a variety of styles. They disbanded in 1980 with the passing of Bonham. As you mentioned, the guitar is a Gibson double neck, EDS-1275, which has a 12-string guitar on the top neck and a 6-string on the bottom. It allows you to play either without having to switch guitars. For this song, he uses the 12-string for everything except the solo, where he switches to 6-string. According to Jimmy, he took the name from a comment from The Who drummer, Keith Moon. Before creating Zeppelin (and before joining Jeff in the group The Yardbirds), Jimmy was a session guitarist and his good friend (and fellow guitar genius) Jeff Beck asked him to help play on his solo record project on a song called "Beck's Bolero". In addition to Jimmy, they had session bassist John Paul Jones (who would later join what would become Led Zeppelin), Keith Moon, and keyboardist Nicky Hopkins. This group of musicians seemed to blend so well, they half serious/half joking said they should form their own band. Moon said a band like that would go over like a "lead balloon" (meaning they'd be failures) then switched it to "lead Zeppelin". Jimmy remembered the comment and liked the opposites of the word meanings, so he dropped the "a" in lead so people wouldn't pronounce it like "leed" and used it as the name of the new band he would create.

Hi ya Maddy, Noel from the uk here , in 1969 the band were playing their first gig together in a pub in London and they sounded so unique that the owner said you’re either going to be famous or go down like a lead balloon which is a common saying here, as they were yet un named they made the necessary adjustment as a balloon doesn’t sound very Rock so they became Led Zepplin that is the story and appears to be true as far as i am aware, i have a bootleg copy made at that very concert in the pub and they were great from the start 👍

Part of the beauty, the mystery of this song, it's a "secret" chord progression, that does not complete itself, there is no real resolution at the end, it just circles back on itself, much like "Hotel California", it is a perfect tale told musically, it technically never ends...brilliant!

Led Zepplin stands for the guys in the band laughing when they formed and coming up with a band name - this band is gonna fall down and fail like a lead balloon - they went on to become one of the biggest - if not the biggest bands in the "Classic Rock" era - and this song is the most iconic songs of virtually any era - to this day - the fact that you are reacting to it (I think this was a live recording from 1971 - almost 60 years ago!) speaks volumes to how this song has stood the test of time - Also - I subscribed to you because of your reaction to - Rich Men North Of Richmond - keep up the good work - and if you're not on Rumble please make a MaddyReaction accounts too - you will absolutely blow up there

Keep checking out the many sides of Led Zep. I am 74 and saw them like this, Live at Long Beach Arena back on the 1975 Tour. Tickets..$10.50. for a 3 1/2 hour show. Peace & Love. Indiana waving. I live not far away from Robert Plant the singer. I bumped into him in a pub in Wolverley a little village near a town called Kidderminster in England a few years back. Nice bloke. Just walked in on his own no fanfare just had a pint of beer then left. Really down to earth. Good reaction BTW.

Yes. That guitarist is one of the greatest of all time. Jimmy Page. The greats: Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Edward Van Halen, Eric Clapton. Jimmy Page was my greatest influence and inspiration when I picked up a guitar for the first time more than 50 years ago. I eventually found my own style and voice on guitar, but there will always be some Jimmy Page in virtually everything I play. BTW, in concert back then Zeppelin played for 3+ hours a night. Their song Dazed and Confused clocked in at more than 20 minutes live back then. Their stamina was amazing. I saw them 3 times live. Yes, Jimmy Page is one of the greats.

Jimmy Page is the Guitarist and yes, he is always mentioned in top 3 of all-time greatest guitarists. Robert Plant is vocals. John Paul Jones is on keyboards and bass, and John Bonham is the drummer who died in 1980 and the band broke up after. Extremely talented! Zeppelin is a German word for what we call a "blimp". The story is told that the drummer for the band the "Who", critiqued led zeppelin in the early days, not thinking much of them, said they would go over like a "lead zeppelin", or a lead blimp/balloon. Jimmy page heard that and took the name.

If you think this was some awesome guitar playing, check out "Dazed and Confused" from the same concert. (Madison Square Garden 1973)....it's 26 uninterrupted minutes of guitar virtuosity, including playing with a cello bow. Ans yes Jimmy Page is considered one of the best guitarists ever by many and the band Led Zeppelin THE best Rock band ever by most.

Zepplin & Pink Floyd are 2 of the biggest rabbit holes you'll go down here darlin! the double-neck is 12 strings on the top and 6 strings on the bottom neck. 2 distinct sounds and he switches between the 2 throughout the song. saw them back in 79' in Louisiana.

You picked out the main quality that many other commenters miss. The greatness in their music is their ability to create a 'feeling/ emotion' with their music. Playing dazzlingly fast guitar solos, or heavy and loud riffs is relatively easy. To create and play music that creates emotions in your audience is far more difficult and Led Zeppelin are one of the bands that do this so well. The thing that gets me about this song is that it starts off as a quiet ballad but ends up as loud, heavy rock and they have managed to take you through this transition without you really noticing. Another band from that era that creates emotion with their music is Pink Floyd.

My mom died a year ago, and as i processed it over the next few months, I found some comfort in the lines "There's a feeling I get when I look to the west, and my spirit is crying for leaving. In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees and the voices of those who stand looking". And I realized what a Tolkien-esque verse that is

Hey Maddy I love this genre "reaction" from younger people reacting to music that did not all the same like it does today. Maddy i can tell that you get it. The thing about Led Zepplin is this, The Greatest Guitar Jimmy Page, The Greatest Rock singer Robert Plant, also by far the Greatest Drummer in Rock History Jon Bonam and then the 4th member John Paul Jones who composed these songs and could play any instument, usally on bass or keyboards created the greatest Rock Songs. Its so great to see you enjoy this after having to endure 3 million hiphop/rap songs with a total of maybe 3 different melodies/beats

Hi Maddy nice reaction! Legendary band, song and performance! Tons of comments below, so don't want to duplicate anyone, but here is some different context to consider ... *VH1* (old cable music channel (like MTV) that used to source contemporary music, and older stuff for audiences before the internet completely took over our lives) did a huge show near the end of the Millenium on *The 100 Greatest Acts* of all time. The results were achieved by a voting system which included musical artists, music critiques, and music journalists. LZ finished 3rd behind only the Beatles and Micheal Jackson. This list was revised in 2010. These guys were the real deal! Enjoy the music, look forward to more!
