Now imagine hearing a lot of this stuff for the first time in 1978 like we did back then when NOBODY was playing like that and disco ruled the world. It was fucking mind blowing and game changing. The whole first album just changed it all, for better or worse

I remember hearing them on the radio in 1978 when I just started playing guitar. It was a hell of a time for music. 2 years prior, I had heard Boston and my mind was blown. Hearing Van Halen was the next level! So, I spent my lawn mowing money on that album! Never regretted it EVER!

This is parts of 7 or 8 different songs. Mean Street intro slapping, some of Eruption, some of Cathedral, some of Spanish fly, and basically just techniques all but invented by EVH. He literally changed the world of guitar overnight, one album, 'nuff said.

Fools. The #1 song of Van Halen I love. And I love and know them all. Eddie does so much in that song, it's amazing the fill-in excess music in between he does effortlessly. And...it's my favorite rebellion song as a teen. Why behave in public when you're living on a playground? -priceless!

Eddie wasn't just guitar-wank. He wrote some of the best rock riffs and melodies around. He was generally known for the guitar-wank, but one of his strengths was rhythm playing. That's what made Van Halen songs so amazing; how Eddie would knit together the rhythm, leads, keyboards, and bass (if in fact it was him playing most of the studio bass after VH2, which I'm inclined to believe). It's what makes their songs always interesting. You always catch some new little diddle or phrase that you didn't hear before. You'll be hard pressed to find as good a rhythm guitarist, in any genre, as EVH. Listen to such examples as "Pleasure Dome", "Mine all Mine", "Me Wise Magic", "Dreams", "House of Pain", "Girl gone bad", "Mean Street", "Human's Being" (the extended version), "Hot for teacher", and "Push comes to shove". Among many many others, of course. He wrote a large number of excellent tunes. Oh yeah, the drummer is his brother Alex Van Halen, who is himself a respected drummer. Both of them were classical pianists when they were growing up, before they ever discovered drums, guitars, and rock and roll. But they are both multi-instrumentalists.

You just do it. I was in bands for 30+ years on many stages in front of many sizes and types of crowds in many different venues. You just go with it. You just feed off the audience's energy. It's an unreal experience. I remember seeing people in the crowd singing my own lyrics along with me. And, right then, I knew what it was all about. The feeling is indescribable. It's just... perfect!

ProgPiglet - the technique is called "tapping." Eddie didn't invent it, but he brought it to mainstream and made it a big part of his style and legacy as a guitarist. This is an extended version of Eruption with bits of other songs and some improve. There's another excellent live version of Eruption that's really close to the studio version that used to be on youtube if you can still find it.

“It’s like he’s in his bedroom in front of his brother.”-how true. You were more right than you ever could have known.😇 In fact, Eddie Van Halen was truly in front of his brother, Alex Van Halen, the drummer with the “little kit” as you mentioned.😁 Eddie Van Halen and his brother spent their whole lives playing with each other in their bedroom. Eddie was actually shy and a slight recluse. To him that auditorium was as comfortable as his bedroom as long as his big brother, Alex, was backing him up on drums and in brotherhood. R.I.P. Eddie Van Halen❤️😇🎸

Eddie Van Halen, Guitars. Alex Van Halen Percussion. Michael Anthony Bass guitar. David Lee Roth, Vocals. The first Van Halen record has a track , titled Eruption. It is about 2 minutes long. It is Eddie Van Halen doing his signature solo.The "Eruption" solo you heard here is a mash up of his styles used on Van Halen recordings over the first 8 years of the bands life. From '78 to '85. This recording was from 1986. The tapping on the fretboard is called the " two hand tap" style of picking. He didn't invent the style, but he certainly perfected it and took it to another level!
@khanhphan4380
@khanhphan4380 6 жыл бұрын
There is improv in this solo, but there are some songs that are incorporated into this solo like Spanish fly, cathedral, intro to mean street, and of course eruption. Eruption is a 1 minute 40 second solo that is split up in this throughout the whole video.

I started out with the first album as a kid and have loved them forever! Eddie is in the top 5 guitarist of all time imo. The drummer is his brother and ironically started out on guitar while Eddie started on drums. They decided to trade and the rest is history! This was just improv to give the rest of the band a breather.

Yes, the studio version of "Eruption" is definitely shorter. There's several solos and riffs combined here. Check out the studio version of "Eruption" from their first album "Van Halen," then "Cathedral" from their album "Diver Down," and then the intro to "Mean Streets" from their album "Fair Warning." Plus, he did a lot of "improv" here too.

Veteran's Memorial Coliseum in New Haven Ct. where this concert took place and was recorded held a little under 12, 000 asses. When you are talking about the missing notes, he did play with a much less processed tone than a lot of technical guitarists today. He wasn't missing notes to my ears, but the guitar tone is much more unforgiving, but also allows you to play softer and louder and you can actually hear the difference instead of very processed tone where the notes come about on the same volume whether you play harder or softer. There are for sure more technical guitarist there now, but Eddie was one of the innovator for example he made the right hand tapping technique popular. Also the band isn't really instrumental wankery. Quite opposite I consider more of a party rock :). Eddie really has lots of good riffs and is a great rhythm guitar player.

The song on the album is much shorter. If you want to check out other Van Halen, you should check the early stuff with David Lee Roth. “Unchained” “Hot for Teacher” or almost anything else up to 1985. You should also check out 2 other guitar gods: David Gilmour of Pink Floyd (anything off Live Pompeii 1972 is great) or Buckethead “Soothsayer” Live.

The studio version of 'Eruption' is a minute 42. This solo includes that composition, plus parts of some other songs - 'Cathedral,' for example. . . the bit that you said sounded underwater and psychedelic. . . the slap part is from the intro to 'Mean Street.' The drummer is the guitar player's big brother. The older stuff, the first 6 albums - known as the Sacred Six - are reminiscent of the Beach Boys with their melodies. . . driven by a screaming guitar. Listen to the first album, in order, just push play. You'll be a different person by the time it's over.

I have seen all of these reactions to this same Solo Section... You have the most spot-on analysis I've seen. I have also seen VH with Dave up front eleven times in 36 years. I challenge you to react to Eddie Van Halen guitar solo Hollywood Bowl 2015, Ed is now sober, older, and way better now. Eddie Van Halen is considered to be in the Top 5 if not the greatest electric guitarists ever. That shit you just listened to was not improvised... No, it was invented by Mr. Van Halen. He is a genius, a virtuoso, a master composer, and the greatest guitar innovator ever. Eddie has been playing that solo for the better part of 40 years. He changes it up from tour to tour, but the framework stays the same. In February of 1978, myself, and a lot of my fellow fans in these comments heard Edward Van Halen, and his band Van Halen for the first time. Let me tell you, dude; EVERYTHING changed in the world of the electric guitar. Established guitar gods had no idea how he created those songs/sounds with just a guitar, a couple of basic effects, and a Marshal Stack. Minds were blown that day. Rock stars pondered quitting the guitar because the bar had been raised so high. I would also suggest that you React to a song from that first album called Ain't Talking Bout Love. One last thing... In 1978 Rock and Roll was dying. Disco and Punk were chewing up radio time and the Rock section at the record store was getting smaller every month. The first two Van Halen albums have been recognized as the saviors of Hard Rock. By mid-1978 labels were scrambling to find their own Van Halen band, their own David Lee Roth frontman, and their own Edward Van Halen freak of nature guitarist. The eighties was the greatest generation of real guitar shredders ever!

the album version is much shorter, and iconic. It's just a solo and you should give it a listen, it's very cohesive. Also a lot of what he's doing isn't overly difficult, it's just that nobody showed it to the public eye on such a large scale before him. He was a rock guitar god to a lot of kids growing up in the 80's. Listen to the entire album eruption is from. Lot's of radio hits, diversity, and quality song writing. Eddie is the guy that introduced the modern rock guitar sound to the world, and he had a profound affect on everyone who came after him. While he wasn't the first guitarist to do tapping on the fret board, he was the one that took it mainstream. He is second only to Hendrix in his impact on guitar players If you think Eddie is mindblowing, you should really check out Steve Vai. What Eddie does on the guitar is incredible, but Vai takes it to a whole new level and does stuff that will make your jaw drop. But watch him live as that is half the Steve Vai experience. Sad how this younger generation doesn't even recognize or understand what it means to be dedicated to learning to play a real instrument without a computer or internet of any kind, to put in the hours, days and years it takes to play at this level, He says he'd heard others, and he mentioned at least two of the greats SRV and Hendrix,of which King Edward highly respected, But the young gentleman doesn't seem to realize if it wasn't for VanHalen the entire face of Rock n Roll and popular music would sound totally different today, Eddie VanHalen single handedly killed disco with a little diddy called Eruption.

Listen to Eddie play live from the 2015 tour. He killed it and makes this look weak. Eddie is now playing like he is having fun again and doing it sober

I love Van Halen. Eddie IS a guitar God... however, there is a big change in his guitar style from before Eruption to then. Songs like The Cradle Will Rock and Ain't Talking About Love and so on. From what I understand, the heavy repeated string tapping was picked up from a guitarist named (can't recall full name) Pontes or something like that. Mad 1000% respects to Eddie. Not criticizing at all. Just stating Van Halen didn't just pop on the scene with Eruption-style riffs and wails. It's was all part of the Eddie Van Halen evolution.

Listen to the original Eruption off of Van Halen’s debut album. When this hit the sound waves back in 1978 nobody ever heard anything like it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qXqaiZyAnNljrLs
