This song is an example of why the David Lee Roth era Van Halen was the only one I liked. His vocals and personality add as much to the appeal of the music as EVH's guitar work. Of course, some people just don't like Roth, but I have no problem with him. Their later music was more polished but in a generic rock band way.

Singer David Lee Roth actually plays the acoustic guitar on this song. In concert, Dave had a guitar shaped like a creamsicle on a stick, with Davesickle written on the guitar. Plenty of videos from the 1980s of Dave playing the guitar in concert.

Original VH singer David Lee Roth was a character... he loved to do cover songs. Even after leaving VH, he recorded covers of Beach Boys' "California girls" ... also songs like 'Ladies night in Buffalo' ... 'Just a giggolo'... Eddie Van Halen was apparently not happy when half of Van Halen's 'Diver down' album in 1982 were covers.

Around the time of Diver Down, Eddie was moving more towards keyboards. DLR and Ted Templeton wanted to repeat what they knew worked, Eddie’s guitar. By the time they recorded 1984 they relented and let Eddie do his keyboard stuff too. Ted Templeton has said in hindsight he did not see it but Eddie was right.

Probably my favourite guitar solo. When Eddie arrived people thought it must be machines and effects. He used less effects than anyone. I can just picture Eddie gritting his teeth having to listen to it every show.

Van Halen in the '70's and 80's were just pure and unmatchable unadulterated California fun in the sun pyrotechnics. They didn't really skip too many beats when Sammy Hagar took over for Dave and Dave didn't really dishonor himself too badly when he went solo. It was the Eighties, after all. He may not have been a "man of the night" in this song, but on David Lee Roth's EP "Crazy from the Heat" he does "Just a Gigalo" (a cover of an old standard from the 1920s ... funny, i was going to just type "from the '20s" but now we have to be more specific ... its weird livin' in the future). You should check out David Lee Roth's solo work after Van Halen because it was campy and obscure covers (like this one, which is an old blues song from the '60s) that Dave always wanted to do that really drove the conflict between him and Eddie and ultimately got him kicked out of the band, so he goes all out with this type of song (rumor is Eddie absolutely hated Icecream Man)

You guys are awesome, love your takes. This is song is a traditional blues song (why you feel it's from the 50's 60's) supercharged and given high energy treatment by the Mighty Van Halen. The solo has a bunch of blues guitar standards that are just taken to another level by Eddie along with some of his own licks. Yes, you need to listen to the whole first album and then realize what was around in 1978 to see how Van Halen changed rock.

Eddie's solo smokes right out of the starting gate. One of his best.

I always thought it had to be a dare of some kind... David Lee Roth could make anything sound dirty... and this, on paper, is squeaky clean... but just listen... I'm with Lex. He was selling what he's got to satisfy every taste.

So I really liked your reactions to this song. So I'm going to make a suggestion here. David Lee Roth went on to have a solo carrier after Van Halen. On his first album he had a similar song to Ice Cream Man called, Just a Gigolo. So when you're thinking where you should go next, you could circle back to this one. Just a thought. 🤔🤔🤔

Those involuntary smiles on your faces - that was the magic of Van Halen. How many artists from any genre make a person smile, or even laugh. Van Halen did.

This is such an underrated VH song, DLR lyrics and voice are incredible and the usual EVH kick ass guitar makes this such a unique and classic tune. I remember seeing this live in 1981 as VH opened up for The Rolling Stones and DLR sitting on a stool playing this and pounding a bottle of JD. ‘What a show! They killed it that day as they usually do. Stones weren’t bad either, lol !

Perfectly defines the line between the Roth era and the Hagar era. They went from "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love" to "Love Comes Walking In" and "Why Can't This Be Love". BLECH.

According to Nancy Wilson guitarist for heart, she befriended Eddie and she learned that Eddie had never played acoustic guitar so she gave him one. He stayed up writing a song on the acoustic and called Nancy just to see what she thought.
