I found this video in my VH vault and decided to post it. I know when this song was recorded it was a difficult time in the Van Halen camp but, despite this the guitar sounds amazing. I had the opportunity to see VH on this tour (Best of Both Worlds). Again, despite the friction between Eddie and Sammy, the concert was awesome. I will always be a Van Halen fan, RIP Eddie.

I met Eddie in 1991 at an AA meeting at Saint Joe’s Medical Center in Burbank. I had just moved there from Palm Springs into a sober living house. After the meeting his sponsor took me up to the third-floor and he walked right up to me and said welcome to Los Angeles Steve. I gave him a book when he received his NA 30 day chip. He gave me a huge hug. And look at me and said Steve right ? Yeahhhhh !!! I saw him a couple times at the musician meeting and we went out into the back patio area and smoked a cigarette just me and him. Talked about recovery. Everybody was looking at us. It sounds weird but I think it was my 15 minutes. I loved that man. Not only as a musician, but is a human being. I didn’t see him after that. But the memory was burned into my conscience. I kept an eye on him through the media. I saw him in 2015 at the Concord Pavilion. I managed to squeeze really close up to the front and I was watching him on stage sober with Wolfie. It brought a tear to my eye knowing that he was okay now. I was hoping he would recognize me. 24 yrs later. No Way. Anyway I was so brokenhearted to hear that he was suffering. And when he passed we definitely lost one of God‘s children. I hope one day I’ll see him again. RIP MY FRIEND !!! STEVE. I miss you man !!

This is a sad video of a man who is not only in alot of pain, but deep into his addictions. So far gone its a miracle he came back and stayed with us until 2020. I would say that everyone he hurt during this time should consider the fact that it wasn't Edward saying those things it was the drugs and alcohol. Still it can be hard to forgive some of the horrible shit addicts do. I was disgusted with Ed in 2004 for the rat shit performance he did when I saw him, I know an addict when I see one. Now that I'm older I have more compassion. He was going thru hell and wasn't the kind of person who asked for help. Reat in peace Ed. Thanks for writingcthe music of my life.

@@MrOccyc Not to mention he and his brother basically forfeited the remainder of their careers artistically after firing Hagar. If anyone had told me at that point they would only do two more studio records (subpar records at that) over the next 25 years I would have certainly labeled them crazy, but that's exactly what happened and to me that will always be the tragic legacy of that band......that all those additionally creative years were flushed away by addiction, apathy and incredibly bad decision making. Having Wolfie play bass on that first reunion tour with Roth instead of Michael Anthony is one that I'll never get over. That totally killed what should have been a monumental occasion.

The book RED is a smear campaign against the Halen Bros . He never mentioned how much Konami paid him for using his Can't Drive 55 song for the Ridge Racer Type 4 videogame TV commercial YET he bitches about the Halen Bros selling songs for TV commercials . And it's not Ray Daniels fault for Sammy leaving the band . Sam is to blame for trying to boss Eddie around and whatever he said to piss Eddie off . And Sammy became a rat and a snitch for what he put in his book about Ed's drug abuse . You don't rat on your friends for any reason YET he did . I don't care how true or false his complaints about Ed are , it's still a private thing . If he pulled the same crap on you you should feel the same way .

It actually started after 1984, they slowly were cutting Mike's pay and royalties. He was lucky to be part of the group after 1984. @@ROOKTABULA Yeah, one of the opening acts from the last VH tour was discussing how the (shady) business of music works. He said the VH band were very accommodating to him, they called the record company to help his band get better travel deals and sleeping arrangements but to no avail. He also said VH raked in over $250k a night in merchandise at concert venues. Not bad. So, I'm sure Michael Anthony got something, some percentage from that outside of his flat rate pay scale. I just can't see them being that cold. Bon Jovi did the same thing as KISS, his band mates are 'employees' but recall Richie Sambora say he made $2 million a month while in tour with JBJ. He said this when he quit the band, not over money but artistic differences. Nevertheless, pretty good pay.

It was hard reading Sammy's book about all this stuff. Eddie was falling apart. As Sammy said, "he let the demons in" and he watched them destroy him. Eddie was dealing with guilt, resentment, anger and pain. His marriage was gone, his band was gone and he was to blame for most of it. Evil always wants to cast you as the 'good guy', to BLAME everyone, to lash out and destroy everyone and everything around you. It was great seeing how Eddie came full circle at the end, though. His last live show at the Hollywood Bowl, he looked and sounded amazing.

I agree with you’re entire statement but Sammy made a huge mistake writing that book. He even admitted after Eddie died he regrets doing that. I think that book is why Alex Van Halen still won’t communicate with Sam to this day. It was unnecessary to air dirty laundry like that. It was obvious to everyone that Eddie was drinking way too much but Sam didn’t have to announce to the world about Eddie hiding cocaine in the wall of the 5150 bathroom plus all the other stuff. Roth and Ed insulted each other over the years but never to that extent. Ed definitely did redeem himself from 2008 on for sure. His playing on the 2015 tour was outstanding and he was good ol’ smiling Ed again.

@@jeremysenecal5340 Agree about Sammy. I think Sammy is a bit insecure, a bit jaded about how it all ended, there was ill will and pain on all sides, acrimony and stubbornness caused everyone to make their case in a very public way. Roth and Sammy as the polar opposites of each other but that isn't to say that Roth is "bad" and Sammy is "good". I've read Van Halen Rising and other books about the band, there were deep rooted issues everywhere from the start. It was a hard pill for Eddie to swallow when he had to come and ask Sammy to do a "reunion" tour after his new singer was a disaster. That pride pill caused him to act out, lash out and become someone and something he isn't. Perhaps its fitting that he adopted the symbol of a dragon around that time, a reflection of the devils had come to destroy him...and almost did.

@@Calif5150 yeah it definitely is hard to watch some of those performances and Sammy was right about the tour being a disaster. A few of those shows Eddie was crying and overcome with emotion. I still watch some of those shows on KZbin just out of curiosity and there are a couple shows where he was on but not many. Sammy has said they were worried that Ed might die on tour. The fact that he got well and improved every tour right up to the end makes me feel a lot better. It's almost like he knew that last show at the Hollywood bowl was going to be his last ever because he was on fire. I'm so glad he didn't finish his career playing like he did in 2004.

I definitely remember after Ed finished his solo he looked to the crowd and shrugged and mouthed "I did the best I could" Something I will never forget. As much as I love VH I swore I would never see them in concert again. Ed was so trashed and you can definitely see it in this video as well. Alcoholism is a mother fucker and he looks like shit here. Wow when i think about some people have like sports card and memorabilia, rare coin collections or guitar collections but a collection of van halen shows that were recorded before they even became rock stars but for yhe ones who thought it important to record the band just brilliant and lucky for mike that he knew to collect and put together all these recordings who knew that someday it would open the door for him to get to meet Ed that way. This is an awesome story its hard to believe that Ed and Alex never thought to record their shows themselves but then again who knew those tapes and bootlegs are gold 🥇

Never gets old, finding VH stuff I've not heard before. Sammy added so much to the music. It would have been great if they had done a duet performance along the way. David Lee and Sammy jamming their pipes together. That would have been awesome. Both versions of this band will go down in history. RIP Eddie - GOAT

That’s the Mini Cooper, Carl Browne mentions in his EVH remembrance video ( @guitarlessons365 ). Such a sad time, and Sam honestly looks a little uncomfortable. No sign of MA, but as mentioned, EVH had a long standing animosity toward him. Mike not being into friction, likely went along with whatever EVH wanted (MA was and is just a chill personality) and Ed needed some friction to feed the creative genius he was. I remember this tour, it was the worst concert I’ve ever seen.

Yes, no sign of Mikey here. He was so desperate to play with the guys he took a pay cut on the tour (which is fucking insulting seeing as he's an original member) and Eddie and Alex got him to sign over his portion of the right to the VH name. Sammy should have told them to shove it because Mike deserves respect for his ability as a musician and for being a decent human being, but being so nice he probably told Sammy to let it go. I love their musician but I don't feel much love towards the brothers for that kind of behaviour.
