To come up with a lyric for it, he remembered seeing a television news report the night before about a man who was threatening to commit suicide by jumping off of a high building. Roth thought that one of the onlookers of such a scene would probably shout "go ahead and jump". Roth bounced this suggestion off Hostler who agreed it was good. Instead of being about a threatened suicide, the words were written as an invitation to love.

It's amazing how many people think this song has anything to do with physically jumping at all. I mean, I suppose it could if you really wanted it to. But it's about taking chances, not living in fear. Being willing to try anything. Whether it's romance, your career, your car, school, whatever. Don't waste time pacing back and forth worrying if you're gonna land or not. Just go ahead and jump.
@cynthiahusband1064 жыл бұрын
To: Mason Lawlor From:Cynthia husband I’m one of the uninformed people (have been in love with this song since it came out) that thought “jump” has got to mean jump , because once in awhile you get the high from just being alive and lovin’ life BUT that’s once in awhile , but I get what your saying it’s all the things you mention in your comment and it’s so true, take a chance but you know what back then , when the song came out , the world had its troubles yeah but NOT like today , you take a deep breath and it’s a live and death situation, the world in 2020has been turned upside down, but I do like your take on what Jump really conveys the video gives a whole different vibe and I solely went by that , what a great band probably one of the best they were “lightening in a bottle “Eddie David Alex and Mike this group was unusual in that all 4 guys , it worked , their performances were awesome, they come and go, but Eddie Van Halen will be around for years and years to come , getting right down to it cause of Eddie ,who was a maestro on that guitar, to hands on the neck of the guitar , who else does that , he was gifted in so many ways starting with his sheer presence on the stage , he may be gone BUT he’ll never be forgotten, legends don’t die, they live on.
