You have to realize the context of Van Halen's early music. Like Eruption. Nobody had played like that before. All the guitarists you named that you like were inspired by him. And Eddie played the solo on Beat It.

Actually one (small) part of Eruption is lifted from Steve Hackett's tapping in 1975. I've never held that against him.

The harder dirtier sound was David Lee Roth's idea. He wanted VH to go in the heavy direction but Eddie didn't like the idea. That's why the next album ( Diver Down) was completely different especially when Eddie added keyboards to the sound. David hated the keyboards and the conflicts caused Dave to leave the band. I agree with David Lee Roth's direction. I enjoyed their music from 1978 - 1981. I no longer listened to VH from Diver Down to their last album. I liked Sammy Hagar when he was in Montrose but didn't like him with VH. I saw VH at the Madison Square Garden in NYC back in 1981 and it was a fantastic concert full of energy.

That was a lot of fun, seeing Alexia react to Van Halen for the first time. They were such a great band and that's sometimes missed I think in the whole scheme of things. You said it Nick, they were such a tight unit, especially Alex and Michael's rhythm section, and enabled Eddie and Dave to fire in all directions. That first album created such a stir all around the world! I also love Sammy Hagar's time with VH as well, but I was a fan of his from way back with Montrose. Now there's another great debut album. Thanks guys!

Nick, Van Halen's classic and best album, their debut, was released in 1978. The criminally underrated second album came out in 1979. A lot of their best music, which is with David Lee Roth on vocals, came out in the late 1970s. Michael Anthony was a great bassist and backing vocalist with Eddie while Alex Van Halen is a superb drummer. Another great song off the fair Warning album is Mean Street, perhaps VH's grittiest and most socially conscious song. Try the very cheeky and fun Beautiful Girls from Van Halen 2. Another favourite of mine that you don't hear on the radio much is the slyly sexy, bluesy Ice Cream Man. P.S. I believe that cheeky little talk by Roth near the end of the song is him talking to producer Ted Templman who was in the recording booth.

Such an incredibly fun band. They were a party band with Diamond Dave and then grew up a bit when Sammy took over, although one of Dave's songs on their greatest hits when Sammy was still their frontman, "Me Wise Magic" is a great track and has that more grown-up feel to it. Great reaction.

I saw Van Halen at their peak here in Porto Alegre, Brazil in 1983. I was 16 years old and it was a crazy experience! I was half deaf and completely hoarse for two days! I jumped like I never jumped before or since. This song they played. It was extraordinary.

It wasn't long after this that Eddie Van Halen got Holdsworth signed to his label, Warner Brothers, because Holdsworth was so broke he was selling equipment to pay the rent. The label wanted Holdsworth to go in a more commercial direction than Allan would agree to, and "Road Games" was the only result of that contract. See Dweezil Zappa's live version of "Eruption", ( "Dweezil Zappa Plays Zappa | Eddie Van Halen speech | Eruption | Raleigh 2012 - KZbin " ), where he tells the story of Frank having Eddie come over to the house to give 12 yr. old Dweezil guitar lessons - and the time Dweezil took Eddie to school for a show and tell event. (This performance and story was before Van Halen had died.)

Van Halen fans are gonna love this. ❤️❤️ When Van Halen first came out, I was playing in a lot of different bands, and all the guitar players went nuts. Me personally as a bass player I was more interested in fusion, jazz and progressive rock aka Steely Dan. So my interest never really was directed towards this music as player. Glad to see you react to it. I know that they’ll be lots of happy campers. Good intro song nice reaction Alexia. 👍👍

Hi. Great reaction 😊 If you listen to a running theme through all or most of VH songs ,especially the DLR era...its swing/big band. One of VH's secret weapon was theyre ability to swing. Perfect example is I'm The One off of VH 1. Its a flawless one take performance, no punching in, from start to finish. A lot of people credit the DNA of theyre Dad, Jan Van Halen, a big band clarinetist and sax player. I would agree. This is why theyve stood the test of time (great song writing aside). As far as Eddie, his rythym playing is sometimes over shadowed because he was such a force with lead guitar. But maan, no one touches him when it comes to his slinky, swing feel. Maybe Billy Gibbons, but at a much slower tempo. You mentioned the Holdsworth/ VH performance,it brought a smile to my face, I was there at the G.I.T performance. A wonderful memory. 😊 Cheers

Nick, looks like Lex really enjoyed that so looks like you need to do some more Van Halen. Should've hit Mean Street of that same album. In the late 70's I seen to two bands blow Black Sabbath off the stage . The first time it was Ted Nugent. The second time was Van Halen. Seen Van Halen like three more times. The second time might of been the loudest concert I ever heard. I was used to my ears ringing a day after a show. That Van Halen show, they rang for two days. Eddie was always a great guitarist & he was the band. Definitely miss his playing.

OK...quick thing about Van Halen that it seems like you do not know about...the Instrumentals. Eddie took one track per album to just get completely Prog and do things that were really experimental...on Fair Warning, the track is Sunday Afternoon in the Park...and it is mind blowing stuff. On the first album, the track to listen to is Eruption, and they follow on each album there is Spanish Fly, Loss of Control, Sunday Afternoon in the Park, and then on the Diver Down album there are two amazing short segments that you definitely need to listen to...Cathedral and Little Guitars Intro. For me as a kid waiting to get each new Van Halen album as it came out, I really wanted to hear what Eddie was gonna do for an instrumental. 👍💯

I agree, "Sunday Afternoon in the Park/One Foot Out the Door" was an odd one and too short (I'm sure it was a last minute addition since it was soo short and WEIRD), and "House of Pain" from 1984 was _almost_ Fusion, but in that Eddie Van Halen filter, and THAT came out of it :p.

Hi guys, it's funny Nick, you were into Steve Vai and not so much Van Halen ... because Steve was in The David Lee Roth Band after he left Van Halen as lead vocalist & frontman performer. There are some brilliant music videos of Steve in that band. Great fun to watch and great music too....Checkout music video > "Yankee Rose" .. You will love it !!! It's actually the first time I ever saw Steve Vai. Lee Roth has some great moves live on stage with mid air splits .... and sliding down to do the splits and martial art kicks. He was pretty handy with those moves and dominated the stage. He was a performer and not just a vocalist. Great sense of humour too. He really worked those cameras knowing exactly where they were. Great reaction. Thankyou. Byeee Jim X

IMO, Eddie Van Halen probably influenced more guitarists (and prompted new guitarists to pick the instrument up) than anyone before or since, including Hendrix, Page, Clapton. Perhaps because guitars were more accessible by the time he arrived on the scene, but also because he was just such an innovator and played like nobody had before him.

Written by Van Halen. Produced by Ted Templeman. This is the only Van Halen song with the voice of producer Ted Templeman. "Come on, Dave, give me a break." Funny 😆 No. Steve Lukather 9f Toto played all guitar parts on Billie Jean. He only played rhythm guitar in Beat It. Late Eddie van Halen, RIP, played the guitar solo in the late Michael Jackson song Beat It. Eddie van Halen was married to Valerie Bertinilli, who was in the TV 📺 comedy One Day at a Time. Co-star MacKenzie Phillips is the daughter of singer Michelle Phillips and older sister of Wilson Phillips singer Chynna Phillips, who is a sister-in-law of actor Stephen Baldwin, who is the father of Hailey, who is married to Justin Bieber. Great reaction to an ultimate 'party' tune!! This song, for me, is the very definition of 'crunchy' guitar! I could hear that intro on repeat for a long time (much like Ain't Talkin' Bout Love - Eddie has such a way of opening a song!!) Van Halen was a party band (particularly with David Lee Roth at the helm) - they personified the 'sex, drugs, rock n roll' atmosphere, and so many of us were willing & able to be along for the ride!! RIP Eddie! For another great intro track (and song altogether), but highlighting Eddie's wizardry on the keys/synth, try I'll Wait. It's a darker track, but OH SO GOOD!! Cheers.

Also, Van Halen is very much the brothers, Edward and Alex. If you've ever seen a drummer play with a broken wrist - that's Alex van Halen. They were extremely loyal/supportive.

Just a point of clarification: Saying "Van Halen" by itself usually refers to the name of the band. If you were to refer to the guitarist or drummer specifically (who happen to be brothers) you would say Eddie Van Halen or Alex Van Halen

...start with "Van Halen" and devour it..".then VanHalen II"...listen to it forwards and back...know it all....then go to "Women and Children First"...the next evolution...awesome album, some really innovative stuff (Cradle...)..then "Fair Warning"... A dark time for EVH, and the music reflected it, but some really great tunes on this album..probably my favorite..... Then "Diver Down" ! an excellent cover of "Pretty Woman"..and one of my all time faves. "Hang em High",,, then "1984"... the pinnacle, The end of an era... a combination of men of which the likes we have never seen before...,nor ever will we again

Steve Vai did play on the first two David Lee Roth albums, in case you missed that point.

Eddie redefined what it meant to be a guitar player. So many bands followed his lead. He really broke down a lot of doors. A true innovator. Alex and Michael were also superb. But David was the clown prince, wordsmith and ringmaster. And without him things would have been very different.

Most would agree... Sammy Hagar is a great singer. David Lee Roth is an amazing frontman. Regarding Eddie's solos...one ever seems to realize that he makes the perfect solo for each song. Kickass songs have a kickass solo ("I'm the One") and a more subdued song gets a subdued solo ("Runnin' With the Devil")
