Thank you for your service. I used to be a California Park Aide on Angel Island, back in the '70's, and the things I saw and had to deal with were totally inconsiderate of others. People can be real trashy and selfish when it comes to preserving a clean area for others to enjoy. They simply don't care about anything other than themselves.

I totally agree with the whole video. Great job! I always pick up the camp. The military taught me that. So we are undetected. I have actually told people to pick up the trash and they get mad like I am injustice. It is crazy. People just dont realize the destruction they can do.

I know this is old but I definitely learned. Ive been camping for years. I even carry a bin labeled "other peoples garbage" - but I didnt realize the rule about depth of cat holes nor the organic material - especially in the desert. Both totally make sense once its pointed out. Somehow I have never encountered these bits of information. Thank you

Thank u for putting this video out there Bob! The only music I want to hear is the music that nature sings. The last x I camped at a camp site, the fire ring was full of trash... just as u said. I get enough noise, see enough trash in towns and cities, therefore when I go into nature,I want to be free of all that and breathe. The land needs to be pristine for all eyes to see, it’s up to each and every one of us to keep her beautiful. Honestly, how hard can it be, no one has a problem with taking it in, why is there a problem on taking it out when it’s a lot less. Thank u

I was just one of those. Just learned a few new things! I was a bit shocked when he said though that in the desert you can do what you want. I think even compared it to a parking lot. That is NOT the case. You should treat the desert like ANY OTHER AREA. The desert has a lot of eco systems that can be damaged by turning it into a desert. People already just dump there trash out there, doesn’t make sense to make it worse. Great video otherwise.

Thanks Bob for this presentation. It is a good reminder to follow the rules some of us learned in the Boy Scouts. I try to leave each camp I use cleaner then when I got there. I also carry a litter scoop I used for my cats litter box. When the fire pit is cold, one can easily do a quick scoop through the ashes and clean out any rubbish left by the previous camper and can do a quick scoop before leaving after extinguishing my last campfire.

you forgot hammocks, some places hammocks are forbidden, and where hammocks are allowed the forest rangers require hammocks with tree straps because ropes will cut in to the bark on the trees, hammock straps wont harm trees, i made my tree straps from old seat belts i got out of a junked car which exceed the the specifications of normal tree straps, (always use hammock straps when hanging a hammock to a tree) kudos for the rules, (especially the Golden Rule which transcends all cultures & all religions) thanks for the pep-talk, you are like a brother to me

I love going back and watching your older videos! I’m camping right now. Every day I walk around and pick up bandaids, zip ties, metal beer bottle caps (they injure tender pet feet and stick into my shoes!), broken glass, bread ties, cigarette butts, candy wrappers, GUM (don’t get me started!), and so many other things! Both my little terriers had explosive diarrhea two nights ago, and I was outside with them in the rain til 4:00 a.m. I fed them nothing different, so there’s no doubt in my mind that they ate something left by a previous camper. Chicken bones are the scariest thing I’ve found. Well, those and pills and a used syringe, needle intact! That I had to take to a police officer so he could find a sharps container for correct disposal. Sorry for the book. Thank you fir all you do, Bob! You give such common sense, sage advice!❤TN Nana

I know this was 4 years ago but like I said I'm just now thinking about being a nomad. I only counted five command much but quite a few amendments you might say but I wrote them all down including the so-called amendments and that's not what they are but that's how I labeled them. I've been a Backpacker most of my life that I can think of Italy since I was 12 years old I'm now 72 and I know exactly what you mean about the micro trash and the cigarette butts. I used to work at a condo at the beach and first thing in the morning that's what I did was pick up cigarette butts. At the time I smoke but I never leave cigarette butts around since then. If I wasn't able to put them in a fire ring with a fire going then they went in my pocket. So thank you so much for all these rules and regulations and I got the website to go to for all of them. My dogs remain on leash. Always ware harness before I leave my home they go on dogs before the door is open. Leashes are hanging by the door. Harness are not removed until safely back home 🏡 I haven’t lost a dog after implementing this habit

A few years back, I stopped at a campsite for a one night stay. There were bags of poop left around the trunk of a tree. There was also trash all over the place. It was getting a bit too late to find someplace else to camp, so I stayed there that night. The next morning, before I left, I picked up most of the trash, but I wanted nothing to do with those poop bags.

In criminal justice they teach you about Broken Window Theory. Basically stating that a building that has one broken window that does not get repaired shows lawless types nobody cares what happens to that structure. When more damage is caused and nothing gets repaired it serves as an OKAY signal to come in and do worse. Because if the owners, managers, or community at large don't care about the appearance of their surroundings and the folk who broke the law then more lawlessness is being invited. With enough apathy the whole community is threatened which can spread to other communities. And ultimately resulting in the downward spiral or creation of slums and dangerous neighborhoods. This in turn requires more expenditure of resources (man power, monies, equipment, and so forth of law enforcement, fire, medical, etc) to fix the problem caused by a single broken window. This applies to retail, camp sites, schools, entertainment venues, all of society.

We took a car hood off a state forest site a few months ago. Someone spent the effort to take the thing up the mountain and then decided to leave it there. This is a good video and should be required to watch before anyone camps, dispersed or not. Even at a managed campground, it would still be wrong to leave a lot of trash behind.

Thanks Bob! Putting this information out there is a GREAT idea! Some people may know some, most or even all the "commandments" while others may not. Your putting it out here like this will help those who weren't aware of some of the nuances of the rules, like me. Fortunately or unfortunately, I've not been in the position to break them and after hearing you talk so effectively about the "commandments", they will be something I'll be much more cognizant of when I do finally make the move. Hope to see more education along those lines so I and others are less likely to make the mistakes others do due to ignorance and/or malice.

Awesome! I really liked the organic waste rule : I throw that stuff on the ground all the time, and now I know that's wrong. I was also camphost and 2 things you forgot : 1. Metal and plastic Bottle caps! Beer, soda, etc. ; 2. Unburnt debris in fire pits. Glass, metal, plastic. And you might get in to this later but : DON'T LEAVE LIVE EMBERS! As camphost you have no idea how many I had to douse out with water and dirt after the campers had already completely left... So dangerous! Sometimes embers hidden under the ashes.

Or another way of saying this: is to realise life is being granted to us, not taking life for granted. That true re-spect means looking again before we tread on and destroy something that needed our protection. Hi there Bob, I'm a fairly new RV'er looking for advice and tips. Your videos are so valuable. I'm learning so much and finding I've already learned so much in my few months of RV living. Right now I'm in Oregon at the coast - it's very wet here. I should have left for the south a couple months ago 'cos now it's all snowy and icy on the roads. But as soon as I can I'm getting back on the road - problem is I don't know when that is and depending on time of year where to go - lots of variables. I'd have loved to attending the RTR! I didn't know about it until too late to get there. Maybe next year - I'm sure I'd learn so much. Right now I'm trying to figure out my summer schedule.

Thanks for this video Bob. Unfortunately, some people lack those qualities you're talking about. They have no moral compass, and very little, if any, common sense. If that wasn't the case, you wouldn't have had to make a video about it. The only solution I can think of is to hold people accountable they way they do in hotels and motels. Get their license plate number/driver's license number. That way at least they can be identified. It's too bad it's needed, but otherwise it will never get any better.

Oh man the stories i could tell after camphosting. I got called out on my 'day off' to go clean mount trash more. It was a mound of trash that was so big i couldnt fit it in a full size pickup. Whats bad is these same people got warned by the fire Marshal just before for other things. It was weird, they even separated the trash neatly. Then left it all for animals to scatter.

You got our attention in discussing "10 commandments" of campin' on disbursed lands, by the visual, lookin' like Moses. Your definitions, ie micro-trash was easily understandable. And yes every site I've been on has it, But it IS still trash. Small, tiny, miniscule, but because of it being so tiny (& unsightly) it's all the harder to pick up.

I still find those aluminum peel tops from beer cans from the 1970's on occasion. I have a friend who's dad designed the current pop top you see on aluminum beer and soda cans where it stays with the rest of the can. He made a fortune off that. They had a lake in the backyard with an island in Illinois. We use to take a canoe out to the little island when we were kids. Camp out and enjoy the mosquito's.

Commandment no.5 really infuriates me. I hate going to any park and seeing people dump there garbage everywhere leaving empty beer bottles, fast food bags, water bottles, ect all over the land and the more it piles up, the more it stinks up the place. You brought all this stuff in, is it that hard to take it back with you and dispose of it?! Whenever I go hiking I bring a trash bag with me to clean the trail.

Bob can you talk about being safe in Bear country. If a Bear will break in a car for food what stops them from breaking in a rig too. Do we have to take extra precautions in our rigs to be safe from a Bear breaking in?
