Hi! I just discovered vanlife videos and I figured out why your's are so different from the other vanlifers. Your videos are calm and relaxing. Some vlogs feel like they are always "on" and having to be loud and entertaining. Your videos are peaceful. And you are talented; love the videos and music.

Christian ~ You are to be Honored and Recognized for taking on the challenge of your fats, and especially sharing your experiences about it with everyone! This is something everyone might seriously consider given the laundry list of health benefits that take place. Too many think they will starve? But in Truth we can go for extended periods of time without food (weeks!). Our bodies will enter into "Ketosis" (burning body fat for fuel) and begin "Autophagy" (cleaning out old and damaged cells) as well as the detox you overtly experienced... I personally recently did a two week fast and was surprised the amount of energy that was experienced. Yes! We have been socially conditioned into a dysfunctional relationship with food by our culture. And you are helping to plant seeds in many who could benefit by your shared experiences... Well done! 🙏

Have done several 3 day fasts over the years, and this video has been a reminder to do one soon. The stages one feels as the time passes is fun. At some point exhilaration always comes on, and it feels great physically and mentally. Usually late on the second day and early in the third day. In the end, though, it is always wonderful to eat that first food again.

Good for you on the fast Christian. I have completed a 3 day fast in the past but after listening to you through your fast I think I may give the 5 day a shot. You're doing great! ☺️👍 A good way to do fasting is to make preparations: eat only fruit for a few days, then drink only juices for a few days, and then start fasting. I always do like this. Another good tip: when you feel bad - take a small piece of Himalayan crystal salt in your mouth - this will remove the symptoms of detoxification.

I disagree with this way of fasting preparation. The fruit sugars and juices will only make your fasting regiment more difficult because of carbohydrate withdrawal. High fat and protein on the last meal before you start your fast is the best imho.

Really enjoyed your take on the fasting and your perpective of focusing on minimalism. Especially during the pandemic, it has caused me to shift my perspective on what is important and slow down, really see what is around you, take more pictures of flowers, tell your friends and family you love them, focus on mindfulness and being present. I feel like this is what you were doing here and it is inspiring. Love the scenery as the backdrop of it all!

Proud of you for doing this Christian 👏 5 days is no joke!!! Green tea is sooo good during detox and a fantastic place to start if you need caffeine without the jitters. I did the 10 day cayenne pepper and lemon water cleanse when it was popular back in the day. Not so much for the cleanse but more for something to do with my housemate at the time. The hunger was not an issue at all but what was crazy for me was that I missed the simple act of eating. Chewing the food, smelling the food, and tasting the food.

The headache is due to caffeine withdrawal. I quit coffee for about 6 months, last year. The headache really only lasted 1 day for me. When you fast, you need to consume some salt. Yes they villainize salt but it's an essential nutrient for humans, and if you're not consuming any you'll become depleted. You can add some to your water or you can just put a small pile in your hand and eat it that way. If you don't you're really going to feel like dooky. People new to Keto can get the "Keto Flu" which is actually a lack of salt.
@ChristianSchaffer3 жыл бұрын
First- props for eliminating coffee for so long. I’m hoping to do the same at some point 💪🏻 Second - really good point about the salt. I did drink hot water every night with a teaspoon of salt but I didn’t include that footage since I’m not really sure what best practice is there. After three days, it started to taste like vegetable broth to me which was nice, ha

@@ChristianSchaffer I second the salt! A drop in your sodium level can also cause severe headache, fatigue, and worse symptoms. Suddenly drinking nothing but water (or drinking abnormally large amounts) puts you on the trend to developing hyponatremia (low sodium). Sodium is truly vital 🙂 Love these vanlife videos! Hope you keep sharing!

I fasted for 3 days once and ppl said my alaready big eyes became bigger, my cognitive power magnified, I could hit a tenor G effortlessly, practicing yoga I became flexible enough to place both feet behind my neck; generally, my energy level increased...loss of weight a few lbs. You're not drinking coffee causing headaches surprised me. I quite coffee recently with no ill effects. I notice that your diet is SO similar to mine (ie. veggies and fruits). I do ingest plain yogurt, eggs, fish species, nuts-grains and while honey. The list of jobs I listened to you rhyme off in another video is very comprehensive mostly within the business world. As a nature lover I find the mountainous landscapes you've frequented captivating when minced with freshwater lakes, not so much desert land. I've climbed over 20,000 feet and there nothing quite like it. The shot of you leaping from the shelter is hilarious! One thing that would drive me nuts is too much solitude for I come from a large family of 7. Got to hand it to you, you have the gift of the gab, interesting to listen to AND you eyes are not hard on the eyes lol So far this video is my fave to watch yet I've only viewed a handful thus far. My least favourite since I dislike hearing about crime-mystery is when you felt compelled to share potential dangers that lurk. I grew up as a rich kid (unlike yourself) in a highly protective bubble except when it came to my brothers and me being let loose for any adventure we so chose at 3 different cottages. Your videos will serve as you life and times journal Christian so keep it up TU for NOT using cuss/swear words I hate to hear! Crockett.

When I was way younger (I'm 71) I used to fat 15 days every 6 months and I had my sprots activities at the same time (karate and squash: 3 hours a day). So, don't be afraid with 5 days of this experience it's not a lot. One thing I want you to know from me (and I know we're all different persons) after day 3 or 4 I was no more hungry and I was feeling as strong as ever and every day a little more. This was fantastic to eliminate all toxins and old bad minerals we carry in our blood. FYI I didn't start the first time with 15 days. I started with 3 days and added one more day every 6 months. And this for about 12 or 13 years. But as I said, I was younger and in a very good shape. I never did more than 15 days in a row and... I was only have water and... coffee. I'm french and I love strong coffee. That has never been a problem. Sometimes a little shaky and in those moments, I was having long series of squats and pumps and the shaking was over when I stopped moving hard. I'm only telling this to say to you that you've been very prudent and this is perfect. I just discovered your channel and I love your van ;)

The only caviat with a long 'water only' fast is that a body needs electrolytes like salt, and potassium, without it things can go awry like heart rhythm, rate, and blood pressure issues. I'm surprised you were able to go that long without experiencing any adverse effects, though the light headedness and nausea you mentioned could have been a sign your body needed that chemical balance. Stay safe out there. The desert is beautiful, where is this?

“So I ate all my food I had in the van, didn’t grocery shop……….and drove out into the desert” LOL yeah that’ll definitely help you from eating! My first fast was also 5 days and it was amazing. I think I may have gotten a slight headache 1 day, but overall it was a very positive experience with 12 lbs total weight loss (15 before I started eating again) and I experienced that mental clarity that people talk about and increase in energy from day 2-4. Day 5 I started experiencing a bit of fatigue both mentally and physically but the funny thing is I only got really hungry around day 4 and then it decreased. I never experienced any extreme hunger and thought about extending my fast another day or two but I had to visit my mom and trying to refuse food wouldn’t of gone down well lol. One thing I realized is that for me, I find it a lot easier to just not eat at all vs trying to reduce portions sizes and eating super strict. My subsequent experiences with fasting have not gone as well as my first experience but I’ve learned a lot along the way like including minerals in my water when I’m fasting more than 3 days, staying away from sugar free drinks (which can still spike your insulin and kick you out of ketosis), tips and tricks (staying busy) and triggers (like looking at photos of food lol) and now I can do 3-4 day fasts with ease, feel great pretty much the entire time and still reap the benefits. Everyone’s experience is different, as you said, but I think pretty much anyone will benefit from fasting if its done right.
@ChristianSchaffer2 жыл бұрын
I’m the same - feels easier to not eat at all than to “restrict”. It’s been a year since I did this fast (wow time flies) so I’m thinking I might try again sometime soon. Still not sure I can give up the coffee tho 🥴
@dlee69852 жыл бұрын
@@ChristianSchaffer I don’t give up coffee when I fast either. Most say it’s fine and won’t spike insulin and kick you out of ketosis. Sometimes I add pure stevia (not the stuff available at most grocery stores, which usually has other stuff that can spike your insulin mixed in it). Apparently pure stevia won’t. But it’s hard to give up caffeine. My work requires me to be alert for 10 hour shifts (forklift driver) so I can’t let fatigue or brain fog set in or else it’s unsafe. If you find it doesn’t prevent you from experiencing the benefits of fasting, then don’t delete it imho. Or try weening yourself off it before you start your fast if you really want it to be a true water fast. Anyways, love your videos! Keep lovin life! Oh yeah, and it’s possible your headaches might’ve been partly caused by mineral/electrolyte deficiency that you would normally get when eating normally. Research what minerals/electrolytes are suggested to take while fasting (I can’t remember off hand) and that might solve or help with headaches next time.

So much depends on your usual diet and what your body has become used to. I’m forced to follow a medical diet that would be terrible for most people, but keeps me out of the hospital more than once or twice a year. Fasting could literally kill me, partially because it’s such an extreme from what my body has grown used to over the past 20 years. I had chemo a few years ago and spent three days in the hospital at risk for heart failure from low magnesium, to include an example.

Just a thought to consider: some cultures actually fast once a month for health reasons; others do it as a reminder of the blessings they have and to be considerate of others; while some do it as a practice of self-denial. I have tried occassionally to do these at different times but haven't done so in a long while. Nowadays, I only eat brunch and dinner after realizing how much nutrition I actually need to stay healthy. It's not the same for everyone. It begins by learning what's right for you.

You Rock Christian! I've been enjoying your van videos, but this one was so personal and moving. I really like your philosophical view. And the minimalism of your design has a zen beauty and peace about it. Wishing you the very best!

Im a doctor that has been fasting over many years both water and juice. You are on the right track. your eyes are much brighter and clearer a month after the fast. Tip regarding coffee headaches for your next fast... get caffeine pills and start with caffeine pills instead of your coffee and start with one the first day. half the next and quarter day three and four... maybe drink organic low acid decaf... so start like 5days before fast. great job

I have done multiple 30-day juice fasts but not a water fast. For me, it would be too extreme. I used to drink one cup of mushroom coffee most every morning (coffee with Reishi mushroom extract in it... it's an anti inflammatory... supposed to be good for asthmatics). A few months ago, I did a juice fast and stopped my one little cup of coffee, and just like you, I had caffeine withdrawls. I was really shocked because I never felt like "I had to have my coffee" and would skip days here and there. The headache lasted about 3 days but rather than drinking coffee to alleviate the pain, I took Ibuprofen. I have to be in serious pain to resort to drugs, but once I realized I had a caffeine addiction, there was no way I was drinking coffee. I had to break that dependence! Lol. Watching how much control coffee has over my hubby's life was very motivating. He literally freaks out if he sleeps in because he fears the dreaded headache if he drinks coffee after 8am. 🙄🤪😄 Anyway, I haven't had coffee, or caffeine, since! Thanks for sharing your journey. Love your van! Be safe.

Yup, those lack of coffee headaches are a tough one, but cured with whatelse, coffee. Enjoying your channel. I've done 2 days without food and didn't have an issue but I allowed myself an ample supply of coffee. Didn't plan mine it just happened until I wanted food. Your presence for camera is second to none, excellent speaking voice which is not as much of a given as some believe. Having now enjoyed two of your videos I have to see them all just because you are entertaining. Informative, educational and yes, entertaining. I never thought anyone would do #2 out in the bush if need be, especially a lady of 35 (?). You don't look a day over 30 girl. And there ya go, doing that business in the bush. Rare, and yes a tough character. Good for you. None of my business anyway, just glad to know I'm not the only one going behind trees. By the way, you are not Cris Farley or his characters. Party On!

First of all, well done! Second, that has to be one of the healthiest grocery hauls I’ve seen. Would love to see a What I Eat In A Day on the road type video! That sweet potato veggie bowl sounded so yum, curious to know what other types of recipes you make and how living on the road influences what you eat.

Nicely done :) My wife & I've (both in our mid 60's) experimented (successfully) the last ~8 years with morphing down to an eating window that is generally between 11am and 3pm. We experience more even energy level throughout the days. We've done many week-long fasts over the years and nearly always include our typical one-mid-morning cup of coffee, and maybe a cup of tea later on. What we find is we enjoy experimenting and comparing results. Happy Trails.

So curious if electrolytes or salt in your water would have prevented the headache. Dr. Eric Berg has a lot of great advice on how to fast without getting a headache.
@ChristianSchaffer3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I think so - I did have salt at night after day 2 (teaspoon in cup of hot water), so maybe I should have introduced that sooner

Nice video. Fasting can be great. Personally, I think getting rid of the coffee addiction should be your priority. You have a great diet it seems. The coffee won't kill you, but it seems to be your biggest offender at the moment. Coffee doesn't give you energy. It steals it from your deep reserves. At some point, as you get older, you clearly see the long term impact it causes. Good luck. It's rather impressive you did this. I went 14 days a few years ago!
@ChristianSchaffer3 жыл бұрын
14 days! That’s awesome. Yeah, I honestly had no idea I was so reliant on caffeine. I feel as though it’s ‘normal’ but in reality, it can’t be good for me. It’s definitely a new goal to slowly reduce and hopefully kick the habit 🙏🏻

yeah I usually drink black coffee while intermittent fasting, but I was pretty confident I could go without. I was wrong 😅

That is true. Though another benefit of a fast is resting your gut, and coffee can mess with that. Granted, I certainly enjoy having black coffee whenever I do a multi-day fast!

wise 35 year old woman/girl living in a van is 100x better than what is considered "normal". Having things don't mean much without smarts. Having appreciation and wisdom and a sense of "self" is priceless. Many billions of people breath the air and eat and drink and work but they are not truly alive

You Rock!!! I’ve never made it a whole day on a fast. Once the headache starts, I go for the food. But, I have done restricting fasts where you decide in advance what you can have and what you can’t have. Any fast that you can do, is good for the body.
