I have been fascinated by stealth vandwelling since 2007. I have seen hundreds of van builds looking for ideas to set mine up. Yours is by far the best yet! You have done a remarkably good job! Neatness counts with me because I hate clutter. Clutter and sloppy workmanship stresses me out...lol. Your attention to details does not go unnoticed by me. All I can say is WOW!!! Thanks for sharing your very neat and clever ideas.

Probably the best DIY conversion I've seen to date. Lots of well-thought out ideas, and with solid craftsmanship to boot. That's rare on so many of these videos. The side-door screens are pure genius. I came here looking for ideas for a cargo trailer toyhauler conversion. I'm now a new subscriber. Thanks for posting this.

WOW.... You easily blow away all the other van-related videos - by far - and thank you for the tour! I'm retiring early in a year and a half and just purchased a very low mileage 1994 G20 hi-top conversion van (my 3rd) to tour the country. I couldn't decide whether to keep my electric rear bench seat that converts to a bed or convert to the set up you have with 2 sofas that face each other and converts to a bed. MUCH more usable storage your way! The only thing that would hold me back from this would be the exquisite fabrication of the cushions - who did THAT? Also, That screen idea for the front and back should earn you a nomination for a Nobel Prize. Finally, I'm looking for a cabinet that'll hold a microwave, a single burner, small sink and a small fridge. I'm not good with wood, only mechanical stuff... Do you know of anyone that builds such a cabinet? If I make it it'll come out looking gross instead of the beautifully finished piece you ended up with! Thanks again, and I'll certainly be watching!!! (I subscribed 3 minutes into your video!)
@BackroadsVanner
@BackroadsVanner 9 жыл бұрын
+seanoleary1979 Wow Sean, thank you so much for the AWESOME comments! Congratulations on your upcoming retirement. The bench seats like my configuration definitely give you much more versatility and storage capacity. As far as the cushions go, it's really not too difficult (I'll do a video on this soon).. but you can cut the foam to fit, buy some fabric and take it to a local upholstery shop. Also, thank you for the AWESOME comment about the screens. I don't think they have a van screen category in the Nobel Prize... lol. As for your cabinets, if you get the dimensions of the appliances you want to install, you could get a local carpenter to build you a really nice cabinet on site. Many custom cabinet builders will come to you and measure for you. THANKS FOR SUBSCRIBING!!

You are living my dream! Currently have my eye on a (1) owner GMC extended work van with high top roof and all rack/tool shelves already removed! Also, has all oil change records/complete record of all maintenance performed on the Van!:) It has the very reliable 4.3 Vortex V-6 and because it is a GMC, it has the stronger springs and suspension system. Our goal is to be "we are building an airplane frame of mind" in reference to being weight conscious. Our heaviest items will be water and off grid battery bank. Making sure that all tires will be all terrain and nitrogen filled. The back will be completely modular and most power will come from the batttery bank, which will be recharged from roof mounted solar panels and wind turbine generator. May even add a stronger alternator, so that it too can charge the battery bank while driving. Goal is to have single stand up shower, compact fridge, 2-burner stove, regular a/c plugs, usb plugs, etc. On demand water heater for night time use will be a must, as well as a water filtration system. Thank you for sharing!

The board behind the passenger chair is a great idea, it serves in my opinion as a safety board in case of an accident you have the board to protect the passenger from anything coming towards the seat. I knew of some people who where traveling with some bakery equipment they where in an accident and the passenger got hit realy badly because all the equipment in the van rolled towards the front, they got hit with a huge mixer. So in my opinion I would leave the board or put the cage wall for both driver and passenger.

I have been watching stealth camping videos for 6 months or so. I am amazed with how much detail and nuts and bolts information you give in one video. You give practical advice you have picked up over the years. But you are going to make peoples lives camping so much easier. Add your mix of being able to work with your hands and make alot of your own needed equipment such as the backup camera, custom window screen, room darkeners. Just fantastic. Can't wait to watch some other videos. Although not sure if it is funny or annoying when you laugh at your own silly jokes so much. Guess it is funny. Thanks for making your videos.

That looks like one of those Chevrolet police vans. If I was ever going to do something like that, I would get either a Cheverolet Express or Ford E350 police van and convert it. Police porse vehicles have higher capacity alternators, so you can run a lot more electrical stuff off them.

I have watched a lot of vids but I relate to your style and open concept. I have just bought a express 2020 extended van that I have rigged to pull my 13 foot v nose cargo van that i am customizing to work as a combo unit with the van. Or the van will be a stand alone unit when needed. I just did a cross Canada trip to try it out and I love it. After 40 years of wildcrafting, sleeping in tents and the back of pickups this is a dream to me. I need to learn more about insulating and wiring the van before I start everything else. You have given me some awesome ideas and I can now see light at the end of the tunnel. Thx so much for that.

Michael you have really brought a level of quality that van dwelling needs..i couldn't agree more, a pleasing interior is a happy place, i recall my fathers 81 G20 cabinets fondly and stashed as many gijoes and Xmen comics as i ever needed! What a great design and great walk through! Now what i want to know is what do the guts look like?stud size? anchors in the sheet metal? because i have a sheet of birch that is ready to boogie!
@BackroadsVanner
@BackroadsVanner 9 жыл бұрын
+Shawn Hughes Thanks for your comments and questions Shawn! I used the frame of the van as the "studs." If the birch plywood is to build your cabinets, I would run a 1x3 across the inside top front and the inside bottom front of the cabinets and secure that to the ceiling and the floor using screws into the metal van braces or into the wood you attached to the van braces (depending on where you are attaching). Depending on the size of your cabinets and where you are placing them, if there is a metal brace behind the cabinets, I would run a 1x3 in the back of your cabinets and attach them to the metal brace using screws. For this, I use self-tapping metal screws. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching!

Great build. Simple, clean, and with a purpose. You mentioned the insulation on the build. Did you use something like Dynamat or reflectix aluminized stick on insulation or did you use something else like foam sheets/spray foam for curved areas and tight spaces? I definitely subscribed and am looking forward to seeing more. One of the best builds on here that I've seen!

+Silentbobz28 The short answer is: I used reflectix, fiberglass insulation and foam sheets. Stay tuned for the long answer as I plan on doing a video on this exact subject - coming very soon! Thank you for subscribing. We really appreciate you watching and we appreciate your comments.

Wow! Your camper van is a lot nicer than Cycle Cruza's and/or Delirious Doughnut's van (same setup/style).

Glad you clarified which drawers you were referring to, brother. Many awesome ideas, several of which will be helpful in my own d.i.y. van conversion. Love the rumble of acceleration as your van disappears in the exit clip, as well as the background music.

Incredibly awesome job on the Van and love the colors. Thank you for sharing. I can't wait to begin my van living for a year or two while I save for a small parchment of land to build a barn/shed to live in with food forest, vegan landscaping, aqua-panics green house, etc. You folks ROCK! I look forward to keeping up with all your videos. Blessings

+Falagi LG Thanks so much for your comments! You're going to love what we have coming up. We recently purchased a small farm in the country and are planning to do extensive remodeling to the small farmhouse and also plan to build a barn. We will be videoing every step of the way. Just one more step closer to our goal of simpler living. So please stay tuned!

New subscriber here. Just stumbled on your van tour video and loved it! I have a 1998 Roadtrek that we camp with during the summer but always wanted to buy a cargo van to customize for fall and winter trips. Just curious if you have installed any kind of heater for yours? I have heard a lot of people favor the diesel heaters. Thanks and look forward to more videos.
