If this is about the first thing you saw as per vans--- you really lucked out. These guys are simple and direct yet thorough and not sooo out there that you can't do something similar. Nor so cheap it looks like they are camping in a thrift store for the night. Good, practical style, with current colors, etc. (But i would have installed a much larger sink! And a freezer the same size as the fridge. As well as killer AC! But I'm going to the desert! That spray in foam is the BEST! I might install radiant floor heat--- just for even heating so no fumes or smell or CO2. And a sound system and maybe a tv but i haven't had one in my condo for over 5 years so maybe not!)

He did all that for less than 12-13k EUR... That's what expired me to buy a van and start with my own build, I even have the similar budget of 15k EUR for this project! Don't let this discourage you guys, you can get away with less than 5,000 EUR and still have a luxury looking camper build!

Seattle is very expensive to live especially to buy. So, it's better to live in alternative housing for a while and save money and as they are traveling throughout the country they will discover places that offer a lot more for less and may decide to settle down there. What I like about this couple and their lifestyle is freedom and convenience because if something happens to either of their parents they can leave and be there for them and have their home with them. They can stay as long as they like because one person isn't stuck back at an over expensive apartment and worrying about rent and other problems. Her school classes are online and so is his work. If they stayed in Seattle she might have chosen more traditional schooling and photography jobs that would have made her tided to that location. This van life puts them in a position that few others have.

This should really help anyone considering doing a conversion. I'd say 80% of anyone's costs can be quantified in advance but it's so easy to just jump in without doing those sums. So many unfinished projects out there when cash ran out. One tactic is to build the basics but allow the needed space for extras later. The Espar D2 is a great example.....run the ancilliaries for it....power cables, fuel line, hot air pipe all for under a £100 ...leave space for the main unit and controller which together cost £1000 and buy it when you have the extra cash. (Check with the dealer that your chosen equipment locations are viable.) You guys did a great job on the van both design and build management. It's really generous of you to share this financial info....can't have been an easy thing to share. So many people who have no clue of what these items cost or what value they bring to the mobile home, will judge you harshly. Not everyone has that kind of money to spend and that can make a person feel jealousy. That's no fault of yours. Happy travels everyone. John

It shouldn't be that expensive. I feel like they were lied to and are just rolling with it. They have two panels and IDK how many batteries. Panels are usually about $1 a watt. So a 100 watt panel should cost around $100. Give or take a few bucks depending on brand, quality, etc. Then the batteries cost a bit depending on what kind but unless you are buying 10 batteries it shouldn't cost you any where near 9k. That's the most expensive one I have seen so far. But they paid for peace of mind as well. Which for some people is priceless.

This was great. I am just toying with the idea of a van right now but looking at your van I would have thought you spent more. Not that I had a reference of any sort, but if you paid approx. $25K a year to rent and have nothing to show for your money at the end paying $25K seems like a no-brainer. I realize there are operating costs but at least you have an asset that if you wanted to sell if after a year it would be worth something but after a year of renting you have nothing to show for your money. If you work on the road, did you look at creative accounting methods to help write-off some of those costs on your taxes? Great video and very useful.

Why spray foam insulation as opposed to Rockwool type of insulation?

I find it so funny that when I was watching this video, a Bentley commercial came up. As if anyone watching this was thinking, hmm how to save money living in a van, maybe I should buy a Bentley instead 🤔😂🤣

Honestly these van videos are super addictive and has me saying “screw it. I’m selling my 9500 sq ft house, my Ferrari, Audi R8, Porsche , Mercedes AMG and doing a van conversion so I can park next to a beautiful beach and lay in my van, on my mattress with the back doors open so I can smell the fresh air while my husband is taking a poop in our composting toilet next to the coffee maker. Aaahhh, Van Life.”
