VAN LIFE IN HAWAII: Renting a Van and Camping in the North Shore of Oahu!

After a few days in the Waikiki area, we rented a Volkswagen Westfalia from Hawaii Surf Campers to explore the North Shore of Oahu! We started our North Shore adventure with a must do stop at Matsumoto Shave Ice for a delicious treat. We then stopped at Laniakea Beach, "Turtle Beach," to see sea turtles. After an amazing sunset on the beach, we headed to our campsite at Mangrove Lounge for the night!

my late older brother used to take me to Matsumoto's when I was a boy, so I am loyal to Matusumoto's. you're correct when you said that there's usually a line, but that's part of the experience - you get to see what other get, you meet people from around the world and the excitement of finally getting to the front of the line is great! I hope you got a t-shirt - one of original designs is actually one of the top-selling designs of all time (world record?) for the company Hanes...

fun fact: according to scientists, Hawaii is the best place on earth to see rainbows... you should go to Haleakala (maui) or Mauna Loa (big island) to see the sunrise/sunsets...

I owned a VW camper van in the very early eighties. It was fantastic. We had a 7 year old and an infant. It was so fun. Very nostalgic. Glad you are enjoying it.

Hahaha! I live right on the other side from Hawaii Surf Campers! Right around the corner from them, is Manoa Honey & Mead. In the surrounding area are various eateries & supermarkets. Having grown up in Haleiwa(Hah-lay-ee-vah) & Waialua, am Very familiar w/stores & eateries. Several eateries which are Must Tries include... Mama Nita's food truck(

Funny enough, you are not the first person to tell us that! We chose the name from the TV show, "Avatar the Last Airbender." It is an old Nickelodeon show, one of the characters is a flying bison named Appa that they travel on so we thought it was fitting. BUT we should start telling people it is because of the Korean word, it would make for a more interesting reason 😂 Thank you for so much for watching!
