You have the perfect cooker there (with lid) for what I make a LOT... one pot meal. Brown some ground meat until done. Add 1/2 chopped onion, bell pepper, 3/4 cup uncooked rice, garlic powder, salt pepper, dash of tumeric, 1 pkg beefy onion lipton soup mix. Stir up into meat first. Add 1 3/4 cup water. Simmer covered until rice is done... about 20-25 min without stirring. I love this and if you love fennel that's good too. Give the meat a more italian sausage flavor. I serve up with cayenne pepper sprinkled on it. So many variations on this too using pasta instead, etc. Good alone or with a simple side... slice avacado, etc.

I for one am glad to see a video on how cooking and clean up is done in a van. My camping experience has mostly been over fires or on grills. Not much help in bad weather! And I agree on your choice of meats. I've never been a big meat eater but I can get behind humane raising, and hopefully a much more humane end for the animals we eat. Good for you Bob! Thanks!

If you add water to that pan and scrape all of the meat specks out then add a Tablespoon of flour or cornstarch and whisk it, you could clean your pan and make gravy for your Salsbury Steak!!

I was going to say that! Or go the au jous way and just add a slice of onion to the pan drippings, brown it (a minute or two) and add water. Cook thoroughly and as you say, use the flipper (a wooden one to not damage the pan) to scrape any stuck bits. Then por the whole thing in a cup or bowl. You could then fill the same pan with water and boil some noodles, veggies, whatever. Voila the pan is clean.

Great tips, Bob! Between a copper chef pan with a lid and a small 3 qt. Instant Pot, I can cook or bake (I’ve got an insert for the Instant Pot for baking) almost anything. And, powering a small Instant Pot with an inverter is not a big deal-when I’ve been out of power on occasion I’ve gone to a laundromat with the Instant Pot and cooked a dish while I did laundry. (Laundries almost always have electrical outlets). My favorite dish in the Instant Pot is sautéing hamburger and chopping it in the pot, then add 1/2 package of pasta of any kind, then a container of your favorite spaghetti sauce, topped with washed and cut mushrooms. Pour one can of chicken broth around the sides--set the pot to High Pressure for 7 minutes. Use quick release and sprinkle chopped cheese over a serving of it. Fantastic!

Thank you for showing this. I have not made the leap into nomadic life yet but I really want to. You sharing how to do what some people may consider the simplest things can help us new or want to be new nomadics in so many ways. I had been wondering what to do in bad weather, how to cook. I think I will be afraid to cook all closed up in a van though. Again thanks for sharing this.

I run a food vending business at fairs, we use basic Clorox wipes for sanitizing everything. The Clorox wipes don't actually have bleach in them, they are an ammonia based sanitizer, they make them for kitchen food surfaces too. Use them to wipe down you cooking utensils. They are cheap, buy the store brand in huge 4 packs.

Yes, bacteria is not always pathogenic. BTW, I clean my pans with a little water and I scrub it with salt. It allows cookware to become 'seasoned', which acts as nature's teflon without the toxic stuff. You can season any cookware...doesn't have to be cast iron.

Hi Bob, have you ever tried the packages of wild rice micro packs, instead of using the micro, you fry pan some onions cut up in butter and add can peas or corn and your hamburger bites, and the add package of wild rice, add what spices you like, low cook for about 3 to 4 minutes, this makes a great and easy dish, I use, beef, chicken , pork it all works, enjoy, be safe

I drive an 18 wheeler for a living. I cook in my truck all the time. I have a 2500 watt power inverter. I use a George Foreman grill. A microwave. And a lunch box oven which is 12 volt. I line my grill with foil and never have to really clean it. I use Clorox wipes to clean everything. I eat steaks all the time. Cooking is easy to do with the things I have. I used. To carry a butane stove, and electric skillet. But never really used them.

On the way to the 2020 RTR, with bacon grease still in the pan that i made breakfast with, I made lunch for my wife and son. I fried up chickenfried steaks, seasoned with salt n pepper, dipped in egg, and rolled in Bisquick pancake mix and fried golden brown, with mashed taters, homemade gravy made from the left over skillet grease, Bisquick and milk, and corn for a veggie. It was a fun time. I did this in our 98 coachmen camper van. I would rather have done it in, and also taken, our 2006 high-top cargo van because even with 3 people aboard, it has MORE room than the coachmen, but the wife likes being seen in the coachmen more than the cargo van :( . Yep the wife likes the camper van but I like the high top cargo van, it was cheaper and i did the build out which brings me joy that it's such a cool space inside to stay in. Lol, i went through a few paper towels too! Lol

Hey Bob, I agree that not enough germs is unhealthy. Something I do at home is I use a cast iron skillet, clean it with water and a paper towel like you do and the put it back on the burner to heat it up. It dries the skillet and it also kills any germs. I also generally preheat the skillet when I start cooking as an additional precaution. Keep up the good videos and when I get my truck cap done I'll get you a picture, I haven't forgotten about it, I just trying to get my house ready do sell.

Handy Dandy Bob! Had to chuckle as a fellow batchelor. This is typical cooking for us simple efficient fellas and probably some ladies as well. Whether we're living in a van or a stationary dwelling. Wondering how an induction cook top might work in a van, and if ya have had any experience with them Bob, or anyone else in the comments for that matter. I see you've got the copper shef deep square pan there Bob. It works great like you said, I've got one also and cook just about everything in it. Got mine with the copper chef induction cook top and was thinking, maybe it would work well as a van cooker if I had solar but not sure how much power the induction cook tops draw. I see them in nicer RVs but wondering if they would work for small solar setups. If anyone out there has experience with or info on induction cook tops with solar I'd be all ears.😁

You are one of few people who approach ethics of meat like I do; its not about the death of the cow, that will always happen in nature or at a farm. Its about the life of the animal, how it lived, did it see grass, sunshine, etc. Raising animals in confinement is unethical and it rubs off on our society, I think its why everyone is so cruel and lacks empathy. Handling blood and raw meat does not make you sick though; they just tell you that to make you waste more food and spend more money. You are a great inspiration.

Didn't know those fry pans were ceramic. You could've just used a little dish detergent and a small amount of water and then it would all come out at sitting a bit, less paper towels. Food borne illnesses are just too common these days due to lack of hygiene. Due to that fact, I never eat out. It's just too expensive to risk getting food poisoning and being on your death bed and having to spend thousands of dollars at some medical facility. Thanks for your fun and informative video, Bob.

It would be nice to see a video about propane less cooking. I enjoy the small Dash low voltage appliances. I have several of them and it super quick, easy and safe. I am not sold on the reliance of canned fuel. These small low voltage appliance can run off solar power/power bank very easily. I believe it's possible to do RVing with no propane and butane. That expense can be completely cut out.

122 people dislike cooking in their vans. That was a nice perspective to see how it's done, especially with minimal waste. You could go a step further by using cotton wash clothes to mop up the mess and then take the soiled rags to the laundromat with whatever else needs to be cleaned. I wonder how steamy it would get in really cold temperatures and if that would be a cause for concern or not. 🤔

I prefer using a portable 110 inductive burner (electric). Just my personal attitude. It is so much more efficient. It boils water twice as fast. If you used a small propane power generator, it would use 30% less propane than the way you are doing it. That adds up. It is not impractical for a solar/battery system. And a lot of the time there is shore power. The same kind of ceramic fry pan you have works better on an inductive burner, I have one just like it, and have tried both ways. You have to use a lower setting on the inductive burner to get the same heat. The pan you have and use is inductive ready. There is no reason you could not have both packed away in your van. I have a Burton inductive burner. It really works well. Avoid the cheap Chinese clones, but the Burton is not expensive. It is much easier to clean if there is a boil over. It is better for heating water to wash dishes, wash clothes, shave, even for showers. Overall I figure I save about an hour a day of my time. Thanks.

Eating meat for people needs no respect, it is nature but people want to ignore nature today! Nature provides us with 2 types of teeth! The sharp front teeth are meant to rip and tear and bite through meat, simple as that! The flat side teeth are meant to crush and pulverize meat, vegetables, and grains and simple as that. If people were only meant to eat vegetables and grains like a horse or cow then we would have nothing but flat teeth. I used to raise many animals for meat for my family and I, they had free range on 12 acres and all ate nothing but wild vegetable growth in woods as nature intended and grains I feed them extra, and guess what, none of then had any sharp meat eating teeth, but WE do. Sadly yes, big corporations often do not care for animals properly and also ruin our food supply with trash additives and garbage solutions to jack up prices adding water to meats, and even more sadly most consumers are to stupid to see this is just garbage to jack up prices and they keep buying the crap.

@@denstump4590 Geez, that first paragraph could not be more wrong. Have you seen the teeth of gorillas? Fangs and all? They are strict vegetarians. I love it when arm chair biologists start playing all expert to prove their choices are right and other's choices are wrong.. And btw, just for fun, after raising so many horses and cows, you never once saw those FLAT incisors in the front?

Yes. Meat eater here but only free range and humanely raised. I will never get on the radical PETA vegetarian bandwagon until they also support NOT killing unborn, and now, freshly born humans.

Hey man you need to go by harbor freight and pick up a box of disposable gloves. 100 count box for like 7 or 8 dollars. Great for handling meat without contaminating your hands and everything else.

Using plastics can be a problem of it's own. And a person could still grab the spray bottle with gloves on. Better to use a disinfectant to cleanup.

The thing is you dont want to touch anything before washing your hands after touching the raw meat. Water is limited in a van and most camping scenarios. Use the gloves to prepare the meat and put it on to cook and then dispose of the gloves. The spray bottle disinfectant is a great idea.

The canned ham, not the ham and lima beans, out of "C rats" was excellent, right at air temp. (105-110 degrees or more in the sun) My most prized possession was my P-38 can opener.

OK, you just had your skillet frying burgers well in excess of two hundred degrees which was in effect an autoclave killing any germs/bacteria. Why all the needless after the fact sanitation? Take a cue from cast iron, just wipe it clean and put it away. On the other end, when you fire that sucker up again, it takes just a few seconds of preheat to sterilize the pan again before use. Oh, and by the way, a tablespoon of household bleach in a gallon of water is at least 10 times more effective than vinegar as a disinfectant. It is all science not campfire gossip.

Hi, Bob! Been awhile. We love hamburgers too. We make them like you as well. We are looking to get a new gas tabletop grill real soon since we love to grill in the summer. Thanks for sharing your ideas. Vinegar is our goto but I will incorporate the Hydrogen peroxide after your advice. Agree about the germs.

Really enjoyed watching you cook hamburger patties in your van, Bob. Appreciated hearing your philosophy about consuming the flesh of animals, too. After all, if God had not wanted us to eat animals, He would not have made them out of meat. ;^) Bon Appetit!
