On the NC500 - I have ridden it twice, by motorcycle, during peak season. Tbh, it's miserable during peak season due to the numbers of camper vans that cause havoc down the narrow lanes. I'd advise late September or early October. The days tend to be more settled and the cooler nights have killed many of the midges off. You'll have a blast, but consider carefully the Bealach na Bà as it is very steep and technical. Camper vans may not be allowed, but busses are. It's up to you!

the NC 500 is amazing, 15th July will be the earliest you can possibly do it but I was looking at a campsite in Orkney earlier, somewhere I recommend - if you can get custard on a ferry, and they were shut until August 10th. No coincidence that the Scottish schools go back on the 11th if you ask me.

You should definitely stop in a place called Applecross on the west coast, it's stunning. We did it last year in a big wagon and found the roads ok. There's loads of amazing wild camping spots x

My ancestors are from Applecross! I was fortunate to see it decades ago. It’s really beautiful. The American branch of the family left Applecross some time in the late 19th century. I’m pretty sure it was my great grandmother’s mother that was from there. I was visiting members of the family who were part of the line that stayed. Most of them eventually settled in and around Inverness.

With the inverter you bought (800 Volt Ampere=Watt) you can't run an induction cooktop. For that you need an inverter with 2000 Watts.

@@kingingit I'd suggest you choose the induction cooktop first and check how many Watts it has. Then you think what other devices you want to run of the inverter at the same time and sum all the Watts up. Then you choose an inverter which can deliver these Watts (or VA, it's the same). There are two different types of inverters: cheap non-sine wave and more expensive sine ones. They say electronic devices can get damaged buy non-sine inverters. You can buy any from a well-known company like Victron. There are also non-brand China inverters available. They doesn't have to be crap. Maybe you have a look how loud the fan is. My Dometic 350W is loud at the moment...

Being a mechanic by trade . At this moment my heart dropped 7:39 LMAO that's the axle sweetheart . Make sure that axle seal is replaced or put new RTV on ( whatever MBZ's specs are for it ) I would hate for you two to lose axle fluid and have to put more money towards a new rear end. Much cheaper replacing the seal now then later.

Kinging- Okay , what you took off originally the (black inner bolts in the rim) thinking they were to take off wheels are for hold the axle bolts. The Axle moves a shaft that connect the rear end that moves the van go forward from the driveline to the transmission . Loosening those bolts can cause a leak in the axle tube. Just make sure to have it checked before long distance travel.

If you’re going to do Scotland north coast, I advise go in April or July they are the least rainy seasons. Also, you absolutely need to get yourself Avon skin so soft for the midges - nothing else works as well and you’ll hate Scotland if you are being eaten alive the whole time.

Hi guys! Love seeing you working on custard again! 😍👍👏👏 (I annoy my teenage kids by singing the custard song 😂). I live on the NC500 route. Currently ATM in Scotland were still pretty locked down still, only allowed 5 miles journey (pref by foot or bike) for exercise, etc and campsites, cafes, etc are still shut. We’ve got such limited infrastructure for dealing with the virus (number of hospital beds, very long distances to travel for treatment, etc), a large elderly community and - to this point - we’ve not been hit as much as areas further south, so travelling up here is strongly discouraged still currently. Officially a lot of good vanlife overnight stops, like Forestry Commission car parks, are closed too... and public loos. Normally at this time of year the NC500 is bonkers with people doing the route. I would say that, as soon as restrictions are lifted up here, things are probably going to be quite congested with people making trips up (you’ll probably know the route is a lot on really minor roads with little scope for overtaking, etc) but if you want any tips for things to see and places where you’d be able to get the bus in easily, or an up to date on what the scene is like up here, give me a shout 👍

Kinging- It actually, since I’ve posted we’ve had the news that some self catering accommodation is opening up from the 3rd / 4th July, and from 15th for campsites, hotels, etc. Also from 3rd July we’re allowed to travel without restriction for leisure and exercise 😀 (yay!)... so things are moving along a bit quicker than was expected 👍. I imagine September might look a lot different to now 👍. But if you’re considering weather, even Oct can be a good time to travel up here - yes it will be starting to get chilly, but it’s not necessarily Baltic, and we’ve often camped in Oct. plus if you travel from the second half of sept to Oct you’ll be free of the midges - however bad you’ve been told they are, imagine that ten times worse 😬☠️ (think sometimes not being able to make a cup of tea without the surface floating with them... possibly INSIDE your van or tent! 😂 getting bitten on the bum 40 times just from peeing in a bush 😂) Again, if you want any local info and stuff you could feature that’s less known about / not so much covered by other youtubers, give me a shout! 😊(Seal watching, bonkers mini castle with a mystery builder that disappeared, ruined houses for exploration, lesser known waterfalls, bone caves, why a statue on a hill is so hated the locals want it torn down, where the last witch was burned, spooky ancient burial chamber you can go inside, etc) 😊👍
