Another random tip is to never let your gas tank get below 1/4 tank in case you get somewhere late and don't feel comfortable and then have to drive for awhile to get to a safer location. For any kind of road traveling, it's always good to fill up whenever you can b/c you don't want to find yourself on empty in any kind of emergency situation out in the boonies.

We solo female travelers should also learn ways to effectively defend ourselves. Not all of us have time to take self-defense classes so I'd like to share some tips which I have learned. I've been taking Krav Maga for women classes for self-defense and so far I've learned that the best self- defense targets on a mans body for women, and the best ways of striking them are as follows: - the eyes (finger poke them) - the nose (palm heel strike upwards) - the throat (chopping like actions) - the testicles (knee / kick / punch / slap / grab-twist-pull and *hold on to them* until he collapses and passes out within a matter of seconds) - the knees (sideways kick to dislocate) I've been taught that even a trained, determined teenage girl could easily take down a man if she goes for these targets, especially if she goes fast and hard for the *eyes* or the *testicles* (or "high balls" and "low balls" as I've also heard them called.) If he's removed his trousers and he is about to rape you, then his testicles will now be *extremely vulnerable* to a "grab, twist, pull and hold" counterattack, and you should keep squeezing them as hard as you can (you can even use both hands, and it's still extremely effective even if you manage to grab one testicle) until he passes out in under 8 seconds. When a man has his testicles forcefully squeezed it causes him to curl over and quickly lose all of his strength no matter how big and strong he is - great for us women to know. This technique has actually saved many women. We all can fight effectively against attackers if we know exactly where and how to strike.

As a solo, female, world traveler - when staying in dodgy pensions or rooms - when I open the door I say, "Hi, I'm back...are you awake?" or, "Hi, I'm home - did you eat something?". Can't hurt to make it a habit to do this. We never know who was put off or dissuaded by this simple trick. BTW, I've also lived alone for many years at a time and, when answering a door (and not expecting someone to be there - esp. at night) I always say "Oh the pizza's here" before opening the door. This would make potential bad guys think (a) someone else is in the home and (b) they are expecting pizza soon (someone else to come to the home) so not a good time or place to cause trouble.

My two cents: I keep a hammer, an air horn, I have knives stashed everywhere. Just big kitchen knives, but put them where you can get to them but where they are hidden (I just hide them everywhere in the cracks between things, like under the seat, the back of the glove compartment, one laying down flat in the door pocket, etc. Regarding the bear spray: it's illegal in a lot of places. I have mace that I wear on my wrist and also one that I carry. They each can shoot 35 feet. I buy what is used by cops. I'd like to have exterior cameras so that at night you can see around your vehicle. I see people putting those on, and they are small and don't seem outrageously expensive. Also, watch what you tell people! Never say to someone, "I'm camping alone" "It's just me and my dog" etc. Not smart. Last, always let your family know where you are. Just a text is enough. "Parking lot Walmart, El Cajon" Good video. I really enjoyed this one.

just spent 60 days on road myself. I keep my car key on a chain on my neck. I actually keep all my money and credit cards in a small wallet on my neck and never take it off. Xmas lights on Windows at night. night light inside. I pack up my campsite every night completely and reposition my van facing forward so I can just pull out in an emergency. Someone did try to get in my van at 1 am and I just pulled out on like 3 minutes. Never let anyone think your dog is friendly and let people come up let her. No matter how much you want to blend in everyone knows you are alone.

Wasp spray will shoot 20 feet plus it's cheap so you could a few cans in different places another thought might be a can air horn that is used by boaters, very loud to draw attention to a situation.

Bearfoot Theory :They say go for the face plus the range is good and by all means bear spray is better, as a Truck driver the govt. says I cannot have bear spray in the truck. A lady that worked for the Parks in Mt said the air horn worked better than the bear spray, it would be a good attention getter if needed. The best in my opinion is a firearm,a person has a right not to be a victim .

Very neat video! I'll be traveling in my RV/tiny house soon and my parents were worried about my safety so these are some nice tips. ATM my safety plan is to be able to secure my RV by having locking shutters I can close a night. I also have a tazer, which you should look into getting. The sound of a little tazer going off is about as loud as a gunshot so you don't even have to be up close to scare the shit out of someone. Mine is also a LED flash light, so I can have it out and "ready" at night without feeling like a nut. I also have a large boxer/ridgeback mix that I know I can count on as a deterrent. My parents thought he was too friendly to be protective, but we sure proved them wrong! I told my dad to put on a hoodie and act like he was breaking into the house. My dog was on him like white on rice! Knocked him onto the floor and got his arm trapped in his mouth.

Even when camping in a tent, if my car is near enough, I always keep my keys handy so I can hit my panic alarm on my car in case of an emergency. The noise of the alarm drawing attention to my area would hopefully be enough to scare away any predator. (human or animal).

Awesome stuff. This is great advice for anyone, not just women. I carry a Taser. For me, this works because there are no restrictions in most states, and in the states with restrictions, what they don't know won't hurt them. However, here is why I like the taser... I can carry it concealed legally in most of North America. If I feel threatened or am in fear for my life for any reason, I do NOT have to hesitate to use it. It will not kill my attacker and I don't have to be near them to deploy it, and it also works in close proximity. With a gun there are huge restrictions and repercussions and I would probably hesitate to save my own life. With a knife I have to be near my attacker for it to be of any use (if it came down to that) and they could likely use it against me, this also applies to any blunt objects (your hammer, for instance). I am a big proponent of the second amendment and, yes, I own guns. However, the thought of having to shoot another human being for any reason makes me very queasy. I personally don't have it in me. I have no such compulsions with a taser. I am not affiliated at all with the company. It works great for law enforcement and it's legal and I honestly don't know why anyone over the age of 18 doesn't have one. On another note, the suggestion someone else had to keep big work boots outside of your door is absolutely brilliant. I wish I had thought of that! lol
@catmonkey4351
@catmonkey4351 6 жыл бұрын
I have a taser too. It is also a flashlight and has a wrist loop so it would be very difficult to take from me - the attacker would already be tased. Best part - under $40.

at night you mention keeping drivers seat clear, good advice. Put a small hook on back of drivers seat for keys, don't let them be seen laying around dash. Also pile passenger seat full of stuff so if your trying to get out and second person is trying to get in passenger door they can't get to you with a bunch of stuff on that seat. Just a few thoughts. Stay safe. Oh and an air gun is also a good idea.

You can also get a cop taser. They're expensive; about $1000, but worth it. Also, keep your keys IN the ignition, and cover them with a black t shirt. That's what one MALE van camper does. He also warms up bottled waterb on the dashboard for an emergency sponge bath.

Great vid. Intuition is 90+ percent. Learning to be aware of surroundings and trusting your "gut" goes a long ways. On top if that, a $40 self defense class builds both the intuition and self confidence factor and is more than worth it. Lastly, Gel Mace (like your Bear Spray) with UV marking dye is one of the best self protection devices, if needed, to handle a situation. Safer to discharge in close proximity, quicker and way more effective to use than a firearm. Remember, to handle a situation means to give enough pause to the confrontation to either debilitate or get away from the attacker. A fire arm is too slow, too complicated to load, safely aim and discharge effectively and in a timely matter for self protection. Not to mention severe risk of misfire to others or self

The mallet is great and is versatile. As for the knife, I would suggest a k-bar. The one I have fits completely in my hand. No part of the handle is accessible to the bad guy to disarm me. Spray is good too but be careful with wind and ask yourself if you could medically handle it I.e. Asthma? I have a variety of things just depends on what I'm doing at the time. What ever you choose make sure your comfortable. Don't forget your car alarm makes for great noise if you need to draw attention. And a side note.....an air horn works well for those repeated phone solicitors who don't take you off their calling list.

Buy a revolver. Smith & Wesson 686p 3 or 4 inch barrel. It's stainless steel easy to use. Uses 357 mag or 38 special. It's a great outdoors/backpacker weapon. It's heavy enough that the recoil is not a valid with 357 magnum rounds. It may be counterintuitive that such a large weapon for a female. Because it's a medium size revolver it mitigates the Kick when you shoot it.

I plan to start my van life in 2021 on New Year. Thank you for the tips. I like the idea of what you showed us. You made a good point there. For me, I am hard-of-hearing and once I take my hearing aids out, I sleep like a baby. If someone tries to break in, then I will feel the van movement but I can only hear the low noise. Maybe the next morning all my 4 tires are gone. Ha. I have a question for you. Is it better to have a 4x4 or 2x4 van to do adventure based on your experience? I plan on living in the van for a long time to travel 61 Natural Parks and do solo music. I know I have said that I am hard-of-hearing but I do play guitar, piano, and drum. I pretend to be deaf but I am able to carry the conversation without any problem. Just when I take my hearing aids out, I sleep like a baby. I think I will have a pet with me to alert me in many ways as a service dog. I have an 11-pound dog. Very intelligent. Do you have a shower inside or outdoor? I don't think I will do showering indoor. Just outdoor only but I have an idea how to shower in the back with shower curtain up and cover the roof as well to stay warm while I shower with a heater. Hard to explain here. I think of only have a compost toilet only for the inside van. The kitchen, storages, and sitting area are my top focus in the van. I hope you will help me out with this. I subscribe to you too! Thanks!

radrcer Yes.. and Always BACK in to your site. Your Vehicle needs to be pointed out to the exit. If possible leave room to back up to go as well, in case you are blocked in. I'd agree with most of the advice, especially about having an escape plan with a clear front seat and keys. I just spent a couple of months living out of a vehicle around Australia, needed an escape plan twice. I disagree on the knife. Even if you were 9'2", the knife is mine if I want it - and you don't want to be a pin cushion. Two guys tried the knife thing on me in India years ago, it didn't work out well for them. Here's the thing. In order for a knife to be useful, bad guy needs to be close. I'm not a gun person, but in the States a nice shotgun is a great peacemaker, and no one needs to get too close before it becomes useful. Driving away beats every other self defence tactic. In NZ and Australia, you're not allowed guns for self defence, or any weapon - but Krav is more useful than a weapon. Just sayin'.

The boots are a bad idea, unless you want to make a hobby of checking for scorpions, spiders, and venomous snakes.

What is your opinion of a dog, like a German Shepard or a Rottweiler, along with you?

Creed M I would think that even a small dog would be beneficial as an early warning system. Another useful addition is monitoring cameras outside the van.

My boyfriend and I have a dog, but the dog usually stays home with my boyfriend because he is being trained as a medical service dog. But yes, I think that having a dog is definitely an extra layer of security.

I want to add this because I didn't see anyone else say it. Bear spray is illegal to use on a human. It is considered a pesticide and includes really dangerous ingredients. Pepper spray will incapacitate anyone who is not wearing a full gas mask and has no regulations as of this date. Avoid the lawsuit - use pepper spray.

She would still go to jail especially because yhey havw to prove thr assailant was just "walking " past. Surviors of an assault have gone to jail for an illegal pesticide when thr assailant was able to disprove the assault credibility

This is a risky lifestyle to be honest . Perhaps I’m too cautious what if someone slash your tire and lure you out to attack you ? Too many crazy people at there if someone has a gun and sprees into your car there is no hiding , it’s just direct and no way to move , I’m just too afraid and thinking what might go wrong

Rubber mallet would just waste your time and do you no good. Wooden baseball bat is very good. Not full size to hard to swing and you may not have enough room for a good swing, this is You or them, lets have a goof swing girl. A Halibut club? your Dad will know.

you didn't mention that the spot and inreach both have subscription fees. How much are they? One thing i thought would be neat would be a PA system attached to the top of the van. Something you can activate with a flip of a switch with programmed alarms and the ability to call for help through it. could be cheap and wouldn't take much to mount
@bearfoottheory
@bearfoottheory 7 жыл бұрын
Mitchell - yes that's correct. The subscription fees depend on what package you get. With SPOT, they start at $20 per month & Garmin InReach starts at $12 per month.

All those defensive 'weapons' may make you feel good while you're making the video, but none would be worth a damn in an actual attack. The knife & mallet require you to be within arms reach of the attacker. Once the attacker gets that close to you... it's too late... he will take those items away from you faster than you can scream 'oh no'. The bear (or wasp) spray could be effective... IF it's nearby, and IF you have a couple of seconds to get it oriented so that you spray it in the right direction... and it may not stop someone high on drugs. (do an online search of "Tueller Drill") The radios are obviously of no used in an attack situation. If you want the very best protection... far and away better than anything you showed us... and you may not like the answer... but it's a handgun. IF you are proficient with it... and it's available to you ALL the time. If outside the RV, you must keep it on your body all the time. Sure it's a PITA, but consider the consequences. (I don't walk the 60 ft to my mailbox without a gun in my hand.) Look at flashbangstore.com, which seems an interesting way for females to carry a compact handgun, if anatomically so equipped, which you look like you are. All the best.

Why don't you carry a gun? If you don't want to own a handgun, get a shotgun. Everyone recognizes the sound of a shotgun when it's being racked. You shoot center mass...don't have to be a sharpshooter for it to be effective. Remember....Guns are the great equalizer and you don't have to be at close range to use it as you would if you used a knife or a mallet or ball bat.
