Great video, however, you missed one VERY IMPORTANT detail. When adding a fuse tap, it is IMPERATIVE that you determine which side of the fuse is the lead (where the power comes in) so that you know which direction to install the fuse tap. If you install it backwards, you bypass the fuse and the mirror is not protected. This also means that if the mirror shorts out, not only will the fuse not protect it, but the short can also cause issues on the battery side of the fuse box. I have seen a shorted wire melt the insulation off of a wire (and fill the vehicle with smoke). So... make sure to install the wire tap facing the correct way. There are numerous videos that explain how to correctly orient a wire tap. Otherwise this video was both helpful and informative. Thanks!

If you unscrew the drivers side hand bat and the sun visor, you could run the cable through there and then have the cable peak out right where the mirror goes.

Awesome video. I followed your instructions and got this working. Only caveat is that it seems like the passenger window is always live (at least my case). The effect is that the camera display stays on even when the key is off the ignition. Any pointers to make the display go active only when car is on? (I know the unit stays on for other features but the display being on all the time bugs the hell out of me!! Thanks!
@teatimeinthealpine57523 жыл бұрын
Yeah I agree. The passenger window should not be live when the vehicle is off. What likely is happening is that the mirror is running off its internal battery. I agree that it is annoying. I wish there was a setting that would automatically shut off the screen. Their idea here is that it will continue to run so the camera picks up any vandalism when you are not in the van. I just wish the screen would shut off automatically, and the camera would keep running until the internal battery dies. I haven't found a fix yet. Maybe the internal battery is removable? lol.

@@teatimeinthealpine5752 Yes! I checked with the volt meter.. and the true ACC port (one that comes on when engine starts) is the USB/12v ports. The fuse for these are under the hood.. going to see if I can route to it and will let you know! - Thanks!

Thanks for sharing! I just bought a Promaster as well and after watching your video, I'm considering doing exactly what you've done. Based on other reviews I've seen on this camera, I'm concerned it might not work well as a back-up cam. What is your experience so far? Do you think the view field is too narrow to be useful when backing up?

Thank you for this great, useful video! Question regarding the Red Wire (min 8:38) - shouldn't it go to the REVERSE LIGHT FUSE only in order to get the park assits grid lines when backing? Fuse F38 - for what circuit is it? Is it for Centarl Lock? I have a Citroen Jumper which to certain extent is similar to the RAM Promaster, but the electrical circuits might differ since it has a Diesel engine and is built according to Euro specifications.
@teatimeinthealpine57524 жыл бұрын
F38 is for the central lock. Great question on the red wire. You can do it this way. I wanted it to only act as a rear view mirror. I actually prefer the factory back up camera when reversing into a parking spot. The factory camera also has the park assist lines. If your van doesn’t have the factory camera I can understand why you would want to do it that way.
@gregceban70104 жыл бұрын
@@teatimeinthealpine5752 Thank you for the answer, but still not quite clear. I also want to use it mainly as a PERMANENT rear view camera (no rear windows), but I do not mind if it gets me the park assist lines when in reverse - there is no OEM backup camera on my van. If I connect the red wire into backing lights, wouldn't it be possible to also use the camera for permanent rear view.??? I also do not really want to record anything when the engine is off as it is going to drain the battery - how to prevent it from doing this?. It is pity they put the better camera to the front which is mostly useless (unless a bit paranoiac). PS: Sorry for too many questions!
@teatimeinthealpine57524 жыл бұрын
@@gregceban7010 gotcha. Because I didn’t try this method I don’t want to give you wrong information. In theory your suggestion should work well. Worse case scenario you can always wire it like I did. Also there is a power button on the mirror. You can always shut it off that way so that it doesn’t drain the battery. Also, you can setup your rear camera to be 2.5k which is what I did. I don’t care about the front camera so I wanted better resolution on the rear.

@@teatimeinthealpine5752 the hardwire kit I received was faulty. They sent a new one and it works. When you use the central locking fuse to connect the camera does it always stay on unless you manually turn it off? Battery drain?
