This song takes me back to remember my dear friend Cynthea who was a ballerina. Three years ago she voluntarily checked out of this world after a 6 year battle with PTSD following a horrific assault where a crazy guy left her alone after attempting rape and murder. She literally saved her own life that night in LA and did everything she could to pull herself together. But eventually she just ran out of will to keep going. I always think of her when I hear Van singing this song. The most courageous woman I’ve ever known.

Montreux 1980 is the go-to version of this sublime classic! I much prefer John Plantania’s electric guitar pickings as well as Jeff Labes’s piano work on that version, as well as Mark Isham on flugelhorn. Van’s voice is in fine form here, though.
