Van Morrison grew up dead-broke poor in Belfast, N Ireland when it was full of poverty & violence. Natural musician. When he was 16 or so he went to the biggest band in Belfast and said “I’m your new guitar player.” The bandleader said “We don’t need a guitar player. We need a saxophone player.” Three weeks later he came back, said “I’m your new saxophone player.”, and got the job.

Van Morrison: Ireland's gift to the world. He's probably the greatest poet-singer to ever come from my ancestral home. His music always reminds me of Autumn, my favorite season. His music is visceral and so multilayered. Rich, like the Autumn air. Today being September 1st, I broke out my Autumnal Playlist. The first song is "Into the Mystic." @Jamel, you should react to some Cat Stevens songs. "Wild World," would be a good one to start with, then maybe "Morning Has Broken," or "Peace Train." He's got quite the catalog, too.

For me, it's about my Dad and his feelings for me. As an adult, I realise the song is about America and how "Sweet " Freedom is. Tupelo Honey is only found in America. The beginning of America's history began with a dumping of tea. "You can't stop us on the road to freedom" The men in granite, Mt Rushmore. Van is an Irishman, there is a lot of history and there was unrest in Ireland. This song is a romantic one to America, from afar.

The most recognizable Van Morrison song and my personal favorite with those great lyrics . A great lyricist paints a picture in your mind eyes. You can feel as if you are there. Everything about this song is A+. The singing of course but the sax,the keyboards, the guitars even the background vocals. The entire song is like a smoldering simmering fire. No shouting just a smooth touch.

Thanks for the back-story! Never knew about the title. Knew it was a town in Mississippi that Elvis came from, but not about the swamp trees. Hmm... Hard to reach, but worth the journey .. She's THATsweet!

The background singing, “She’s an angel” just adds another layer of emotion to this intimate song. Love it sooo much! Glad you experienced it! ❤️

Van Morrison has so much incredible work.... The love songs are nice, but some of his music is so deep its mind bending.....Music that can put you in different world.

this is one of my most favorite Van Morrison songs. brings a tear to my eye every time, it's just so perfect. i don't know if you ever consider doing entire albums, but Astral Weeks is one that just needs to be experienced all at once. it's definitely one of my Desert Island discs.
