Van Staal VR50 Unboxing

I purchased this reel during Black Friday at J&H Tackle.
This reel will be used from the surf or my kayak without me worrying about water getting into the real and bearings rusting which has happened to many of my reels due to the harsh salt environment. I hope this reel is reliable and I look forward to using it.

Have multiple shimano reels as well. Older stradics and sedonas. Still work great. Went to J&H couple months ago. Looking for a new set up. Really like the lamiglass rod. Sweet!

The handle knob is made of Delrin plastic. I read that it’s super hard and durable. Developed in the 60’s by Dupont.

I have two of these , they don't hold any where near 360 yrds of 20lbs braid , mores like 290 yrds , other than that I love it

Nope. The first gens didn’t come with them. I got the reel before the bailess kit was made. Sold the reel as it had line lay loose issues. Went with the Visser No. 4 and have been very happy.

Do you think I can put a VR125 on a 9 foot Lami?

You def can. I have a 8 foot and 9 foot Lami GSB and I plan on putting a VR150 on my 9 footer. Right now I am using my Shimano Spheros 6000 SW on it. The VR150 weighs about the same as the 125 but holds more line and slightly more line retrieve.

Crazy that the VR125 is £100 cheaper than the VR50 in the UK. Can the VR125 be used as a legitimate shore spinning reel for Bass, or is it too big/heavy?

The VR125 is about a 5000 size reel

Im about to buy a VR50 but do you think it will pair up good with a 9ft Bass Pro Ocean Master? Its Medium 15-30 lbs. 1 - 3 oz. In another video they said the vr50 have alot of problems though is this true?

The reel maybe a little small for that rod. I use mine for up to 2oz on my 9 foot lami gsb light. The VR50 is still working fine for me after using it all over the island for almost 2 years. I just rinse it after each use. But only time will tell.

I have VR150. In just two season of fishing for striped bass, this thing is broken. The internal gear is busted. I had to send it back for VAN STAAL. :(

How did that happen? Did you drop it or was this during a fish battle?

Les Wang Fishing good question, this actually is my first most expensive reel. I wash and shower this damn reel all the time. Never drop or anything. One day, while I was hooking up fish at the canal, this thing just no longer can crank the fish. Send it back to Van Staal, they said the internal gear is busted, therefore it need replacement. It is kind of expensive too for the repairing.

How’s the 9’6 tiralejo holding up?

It’s been holding up good. I wanted something lighter and shorter for the north shore and one piece because I always hate having to check if the guides are lined up or the rod is loose. I think I plan on eventually getting a one piece Lami 10’ GSB and the Tiralejo will be my travel and backup surf rod.

I just checked the rod and the guide metal under the glue is rusting and some of the glue is cracked. I may have to have the rod redone and put better guides that don’t rust on like titanium in the future.

The VR50 is still great. No issues. I use my 9 footer and larger Shimano reel when I fish the south shore. I do want a VR175 or so though.

A 10’6” rod I would pair with a larger reel. But it all depends in your preference and what lures you use.
