I have worked for the largest truck body manufacturer in the country for over thirty years and keeping them from leaking has been one of the hardest things. Over that time I have become a caulking/sealing expert. Not only does it have to be sealed but also look like a high quality job . I have been resealing campers and vans for a long time now. I will be attending the RTR again this year and will be bringing my caulking tolls and supplies with me and would be glad to reseal any ones rig that is leaking free of charge. Sometimes I can do it very quickly. thanks for helping people Bob

Gringo...Do you recommend the butyl tape at all or maybe a combination of polyurethane/acrylic/silicon (outside perimeter)& butyl tape (inside perimeter of shell)? I've got a background in the bathtub restoration business, where as we placed an acrylic shell custom made for every tub and the butyl tape was used extensively to hold the shell tot he steel/cast iron tub, as well as the one piece acrylic walls. The only time our system had issues is when water got behind the acrylic and would cause the butyl to lose it stick-um. Now, if the butyl can stay dry, that stuff could hold you to the ground in a tornado....so it's plenty strong and real easy to work with. I'm just wondering long term wise, because if you do get some water penetration in that butyl, would it end up causing it to fail? Appreciate your insight since you've done this for 30 years...you're the proverbial Pro from Dover with that sort background & experience. Peace Brother

Your experience convinces me all the more that you have to watch people who work on your rig every moment. There are tons of "technicians" out there that actually have no idea what they're doing. There are so many RV's on the road now that the needs for repair way outnumber the labor pool of trained repair personnel. The market has simply expanded too rapidly.

Nice to finally see your hightop van Bob! I know you've been looking forward to this install for a very long time. I'm so sorry it came with such problems and issues. Any van build is suppose to be an enjoyable process, not work and surely not stress and emotional pain. I think I know you a little bit, having spent a few days with you building this van, and I know that for you to complain about this guy and his company took a lot from you. I also know that it's the last thing you ever wanted to do (Recommend we DON'T use this guy). I feel your pain and anguish in this, and I'm sorry it had to come to this. I'm sure you've had quite an emotional beating-up and have been very stress-out over this entire process, and I'm sorry you had to go through it, but now it's over and with great lessons learned, for you, and for all of us. Now you can move on and make it right. Things will work out and you can now get on to the next adventure. Thanks for sharing.

THANK YOU for telling the truth about James the "Fiberglass Me" guy. It's sad but it's the right thing to do. You just can't do half-ass work and expect people to pay you - to screw them. Maybe it's time for James to retire before his bad reviews on his shoddy work kills him. If he wants to stay in business maybe he should seriously look into hiring someone who KNOWS what they are doing. Normally I wouldn't be so blunt in my comment - BUT - just think . . . okay lets say you decide to re-roof your house and you pay for roofers to replace the roof..... then the rain comes... and then you and the whole family have to run all around the house with buckets, pots and pans to catch all the new leaks. I think I would be totally TICKED-OFF.

Harleyglide03 Well said, and it sounds like a case of total incompetence. The guy probably just doesn't know the trade. You would think. BUT if the guy just doesn't know how to do the work at all to start with - and there is every indication here that he doesn't - then no amount of incentive in the form of a promise of more business will change the outcome.

Didnt know it cost that much. I just moved into a 1992 hi top with 170,000 from a 1975 lo top with 300,000. I will not be able to go back to the lo top. At the cost and agrivation I suppose I could rebuild my engine and for a bit more a new transmission too. ..I gotta seal mine up a bit too, but it is 25 years old, and was installed very well by a company called Sherrod. I paid $1500 for the whole van and it runs very well, almost like new. I feel like I got heck of a deal after watching this. My plan has been to replace the transmission myself (runs fine just a lot of miles) at a cost of less than 2k, the drive/travel while saving up, and in a few years have the engine rebuilt with a mild rv style cam. 3-4k? Same idea but a different approach. I know mine is fit for that and it wont kill me financially. I want a seriously reliable van that is comfortable too. Your videos are always very informative.

I can understand why some would prefer a permanent high top on their van. But I prefer the pop top style so common on Volkswagen camper vans. I used to own one. When I wanted the top up, for whatever reason, I put it up. But I didn't want a permanent top that would reduce fuel economy and make the van more vulnerable to cross winds. A permanent high top also makes it impossible to use parking structures or garages. I've even seen a few pop tops with solar additions. I should say that although I spent extended, lengthy periods in my pop top camper when I owned it, I never was a full timer. If I became full time, that might change my attitude regarding high tops. I'm anxiously awaiting your next video to see inside.

Bob Wells: Nice video thank you. Were you active in the van craze in the 1970's and 80's? I had a 1973 Dodge Maxi van (The Blue Max) which I converted and had fancy paint. It was a great 7 year run for me. I was a member and , at one time, president of Nor Cal Vans out of the SF/Oakland area. We sponsored and ran the largest van event in the area at King City Calif. Those were fun years for me. Just wondering if you got in on any of that. You would have been in your twenties. I am 81 and have bought a new small trailer which I am modifying to suit my needs (solar, electronics etc.). I have been in South Central Texas for the last 20 years but I am heading west this spring for an extended trip. Maybe I'll run in to you somewhere.

I really like your advice on getting the high top after buying a newer Cargo van. I cannot come close to affording a new van, even without the high top. I'm glad you got what you wanted. I'm sorry for the experience. I'm pretty sure your videos will not help this person's business! Best regards

Bob thanks for your integrity in telling the story---Anyone that is risking life and limb by incorrectly installing needs to be shut down---Imagine that top coming off at 70mph---that fella can not be allowed to do that...If he is doing this shoddy work in complete ignorance you are doing him a favor by getting the word out....possibly saving him from being charged with manslaughter.

Hi Bob, Can you tell me why you chose to go with the Max-Air fan and not the Fan-Tastic Fan? Thanks, I always look forward to you videos. Good Job....

Hi ! just saw your video and decide to subscribe , it was one of the most honest video review of a product or experience that i saw in recent times , you didnt complain, you didnt smash the guy down you didnt whine and put yourself as the victim of a global conspiracy you just tell your story like it was. Be happy , live your life in peace god bless you and be safe !
