The brand-new 6th Series of Mitsubishi’s L200 pickup truck is 40 years in the making and is everything you’d expect from a pickup truck built for European roads - except this latest version feels like much more of a refined package than the previous one.
So we decided to go the extra mile and show off the Warrior, Barbarian AND Barbarian X!
Nearly one in every three pickups bought in the UK is an L200 and the Series 6 is determined to better that. The interiors feel better than ever, the tarmac handling is the best it’s ever been, and the off-road capabilities are staggering.
Now, we’ve been lucky enough to drive this vehicle on all manner of surfaces - tarmac, deep mud, snow, a rally course - and now we get to tell you all about it in its very own Vanarama Roadtest - ain’t life grand?
Before we get started, we just wanted to take a moment to say that we hope you enjoy watching this review, and, if you do, please subscribe to our channel & click the bell to get notified when we post more content just like this.
And don’t forget that if you’re ever in the market for a new van or pickup truck, head to Vanarama.com! Now, with that done… let’s get stuck in!
The new front end of the Series 6 L200 is VERY different from the old Series 5, looking much more like the front of the Outlander SUV than ever - this is deliberate as Mitsubishi looks to bring its pickup trucks in line aesthetically with their cars.
These top 3 trim levels all feature the Dynamic Shield Front Bumper and chrome detailing around the excellent LED headlamps and fog lights
And all have 18" alloy wheels and an alloy spare… so far so similar.
But… there are SOME differences…
• External decals - showing you which one is which…
• Barbarian X is the only one to feature the full 360-degree camera view - and you can tell that because BOTH wing mirrors have the little cameras mounted on them
• Barbarian and X have puddle lamps - very useful in the colder months when it gets darker earlier
• Barbarian X has LED front fog lamps and LED number plate illumination
While the external look and feel are relatively the same, inside is where these derivatives really show their differences.
Some SUVs on the market don’t have luxury interiors like the L200… let’s take a trip through the highlights of each trim level.
WARRIOR
• Auto-dimming rearview mirror
• Cat 1 Thatcham approved alarm
• DAB radio
• Dual-zone air-conditioning
• KOS and push-button start
• Leather steering wheel & gear knob
• Multi-info display - colour
• Privacy glass
• Rear heater duct
• SDA and a rear-view camera
• Silver air vent surroundings
• Super Select 4WD
• Tilt & telescopic steering wheel
• 6 speakers
• Android Auto / Apple CarPlay
BARBARIAN
• Barbarian mat set
• Hill Descent Control
• Illuminated door entry guards
• Leather heated front seats with power driver's seat
• Mood lighting
• Off-road mode
• Rear USB x2
BARBARIAN X
• Auto transmission
• New Barbarian six-pack leather
• Safety Pack includes: Blind Spot Warning, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Ultrasonic Misacceleration Mitigation, Auto High Beam, Corner sensors (front and rear)
• Steering wheel heater
• 360° camera
The loading bay is the same for all 3 models… except that…
BARBARIAN and X
• Spring-assisted tailgate
• Tailgate damper
While there might be a lot of competition out there for the L200, this latest Series builds on the previous in ways we really didn’t expect - it feels like a totally new proposition, and Mitsubishi deserves real credit for creating this excellent vehicle.
So, how do we finish this one…
Well, what’s clear is that Mitsubishi has approached this latest version of the L200 with a much-improved clarity of vision.
This is a European pickup truck, designed to drive on European roads which is capable of driving on dust, mud, tarmac, snow, water, and anything else. And this vehicle CAN do it with what feels like bags of confidence!
What’s most impressive is how it does all the gritty stuff while feeling like your driving an SUV - and at the higher trim levels it feels like you’re sitting in a luxury hotel suite - the views alone justify that comparison.
The one you choose out of these three trim levels will be decided by how much you want to pay per month.
But either way, you’ll be driving an L200 - quite simply one of the best trucks we’ve ever driven.

Interesting review. Here in Australia Mitsubishi stopped calling it a L200 back in the early 90s, they call them Triton now, with the model being from MH to the current MR. We still have the 2.4 Lt motor but no Adblue option. I had a 1987 L200 but now have a Triton 2009 ML in 3.2 turbo diesel and a Triton 2016 MQ in 2.4 turbo diesel on the farm. The older 3.2 motor has better low down torque than the new ones. Love my Tritons for hard farm work in a dusty country 👍

Tom here: Glad you found the review interesting - having all 3 trim levels makes a world of difference for comparing & contrasting them. Hard work in all types of terrains is what the L200s or Tritons were made for. Their platform is tough, engines resilient & they still pack a load of comfort in the cabin. I'm a big fan of these trucks... check out the video of the time we took one to an indoor snow slope: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jnrUhZ55ot1nqLM

Great video! I've been in one of these new L200 at a Mitsubishi dealer and to be brutally honest... I was unimpressed. The plastic was wobbly and just about everywhere in the interior. The interior and exterior design has got some identity issues, the seem generic. My Navara boasts strong character compared to the L200, the interior of my Navara feels and looks better quality than the L200. Sorry for pessimism here but Mitsubishi has fallen down in Belgium, there was a time they rocked the roads with the Shogun/pajero, L200 and the Lancer, but times changed...
@vanaramauk
@vanaramauk 4 жыл бұрын
Tom here: Personally, I think the series 6 L200 is far better and less cobbled together than the series 5. It feels more purpose-built than previous generations. Equally, the newest Navara trucks are a cut above previous generations. Either one is a good choice in my book.

@@vanaramauk By all means yeah! We can agree the previous generation Navara (D40) was a big hassle, I heard a lot of horror stories about reliability issues and chassis snapping in half due to rust! It very pleasant to see Nissan has gotten their acts together with the D23 Navara (the one I drive). The Mitsubishi L200 has been credited for being great value for money by Aussie car reviews. But I would buy an L200 over a Hilux because I don't want to follow the heard of sheep that cling to Hiluxes, Amaroks, and Rangers.

I bought a Barbarian x 4 months ago and not impressed with the overall performance. I find it to be lagging on the engine and the automatic transmission is unresponsive if compared to the ford Ranger I had before. In my personal experience with this truck it seems to have been over-engineered especially on the passive security side, with a range of "safety" features that cannot be excluded even when clearly not needed or even dangerous. also I found the whole security system being inconsistent at its best and completely random at time and the same is for the automatic engine shutdown when the truck stops. I had several trucks but I don't think I will finish the 3 years lease with this one

Inside the vehicle Barbarian X top spec no proper sat nav seats smaller than S5 no tray in cubby box suede seat inserts cheaper seats in S5 not as good which were not as good as the S4 so these will be worse, for durabi;lity tinny noises from rear tub on S6. OOH but it does have Barbarian lighting up in blue on side entry plates beter quality carpets and a tread plate for your left foot would be better so the carpet isnt worn through in 2 years 45K miles would be better sorry but Mitsubishi have lost it, oh and I think it looks like a Wharthog Ugly Ugly Ugly.
