Great review , this new triton is amazing, if you are new to owning a ute , its an attractive proposition, You can turn on awd all the time , so wont have to worry about losing control on wet roads when at low and high speeds You have reliability and a 10 year warranty, something a ranger cannot match

The Chinese utes are terrible , their traction control is terrible , the engines are underpowered, when you go offroad with them , they always underperform compared to a hilux and d max You save money yes but it can't do all the hard core ute things , I don't see the point. Then great wall and mg is not known for reliability and consistency in supplying parts. The triton is available in many different counties meaning parts will be consistent

Great review Brett, probably the best of all the reviewers so far I have seen as you are explaining why things are the way they are. I lol'ed at the VL Commodore refence, why? that also had a NISSAN engine :) . Just on AdBlue, it will probably be an issue when doing extended highway towing as it has been on every Ford Everest. The interior has a lot of common parts with my (T33) X-Trail which of course means Outlander. Nice flat torque curve, look at the chats the torque curve is 1,250rpm wide, also the engine has serious grunt off idle with 300Nm without BOOST, so the gearing is spot on for 4x4 High and Low range, top end is ok for what it is since your are rarely at peak power, that said the toque drop off is actually not a cliff at as 4,000rpm the engine (so 500rpm above peak) is still making 130kw, which is great for engine breaking when towing as the engine has good power band. The big let down to me? suspension and brakes, as for electric steering v hydraulic, they should give the drivers the choice of steering weight control, light for city, heavy for highway and off road but that is my view, shame that Mitshibishi did not develop at least a coil sprung live axle version, hopefully Nissan have retains there's for the upcoming sister vehicle Navara. Overall a big improvement over the last Triton, looking forward to seeing what Pajero Sport will offer and of course the sister vehicle Navara.

I really like this new triton, it seems like a good package. Without a boosted launch, it also seemed to respond well and had very linear acceleration (at least from the video perspective). The 6spd did worry me a bit, but the ratios look just about perfect for this application. The car seems good all-around but the pricing puts it in competition with other class leaders.

Countries have strict emission standards, which limits how much manufacturers can tune their vehicles for power with diesel engines Ad blue reduces pollution , maybe you should argue with your government for their strict emission standards. Also that 3.2 holden you are talking about is much slower than even a bi turbo ranger. Diesel is just a dirty fuel , and the entire world is concerned with climate change. Mitsubishi is complying with the regulations I am pretty sure modders will be able to extract more power with an ecu tune and remap,

I think they are trying hard, it is just that raw performance numbers aren't the main goal. For the Colorado to make the same specific output it would have made 175kw and 550Nm flat from 1500-2750rpm. The Colorado reviews also typically noted it never felt like it made the numbers it did. Back to back comparisons were never that favourable.

It may be true to a degree, but if you’re continue service cost from 5 to 10 years to ensure you keep your warranty, becomes horrendously expensive. Given the huge increase in price over Chinese competitors it’s probably better to go for the base model Ford by turbo and then organise your own service after five years. There is never a good outcome when you are tied to a warranty through servicing.

Eight speed would make a big difference and who are they kidding, they used the six speed because they think they can get away with it and to maximise their profit margin. The L200/Triton was very popular in the UK until Mitsubishi pulled totally out of the European market. We’ve also lost the Navara which was and even more popular pickup. My postman has just bought a recent squared off but well used L200 and my herdsman and my vet have the last of the older rounded shape models.

My son deeply regrets his 2.0 Ranger. Yup it has on paper grunt, but only when nailed to the wall. Day to day driving its power band is that narrow it needs the 10 gears to stay in it. Loved the Ute in every other aspect, but does regret the engine choice (didn’t go the V6 as anyone in the know, knows this engines design flaw in all its version..will never be fixed because it’s a total new block and crank to do it)
@351tgv
@351tgv 9 ай бұрын
the new engine actually has more grunt over a wider torque curve than Ranger 2L sequential turbo, just look at the torque curves. Ranger: 500Nm from 1,750rpm to 2,000rpm Triton: 470Nm from 1,500 to 2,750rpm People make the mistake of seeing what the peak number is then don't look at the curve range As for top end power, ok 154kW is better than 140kw but again look at the rev band, the triton peak is 3,500rpm the Ranger peak is 3,750rpm. That 2L engine is working harder to get more top end power, the Triton is quite relaxed.
@351tgv
@351tgv 9 ай бұрын
oh yeah the torque curve also explains why 6-speed is more than enough, that torque curve is flat and long, no need to short stack gears and then have 3 over-drive ratios, the engine has enough torque to pull top gear at low revs, that said other reviews did mention the transmission does downshift from 6th to 5th on inclines, that has more to do with the final drive ratio (diff ratio) than over-drive gear, also notice the gear shifter (and thank you Mitshibishi for not going to an e-shifter arrangement) does has manual shift more so it would be passible to stay in top gear (6th).
@warcrabcyber9908
@warcrabcyber9908 9 ай бұрын
The old 430nm triton destroys that 500nm bi turbo ranger in a race, this means that the ranger only has more grunt on paper Real world performance does not reflect its numbers, the triton has a mivec variable valve timing engine which makes a world of difference in the real world. Fords rangers are also not reliable. Their engines are on par with gwm in terms of reliability

The triton is still cheaper and has better value. The other thing is that this amarok is based on the ranger meaning it will also inherit all ford reliability issues. Why didn't you use the 8spd? Truthful answer: $$$$$ The Ranger has 10 but the Hilux, BT-50, D-Max etc run 6 spd so it is still competitive in a marketing sense. The 6spd in the MR Triton has about 900rpm between 3-4-5 gears which is way too wide when towing 2.5t or more. Hopefully the wider torque curve fixes the hole you fell into if you didn't rev the MR past 3k. 8spd with the new Tritons 4.09:1 diffs would have given near enough the same top gear final drive, a lower first gear and closer ratios. Maybe when theyrelease the new PS or at the next update we will get the 8spd.

Drum brakes are good enough for stopping at the supermarket -however most utes are woefully under braked for towing which makes them not fit for purpose. The new ranger it the exception with bigger discs up front and vented discs on the rear it's a game changer. Also the 10 speed auto on the ranger does not hunt and makes rowing in hilly terrain a breeze as your always in the right gear. Yes the 10 year warranty is a great promise however for the features it offers the ranger is better value.

@nicktaylor7680 nope the ranger is not better value, the ranger bi turbo is more expensive than a gls triton, the bi turbo ranger has higher specs on paper but in the real world The triton will outperform it and be more reliable , when do you hear about triton crashing from lack of brakes?, you will quicker hear about the engine blowing up in a ford ranger. You don't need an 8 speed or 10 speed transmission in a ute , they are not meant for going that fast, the transmission in the triton is an Aisin transmission So it basically has a hilux transmission and Mitsubishi engine, since aisin is owned by Toyota. This means it will be reliable and powerful . Ford ranger have alot of engine and transmission issues , it's the truck you buy when you listen to reviewers and not owners of the vehicle.

@@warcrabcyber9908 You obviously never done any heavy towing on steep grades and suffers brake fade. There is a reason trucks have 12 speed transmissions. I use duct tape for most of the cars I test. It seems to do the trick. Some have an initial hissy fit but then back off.

The new triton is the ugliest ute I have ever seen. It’s a shame because the old one looked pretty goof

I find the MR looks strange with an alloy tray under the rear doors cause it was made to suit the curved style side tray.
