Vancouver Island Marmots hibernating - Jan 2023

Critically endangered Vancouver Island Marmots are hibernating at the Tony Barrett Mount Washington Marmot Recovery Centre. These marmots are bred in captivity and then released to the wild. The Vancouver Island Marmot is one of the most endangered mammals in the world. In 2003, fewer than 30 of these marmots remained in the wild. Recovery efforts, including this breeding program, have been able to increase the wild population to over 200.
