My family and I were visiting Vancouver from the U.S. - we'd actually arrived in the city that afternoon before the game. And our hotel was right around the corner and down the street a little bit from the Hudson's Bay Company. So, yes, we saw the proverbial manure hit the windmill. Everyone was holed up in their rooms while the hotel security staff made sure everyone/everything was safe. It was weird and scary: a real feeling of "OMG, is this really happening?" But then over the next few days, there were all the people coming downtown to clean up the damage and write messages on the boarded-up windows - it turned into a big block party of sorts, which was awesome.

This was such an embarrassment. The whole world was asking "Why" and I had no clear answer to my international friends and family. It's just chaos and blatantly uncivilized activity. If it happens again, I say we stop doing it in Vancouver, the privilege should be taken away.

Don't get too embarrassed. Not to excuse violence or anything, but the answer is simple, hurt people hurt people. It happens all the time. I'll put it in these terms, for your friends or family overseas, suppose they invested their life savings in something. It fails, they are left with nothing. And now, they are broke, homeless, while everyone they know decides their folly and don't bother to help. Or if your friend were trying to get a date with someone they are stone in love with. Things look promising, they even get a couple dates in, and then find out the person was using them the whole time, cares nothing about them. And now your friend is left heartbroken. In another sense of the word, that is what happened in Vancouver.

As of Jan 24th, 2024, Vancouver's in first overall and Boston's second overall. So it definitely could happen again this year.

It'll be more dependent on if Vancouver loses in the SC Final, not really dependent on who they lose to. It could also happen if they win the Cup. Vancouver has to be smarter after 1994 and 2011.

It could happen again anywhere after a local "big four" pro team wins a championship. It's my understanding that the riot actually began about fifteen minutes BEFORE the game ended (with about eight or nine minutes of playing time left), with Vancouver already down 3-0 in the game.
