I use trowels almost exclusively. I use both straight and curved (and I do have and use a 15" curved). One thing I'd like to point out is that with either a curved or straight trowel you essentially have a 4 or 5 inch knife with the SHORT edge of the trowel. In your example of the butt you tried to do with the curved trowel, that is exactly how I do them with a curved trowel, BUT I then use the end of the trowel like a knife to wipe down the center. You can even spot screws with the end of a trowel. Just something I've never seen you mention. Love your videos.

This is a fun thing I found with my curved trowel. It's concave on the broadside, but the ends are convex and are actually handy for quickly feathering an edge.

My local box stores sell only curved trowels in the drywall section. Flat trowels are in the tile section.

I got a curved trowel, immediately recognized it as better for doing the work than a knife, but also really hated the curve. So I guess it was a learning experience.

Love my curved trowel. Only use it on 1st coat butt joints. Second coat feathers from the high spot. I used to do water damage restoration. So replacing the bottom 24" of drywall left a ton of butt joints. It works wonders on the right project.

I do water and fire restoration work. Curved trowel, some 20 minute and some mesh tape works wonders on those long runs of butt seams on a flood cut.

I've been using curved trowels for over 30 years, and , in their place, they can't be beat. I do a lot of plaster repairs and skimming, where the flat trowels have their place. You really need both -

Your lucky. Up in my neck of CT it seems the painters also do all the taping and compounding. Most I do as a carpenter is putting up the walls so I can hang drywall, which is sad because I have to wait for patch jobs just to touch compound. So sad, because I feel like a good tape job is more art than anything.

OK so I’ve noticed a few things about your videos. If I had to give you a title other than Vancouver carpenter I would say “ mud artist” would fall into your realm. I think I have watched all of your videos if not all most all for sure. I just finished a kitchen where I put new drywall on three walls and the ceiling. I am not a drywall guy, this was my first drywall job in five years. Comparing my work to yours proves what I have already stated, you are an artist. Also along the lines of what you mentioned in this video several times, I hardly ever criticize especially publicly. There’s enough criticism going around right now for the rest of the duration of this world. I focus on positive, and your work is amazing. You have an eye for detail, you are a perfectionist in every sense of the term and you care about your work. It shows in all of your videos. Well I’ve taken your advice and started using a trowel for my drywall, even made the switch at work. Well my boss noticed and said “so your good with a trowel eh?” “I’m getting there” I replied. Well for the last week I’ve been using my trowel skills to install tile floor! My back hurts, my knees are shot and my hands are a mess (mortar is nasty stuff) and I have you to thank, so I yeah, thanks for that! Lol. I guess I’ll be back to mudding before too long! Hello there! I'm actually using curved trowel pretty often and I really like it. So, first of all you using it in wrong way. These are to put on in first layer, right on the paper tape - you can get a surface with beautiful "bump" in the middle, right on the paper tape. For the second layer I'm using 12" or 14" taping knife or even wider flat trowel (one end is sliding right on the "bump" made with curved trowel) - with it I'm putting mud on the both sides of the joint, so in the end you'll have a nice 24"++ junction. Sorry for my English though, I hope all of this is understendable 😅

Well, I think the curved trowel is the best tool for the first coat on butt joints. But only for the first coat. The rest of the work should be done with straight trowel or pan and Knife... This is my opinion...

I'm using a tiling trowel that was gifted to me at the moment because its flat. Bought a trowel and didnt realize they have curved once. Got real fed up with lines everywhere! Swapped back to the 10" tile trowel til I get a proper flat. Yeah, this is my first time and glad to see its not just the lack of experience as to why curved trowels are unsatisfying. I have a “bevelled” trowel too, and I love it! I only use it for butt joints, because it puts about an 1/8” compound/mud over the centre🇨🇦/center🇺🇸 of the butt joint. So you don’t have to use skills to build it up. I never tape with it, let alone doing corners with it. And then afterwords, you just float out ech side with 12” or 14” knife/trowel. I thing to really appreciate it, you have to think of it like a corner trowel! You only use a corner trowel, for corners.

If I may make a recommendation: They sell a mud scoop that is shaped to fit the side of a mud bucket. It is fantastic for scooping every last ounce out of a bucket, and for cleaning up the sides so you can close up a partially full bucket without a bunch of mud stuck to the sides above the line of the mud, which forms chunks. I got mine at Home Depot, but I don't know if you have those up in the Great White North...

No problem; I took a cheap plastic 8" knife, put it on the bucket and traced a cut line with a pencil and cut the curve. I always knew that one day I'd find a use for that thing... You can also just turn a 6" sideways and circle around the walls. We call it "parking the mud". Nothing worse than spreading a bunch of BOOGERS across the joint!

I put the curve in my 12" knife myself. Most of my work is new construction so it's basically filling joints and corners so it works great.

I use a curved trowel for coating up ( hot mud) but i curve them myself from flat and use diffrent depths of curve for joints ( more curve ) and for angle (much less, only very slight curve). You can feather with a curved trowel but you need to be curving them yourself to get them right and you also have to consider the flexibility of the trowel. If you know what your doing it works very well.

As a novice who doesn't do much dry wall, I made my own. I started with an inexpensive Canadian Tire 11X4.5 trowel. I made one long edge concave by 3/16 inch with a grinder and fine sanding disc. When held against the work at an angle it leaves a slight extra bit of mud in the centre.

FYI... cove trowels are best for butt joints. High side of butt covers tape on 1st coat. Then... don't touch high side pull when pulling the low side. Thats 1st coat. 2nd coat goes right down the middle of the 1st coat 2 pulls, w/ a coved trowel. Butt has that mild hump and very little sanding. For smooth wall pull outside 1st coat pulls. Sand & life is good. Also, you put too much mud on the coved trowel when loading a wall. You should be able to feel the wall with the edges of the cove trowel when pulling. Also, let people know that a taper puts the bend in knives when they first buy them and then only ever use that coved side of the knife. The only thing I use hawk & trowel for is applying hand textures. You're a good taper but you put a lot of mud on when coating... understandable when doing smooth walls and it appears thats what you do most of. All that said, one should use a bigger coved trowel for butts too. I'm 40 years in it and like your videos... believe it or not. Obviously I don't learn much but you know what you're talking about and handle yourself well in front of the camera. Last but not least, I've watched tons of You Tube videos where worms are trying to teach people how to tape and coat and they shouldn't post their hideous technics. So... I shred them in the comments. Its good to see a real taper doing videos.

I love my curved trowel. Perfect for first coat tape joints. I don't use it on corners. You're correct, it's not practical for most remodel jobs but it is great when you have a lot of new drywall to finish. You did the tool a disservice by using it on a joint that has already been mudded.

That's why I use knives. I also use a 16" stainless steel pan and I have 18" biceps. That's just for the decorator work. On production jobs it's bazooka and boxes. Good vid though.

After 35 years as a painter flat are for filling first coats round are for feathering 2nd or 3rd coats .......as a painter in Europe we fill Render walls ceilings with 10" inch knives as you American's call them We call them spatulas Plasterers would certainly prefer straight edge trowels for 1st coat👍

They obviously have their place in filling joints (especially flats) or no pros would use them. But... a flat trowel is much more useful as you note. You can't do everything with a curved and there isn't much you can't do with a flat.

It's not wrong to have skills with multiple tools. The curved trowel is nice to do just main seems (although I don't have one). When I float walls for tile I use multiple trowels for different applications. Anywhere from 10" to 18", plus the one tool everyone should have, a Marshalltown 6" margin trowel.

As I've been told, if you want good trowels, you can't buy from a hardware store or home depot or anything. You're best off going to a drywall specialty store. Apparently one near me sells German steel trowels for similar to home depot's marshalltowns

I use a curved trowel on the first coat after taping. Then I use it as a small hawk. Also its only curved if you hold it with the surface parallel to the wall. If you hold it perpendicular to the wall it would be flat on the wall. I think its fine and easier than knifes in the early stages. But im no pro so I dont usually care about how long it takes.

I just bought one the other day in a desperate gambit to improve butt joints in my kitchen remodel. I need more practice but it seems to be solving a problem I have on the first coat getting the right thickness of mud over the tape on the first coat. Use the curved to wipe once (hopefully) and have a straight blade ready to feather and leave those "Vancouver Carpenter" lift-off lines (haha).

I like a curved trowel for one thing only, a flat joint (vs filling factory tapered edges) . You need a layer of mud over the tape and with a flat trowel of knife, is is hard to get a consistent depth. I concentrate on getting a layer on and try not put the mud on the full width because as you point out, its hard to feather. If I do have to feather then I use a flat knife and just pull the material back out. Depending on how wide I can go to hide the inevitable speed bump of a flat joint over butt ends, I sometimes take a 2nd pass on each side with the curved trowel again concentrating on getting the center full depth, the the curved trowel gets put aside to collect dust again until the similar situation.

One of those Canadians who love curved trowels here. I’m mostly in new construction. That Richards one you have tho are absolutely terrible. They are way to stiff and never work in. Trowels are just like any tool, get what you pay for. 18-20 000 bd ft houses there is usually no need to cross in the same day. But even then doesn’t have to completely dry just set up.

for a first time taper side to side on a butt joint and let I dry then use your flat trowel down the centre is the same thing as using machine tools like a 10inch flat box side to side and then a 12inch box down the centre.

Curved trowel would be kinda nice for floating floors. But I still use flat trowel, sometimes even use the rounded end trowels Also good on this guy. Im not much of a drinker either and I personally think its a problem if you are drinking every night or even every weekend.

I use a straight knife that way I can put as much mud as I want . I'm in Texas, hard to find a good straight knife with out the corners being bent. But when you do I buy a few. I use a 5" up to a 14" knife. Your videos are good. Notice you don't have a helper either.

A few years ago I drywalled my basement room, about half of it.
