Great videos as always! My favorite corner tool is a small scraper which can be used to create perfect corners. Some sponges begin to lose their material which can leave some imperfections.

Requested topic for future video...when I have to touch up divets or holes after smooth floating a wall, then sand the areas, they always show. Meaning I can't get the surface uniform. This is even using finish mud from the same mix batch. It's like the two areas are different hardness and don't sand down the same. Visible using a light and then also show after priming with PVA drywall primer.

My boy who is a very good novice finisher just showed me a norman sander. Didn't havd a pole but worked well with hand tape work. As finisher I would never use corner Sanders. I only use sponges like you.

normally i start of with a 36 grit and sometimes i have to use a chisel and hammer to get the big gobs off after that i work my way down the grits to 2000 grit inspect it with my magnifing glass and move on sometimes it takes me all day to do 4 corners ...👍👍

You can’t get into corners or apply direct pressure. As a result I have to do way more detail sanding.

Thanks for all the videos! My quality of work has GREATLY increased because of it - indespendible for a new homeowner!. One issue I seem to run into...on drywall seams (factory edge to factory edge), on the initial taping pass, I put on the mud, then the tape - like usual. Upon removing the excess mud from under the tape (by pushing hard with the blade), I end up gouging/harming the high lip on the factory edge of the drywall (about 2" or so back from the edge). I'm getting away with it by covering the gouges with a much wider mud pass on the factory seam during a second coat. (treating it like a butt joint)...but I'm wondering if there is a better way. I don't see how to get around this, as I have to apply pressure to remove the excess mud under the tape. Currently using a 6" blade to put on the mud, as well as take excess out from under the tape. Maybe the solution is to use a 4" blade and very carefully stay between the lips on the factory edge? This seems tedious. Might be a good video...

Sounds like your mud is waaaaaay too thick and maybe your knife is too new. You also might have your blade on way too steep an angle, again probably because your mud is too thick.

Wow, saw the drywall attached to the wall "vertically" so no more butt joint! Good to see this as I have been wondering why most people are NOT doing this but rather add a big area of butt joint to be mud/sand. It is not like drywall would give the wall too much shear strength.

It does give it a lot of strength, but it's not usually needed. The main reason is that's almost impossible to make the seam disappear. Look how wide the joints are feathered on large walls and they would almost be touching on 4'. That's also why the joints are staggered so you don't see one seam going floor to ceiling. If vertical was the best method the pros would be doing it. When you do it all day you try to find the easiest way to do it and get the best results and that's not it.

So as a finisher I prefer running long flat joints at 4-5ft. I dont knock vertical but would rather run a few butt joints as a finisher.

So the builder I picked them because a friend of mine was a subcontractor for them and I’ve actually worked with him for them through him so they were known for doing good work and he’s a buddies the one who told me about how they do the flashlight test on walls are done to see any imperfections

Always useful. Wonder if you have any tips to maintaining those sponges. Wash them out? I use rubber to clean my sand paper for wood working.

I have a question for you. Can you please explain the difference between piece work and hourly work. I think there is something deep between these two terms. It always rings in my mind how my boss can manage picking us from home to job site inclueding expences like gas and personal expences from doing hourly work bcz i am not making a lot from work and i am doing live 50 to 60 hours a week finishing(taping, sanding, applying3coats, final sanding) in 12 to 14 units a week. I think some here doesn't seems quite as it looks from outside. Help

Was that inside corner sander an a sanding poll ? ....where did you find that all wall tools? , all I have around my area is CB wholesale and GTS drywall and I have never seen that on a sanding poll , just a triangle corse sanding sponge is all I can find that you grip with your hand please tell me where to find that

For a guy that does drywall on a regular basis, you really ought to move on to an electric sander with a dust extractor. I went from sanding 20,000 sq ft at a time with a mere pole sander, then sponge with a light, and feeling like my arms just ran a marathon. With an electric I can do that in half the time and way less effort. Plus with an electric it leaves no scratches with the sander I use and really minimizes light checks and waaay less dust at the end of the job.

Hey Ben, you recommended this sander a few years ago, and I've had great luck with it on my larger jobs since. Do you also find that those hooks badly tear the back of the sponge? Sometimes I'll find that it only lasts a room or two before I have to re-hook it. Do you have this issue too, or am I being *way* to aggressive with my corners? As always, great vid!

I haven’t used this one much but it held up fine. You might be being too aggressive. Try not to bump it or use too much pressure and it should hold up longer.

Question: On jobs like that that span a large area, have you ever used a dust collector? Harb## Freig## here in Georgia sells one that I've considered buying for this very reason (and there are YT videos on how to enhance it so it collects more and more efficiently). I wonder how much that would cut down on fine dust getting on everything, everywhere.

I've found it doesnt do the best job regardless and it makes the sanding more cumbersome. If you have anything to cover just make a barrier I use tarps to reduce waste from plastic

You should invest in a respirator if you're concerned the cartridges usually are good for 6 months if kept in dry conditions but yea n95 is all any of us use if anything

Mudding is a skill of experience. I've done it more times than I can count as a diy and it's no where near a professional. It's one of those trades where you get what you pay for.

I started to do the family room bathroom full-size bathroom I’m that room so my girlfriend bought a 5 gallon bear paint and primer then a gallon of a darker gray paint and primer bear I have somebody that I knew for a long time are used door painter a new Glidden I tried it I’m like 1011 years ago a friend of mine had some rental properties he said get some cheap paint he wanted me to spray it and Roll and cut the semi gloss oh my god that Glidden speedball was really terrible like I didn’t have no problem spraying it but when I was trying to roll and cut it in and it was just really watery running down my hand and I was like I’ll never use that ever again then a friend of mine was telling me because he dues does rental properties so he’s not trying to get expensive paint he said they change their formula word don’t do that anymore

They make those 3m sanding sponges now with the top corner rounded so you don't have to cut it.
