You said exactly what I wanted to say H...bN! How lucky we are to have access to the wisdom and experience of this grower (via the wonderful KZbin) with her common-sense approach, gentleness and humility. I would never have thought it was possible for me to successfully grow Vandas - my top favorite orchids - in my small northern California apartment without her very valuable input. Thank you so much to the wonderful lady at Bumblebee's Orchids!! I can't wait to watch all of her Vanda-related videos!

Thank you for your video on vanda care! I followed your way, by soaking vanda roots gradually for few hours then eventually overnight per week (with mix of fertilizer). And my vanda has been growing lots of roots for the last 3 months since I have it at home. Today I noticed that it is developing basal keiki 😍 cant wait for it to make another flower spike

Great video, very informative has really help me. I grow my vandas I have 3 all together, my climate is very dry and hot in summer and a very mild winter I live in Athens Greece. I bought me vandas from schwerters about 2 years ago, I tried growing them bare rooted but tooooo much work trying to keep them hydrated, then in glass vases that didnt do much either, and about a month ago i saw that yours are potted in plastic containers with very large bark chips so now I am growing that way, well it hasnt been too long but i already see a difference. I love this video, and once again thanks for sharing. Have a great day.

Thanks for the great vanda care summary. You are the single one person who made me try my first Pachara Delight! And then more vandas made their way in my grow space! And I follow your watering regime of soaking overnight for the more mature vandas. It definitely works! Just about everything you say about watering, fertilizing, misting, dealing with infections I agree with. Certainly success can be assessed by knowing who provides the healthiest stocks of orchids. It's difficult here in Canada where there are few orchid shows, at least in my part of the country and I'm very dependent on online vendors. But as you are experiencing a space crunch due to too much success, same thing here as the vandas get taller and wider with unruly roots, it becomes a bit harder to manage. I'm still in the hunt for some scented vandas and perhaps the trend towards tesselatta and Bangkok sunset hybrids will make that possible. Happy growing!

Great video! I grown my vanda's in a simular way (oct-may). I have them in large glass vases and fill the vases on saturdays with fertilized water. On sunday I dunk all the water out. The rest if the week they are kept dry. But in summer I do bring them back outside because they take over my windowsill inside ;)

Lots of good info on vandas. Do you have a night drop in temperature and if so how would it work in the winter with window vents pouring out the heat? A reply much appreciated.
@ResQuetzal
@ResQuetzal 5 жыл бұрын
@@lorettacabral4196 I don't think you're directing the comment to me but I'll answer. There is always a temperature differential from day and night even for Vandas. It just doesn't get much below the low 60s F. Coerulea tolerates a bit cooler, but you would have to be prudent.

Sorry for replying so late and thank you so much for your encouraging words. I'm glad your Vandas are bringing you joy, they're very beautiful. Concerning space: I could just buy less or sell more (which I try as you'll see in my next video in case you're interested). :D But the Vandas are growing like weeds, indeed (like you said, unruly roots, tall growth etc.). V. tessellata and V. denisoniana are my favourites concerning scent. Happy growing! :)

I don't know if you will see this message or not, but I am an organic gardener from the US and I have been able to manage my orchids organically. I totally agree that chemical fungicide is horrible and should never be used. However, there are many options available that are easy to use and are at least as effective as the chemicals. Monterey Disease Control is my current favorite. But, there are other remedies that you can mix yourself. The reason I like the new Monterey product is that it has zero negative effects on the plants. Organic remedies often surprise you by working much better than chemicals!

Joseph, thank you so much for your kind and encouraging words! :D There's winter care before we turn on the heating (-> little light, low temperatures, little watering) and after (-> 4 hours added grow light for some, higher temperatures again (about 23°C), a little more watering again, but still less than in summer time, because the plants grow less in total). Since I don't have a strict schedule, I just water off the top of my head. Pacharas are so showy when in bloom. Happy growing! :)

Im puting it in a jar with some water and mist it in the morning. And i come back home at 7 pm and take it out and its without water at night. Im afraid of loosing roots, and afraid to keep it dry all day... dont know what to do. I have a desire to pot it in plastic with bark... Your voice is very nice)

Thank you! It's difficult to tell without seeing the plant. It might loose roots because it's in a state of transition. Vandas tend to loose some old, mostly thin roots when they are getting used to a new environment. I wouldn't worry too much if there are no signs of infections, but keep a close eye on it. Watering for 10 hours (or so) each day sounds a bit much, though. I'll keep my fingers crossed. Happy growing! :)

Thanks for this video! It's strange though: you live in central europe, i assume then your climate is a bit colder than mine (I live in central Italy). So far I have watched videos saying that vandas need watering almost once a day, which is what I have done , with little success though as its roots seem dry, perhaps because my house is pretty dry indeed. I have soaked it so far but I am afraid some water went on the axes and that was not good. Watering once a week, in Europe, seems little to me...no doubt it's working though as yours look gorgeous! Congratulations!
@bumblebeesorchids3408
@bumblebeesorchids3408 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Maria. My climate is a bit colder and slightly more humid than yours for sure. It depends on various factors. My bigger Vandas with their extensive root systems can hold very much water. I imagine that Vandas can lose much moisture via the leaves in hot and dry environments, though. It all comes down to try and error. What works for me might not work for you and the other way around. I’ll keep my fingers crossed that you will find a watering routine that suits your and your Vandas’ needs. Happy growing and stay safe. 🌺🌿

Hi Christina, sorry for replying so late. I guess both is possible depending on your watering habits. There's less air movement in a vase compared to a setup without a vase. This has to be kept in mind to prevent the roots from rotting. Happy growing! :)

Awesome video! Thankyou! Both mine were rescues from a sale rack in home base. They were nearly rootless and both had to have the bottom 3-4 sets of leaves and base of stems cut off due to infections i couldn't see before i got them home. Both grew new root systems this summer, and one has a spike forming!!! Both are hung in my S facing window in baskets, but open roots, with a tiny bit of sphag so when they're watered it keeps the hydration going a little longer!! Btw, can you make an app for android phones please!!!!!!

I'm not sure if I keep missing it, but how often do you fertilize your vanda's? Or do you have fertilizer in the water every time you soak them?
@bumblebeesorchids3408
@bumblebeesorchids3408 2 жыл бұрын
I am not sure if I mentioned it. I fertilise most of the time (medium concentration). Sometimes I use more fertiliser, sometimes I just use plain RO water. To sum it up: I don’t have a elaborated fertilising regime. 🙈

Hi Itoh! I don’t use any additional lighting for my Vandas at my southern windowsills. But additional lighting could help especially during the winter months. I’ll keep my fingers crossed your Vandas will bloom soon. 🍀🌱

I received a Vanda last week. It is in A plastic pot with orchid mix. It is dehydrated, so I am watering every three days & misting twice a day.. how long does it take for the roots to be hydrated? I would like to succeed. It is in a South window like my collection. How often should I water.?

Thank you, Misslou! :) I'd have to check my notes, because don't remember the details from the top of my head. But I remember cinnamon, a copper fungicide and seiling the spots with nailpolish and those methods didn't really work. But the infection never assumed alarming proportions.

Hi Hamin, it depends on your personal schedule. My point is: As long as your plants get enough hydration and perform well everything is fine no matter how often or long you soak. Happy growing!
