Weird Borders: State Borders of the United States of America

Ever wondered why Michigan has two pieces? How about why Alaska isn't connected to the rest of the United States?
The state borders are a lot weirder than they first appear, and often simple river borders will have crazy zig-zags that seem to arbitrarily cross the river.
When rivers shape, borders don't, leaving states with strange pieces on the wrong side of the river.
Some states like Oklahoma and West Virgina have bizarre panhandles, and Kentucky even has a part cut off my Missouri. Its a strange border situation called an exclave, which is when a part of a the state is only reachable by land through other states or countries.
Virginia also has the eastern shore which is strangley is on the other side of the Chesapeake bay.
Other bizarre borders include New York and New Jersey, where Liberty island and Ellis island are weirdly part of New York but are surrounded by New Jersey waters. Even stranger is that New York only owns a small peice of ellis island. The island was expanded, but the new land was over New Jersey borders, so it stayed new jersey. Leaving New York with a bizzare enclave on an new jersey island.
Another weird border is that Delaware has some land on New Jersey's side of the Delaware river. This strange situation is because inside Delaware's 12 mile circle, the border is the high water mark of the river, so when the river was filled in the new land became Delaware.

When Johnny Comes Marching Home - Civil War Song
America the Beautiful - 'Murica

I had to leave a lot out of the video as it was already getting long. The video was quickly became a history of all the US state borders. Which may be interesting, but there is enough information there to fill an entire television series. So I decided to concentrate only on the exclaves and could only do some of the panhandles. My source for this video is this document made by the US geological survey: pubs.usgs.gov/bul/1212/report.pdf There is a lot of info there if you are curious. Thanks to reddit user /u/MrDowntown for linking me that pdf. Speaking of reddit, if you don't like youtube comments, you can discuss the videos in the subreddit: www.reddit.com/r/VanDeGraph/ My video editor seems to have glitches for videos longer than 5 minutes so the end of the video might be a bit weird. I'm looking in to getting professional video editing software.

@@yeeyee8928 there were attempts back in the 19th century and again in the mid-20th century, but it didn't work out. I don't expect it to happen in the near future either because Delaware and Maryland are blue stronghold states but the part of Maryland that would be ceded to Delaware would make it a red stronghold and would inhibit Maryland's gerrymandering efforts. Virginia would also be upset now that they have a slightly red leaning administration. Loosing 2 of their reliably red counties wouldn't be pleasant for them.

@Spaztar 5 жыл бұрын
It's not that he is literally speaking too fast, it's more that the rhythm of his speech follows the exact same pattern throughout the entire video. It makes it harder to get a grasp on what he's talking about at a given moment, which means you're constantly trying to keep up. When you're doing public speaking, it's your job to direct the listener's attention, it's not the listener's job to constantly be scrambling to keep up. It's like paragraphs when you're writing. Breaking up text into concise sections makes it easier to follow. The same applies for cadence of speech. Breaking up speech into distinct pauses and intonations indicates to the listener what points the speaker thinks are important, and when the speaker is switching from one subject to another. With him, his speech is the equivalent to a giant run-on sentence. Because the speech pattern is repetitive, there's no sense of flow to what he's saying, so there's nothing there to guide the listener. Surely you've encountered a WALL OF TEXT somewhere online, and been like "Jesus, there's no way I'm reading that, I can't follow it." Same concept here.

That's weird about states having territory on the "wrong" sides of rivers - I had noticed that on my state's (Arkansas) eastern border with Mississippi. I've always loved maps and I used to see that and wonder why in the heck it was like that. Meandering rivers like the Mississippi, oxbow lakes, the geological processes behind them, and such are extremely interesting to me.

I and many Texans (and New Mexicans) don't mispronounce Rio Grande as 'REE-oh Grand,' but rather say 'REE-oh GRAHND-ay', as in Spanish. It would be like saying that the 'correct' pronunciation of tortilla is not as it is in Spanish but as it /appears/ in English - but... No one says 'tor-TILL-uh' except Yankees who may never have eaten one. I could go on.

a wee note about Indonesia: school history textbooks claim here that Indonesia had claimed all of the Dutch East Indies when they proclaimed independence (i.e. including Dutch New Guinea), and that the results of the 1949 conference that ended in NL seceding Indonesia (apart from New Guinea) implied that Indonesia would suddenly get it (thus justifying the things that included the Indonesian invasion of NL new guinea). And a decent number of people seem to believe that East Timor joined because they wanted to (this would be during Suharto's regime - during whichpeople were made to think that being outside during a solar eclipse would be lethal (students aside - at least they knew better) ) Can't find another source for that on the Internet though. Do take what I wrote with a grain of salt, I guess?

Which is total b s .Maryland gave a LOT of soldiers and horses to the south . plus their coastline hid a lot of southern blockade runners . maybe Yankee revisionists should tell the truth ? They might have more credibility that way . my ancestors served the south in that war and I'm quite familiar with it . including the Yankee pow camp called " the andersonville of the north " camp Douglas Illinois. One of my ancestors was captured when Vicksburg fell and was imprisoned there . there is a book out called " to die in Chicago " maybe you should read it . that is unless you want to keep on being laughed at . I know . its hard to admit you're wrong after all the Yankee lies you've been told all these years. This was so brilliantly done that I had to subscribe! Thanks for these tantalizing little tid-bits of U.S. state and international border history. I always wondered what it would be like to live in that little piece of the USA totally surrounded by Canada, although I think someone already did a story on TV about the school bus that has to pass customs every day to get kids back and forth to U.S. Schools. I didn't know about that place in Iowa that is in Nebraska, (if you know what I mean)... will have to talk to my Iowa relatives about that and see how they feel about it. But yes, this was fun to watch, well-narrated, and I'll have to watch and look again so I can see all those fine points. Best wishes, and yes, I subscribed.

One detail you missed about Maryland's many weird border anomalies is that, at one point, the Mason-Dixon Line was (I think) 12-15 miles north of where the current line that defines the border between Pennsylvania and Maryland, but for some arcane reason once known to me but now lost to memory, it was negotiated to have that border drawn further south to what it is now.

Fun one for me: Chicago was almost in Wisconsin. Just like Ohio, the northern border of Illinois was originally meant to be a line drawn due west from the southernmost tip of Lake Michigan to the Mississippi River. However, when time came to petition for statehood, it was found that the Illinois Territory didn't have enough citizens to qualify under the legislation of the time, so they simply moved the border further north. So Wisconsin got screwed out of Chicago and the UP. Take that, Cheesheads!

Great to hear all these complicated histories! I always wondered if da UP became part of Michigan just to make sure the Brits didn't grab it by attaching it to the more settled mitten-land. Good on ya for saying "Rio Grande" in the Spanish way, but everyone in Oregon says "Orragun". (accent on the first.) You could just say the Pig War happened on San Juan Island, (indeed the biggest of the group in the Salish Sea) Another episode might cover why so many places in the Salish Sea have Spanish names and another on how the Salish Sea got it's name (rather recently)
