Bruneian here, a little update on the part about the divided Brunei, just this year (March if i'm not mistaken), Brunei finally opened the longest bridge in Southeast Asia which connects the larger portion with the smaller district of Temburong. This bridge was already finished since late last year and there was suppose to be a major grand opening event possibly with a ribbon of sorts on mid-2020 if i'm not wrong but when Covid came around, the bridge was opened for ease of travel so that Bruneians don't have to cut through Limbang (Malaysia) just to get to the 'mainland' and this was even before Brunei and Malaysia closed their borders due to the pandemic. Fun/Sad Fact: the last time travel from one side to the other didn't involve crossing foreign land was in 1890 when that middle part (Limbang district) was ceded to Sarawak and in Bruneian history, Brunei lost a lot of territories actually, we don't care that Brunei lost territories/influence in the Filipino archipelago to the Spanish, we don't care Brunei lost West Coast North Borneo to the North Borneo Company and we don't care Brunei lost the entirety of Sarawak to the Brookes but damn Europeans why you gotta take Limbang and Labuan tho :(

So about the Dutch and French border, there are a couple of things you missed out on which also explains the situation a little more. The border is technically not with the country of the Netherlands but just with the Kingdom of the Netherlands which the country of the Netherlands is also part of but also a couple other nations. This also explains why Saint maarten (the Dutch one) isn't part of Europe, since this is an independent island state only being part of the monarchy. Hence their use of a different coin and the extra border patrol.

This is a full-scale golfcource located right at the Finnish Swedish border close to the cities Tornio and Haparanda. Eleven holes are located in Sweden and seven in Finland. Thanks to different time zones the world's longest HOLE IN ONE is a possibility on hole 6. The shot will take about one hour and 5 seconds as National border runs across the putting green. The sun shines 24 hours a day in mid-summer, which allows unlimited golfing.

Fun fact: the zigzag pattern of Märket was a good solution for both countries because it provided a legal loophole that made it possible to change the borders without changing either country’s constitution, which would have been a real headache. The Finnish constitution states that the ”Finnish realm” e.g. the territory of the Republic of Finland can’t be increased or decreased by other than natural phenomena (post glacial rebound). Since the surface area stayed the same, it was an easy solution.

For Saint Martin, France included many of its territories within its nation, so French Guiana is actually part of France and not a separate country - hence France's largest land border is with Brazil and not a European nation. The Netherlands however considered its overseas territories as separate nations, colonies, dependencies...take your pick.

I'm glad that you mentioned us La Hispaniola and you handled it pretty good. I would like to add something though: although we, Dominican Republic, might be "10x richer than Haiti" remember we're still a underdeveloped country, with most areas being very poor, some very so that no one from a first world country could even imagine. So yeah, our hatian brothers have it much worse unfortunately, and compared to them this sounds like a rich country, but we're not... At all.
@natekite75323 ай бұрын
I remember watching his video on Haiti vs the Dominican republic and being shocked at him saying that the Dominican side was rich. I've been to that country... I helped pour concrete floors for people so that they wouldn't get diseases from sleeping in the dirt. I guess if Dominica is considered "rich" then that should really be an eye opener for how underdeveloped most of the world really is. Though, I wonder if wealth is just spread unevenly? I've heard that the country has tons of luxury resorts and wouldn't be surprised if there are isolated pockets of tourist money surrounded by poverty. Would make the country look rich on paper but not in practice.

While the island Kataja was only mentioned briefly, it isn't alone in the area as there are at least 2 others nearby that are divided by the Sweden-Finland border. Although some of said islands being divided by a border might not be because of human error or poor maps. The region where the islands are located is slowly (about 1cm/year) rising up out of the sea, and when the borders were drawn it is possible that the parts of the islands that are now in Finland were under water. But since that was about 200 years ago; there will have been changes in the coastlines and the shape of the islands in the area.

Both the French and the Dutch side are part of the EU, just differently. The French side is an EU OT (integral part of France) and the Dutch side is an EU OCT (autonomous country with no direct Dutch nor EU control on internal affairs, same EU status as Greenland or the Isle of Man). There are no border checks between the French and Dutch sides on St. Maarten, ... mostly. A border check was introduced for a while to minimize the spread of Covid-19, but I believe the border has been open again since September. The way in which St. Maarten can have this border open is by essentially making you enter both countries when coming into the island from either side. So you'll have both Dutch and French border officials at the airports, ferry ports, etc, checking you in into both countries, which I think is a more interesting and actually true fact. And even though each side has its respective currency, in practice they use the US dollar.
@wojtekpolska10134 ай бұрын
5:58 what? Netherlands is definitely in the EU and Shengen Area, and they use the Euro ever since it was introduced. the Dutch Guilder ceased to exist two decades ago the statement that there are border checkpoints is also completely false, the border is legally open and free to cross with no checkpoints required. im honestly surprised how you could so confidently make such erroneous statement. If you go to this island, you can freely move about the entire island without having to go to any border checkpoint, and Euro is the official currency of both parts of the island.
