The first pancake is the test pancake. It gives you an idea whether the heat or mix needs to be adjusted.

Here's something wild: A cooking tip! ;-) If you pan-fry something of which you're not sure if it's too thick and it may end half-cooked in the middle, just pop a lid over the pan - anything that stops the hot air from inside of the pan escaping will do (pot lids and ikea-plates are tested here, though for the latter you'll want gloves). That way you get a kind of oven-effect and your pancake would have been properly done for sure.

David, youmay (or may not) recall from the Canal Boating channel that I am an ex-pat Brit now living in Texas. My wife and I have this summer just finished restoring a 1995 Starcraft popup camper. She is off at her ladies clubs events (is a member of a ladies only camper group called "sisters on the fly") so your remark about anything bigger than a van being huge, rings very true for me. One of those Motor Coach homes (we call them Class "A" coaches) will do nicely for me but at $150,000+ and up to the sky is the limit for one new, are a bit on the expensive side for me.

Great vlog, thank you for taking us along! If you'll accept a couple pancake tips from an American, yes thin your batter, and use less oil. In a non-stick pan, or properly seasoned cast iron, if you drizzle some oil in and then wipe it out gently with a paper towel, what's left is plenty, and makes for much more even browning of the pancake. When you need more oil, just re-wipe the pan with your oiled paper towel.

As an American, let me say that you can get pancakes of all descriptions here. I'd have thinned those out a great deal (not quite a crèpe but at least half of what you showed us). For one thing, it makes for a more golden pancake because it bubbles much sooner. Another tip: add a bit of cinnamon to almost any boxed/bagged mix to freshen the taste! I enjoyed the show. Thank you!

The pancake batter should be lumpy. If you stirred it so much that it's smooth, the resulting pancake will be tough. Also, the traditional way of determining the proper temperature of the griddle is to sprinkle water on the surface - water should sizzle and roll around on the surface.

A very nice experience, not glutted with crowds of people. Previous to this, the only thing I knew about Brit camping was as presented by Clarkson, May and Hammond. Americans are not concerned about the taste or texture of pancakes, but rather the size of the hotcakes. Supersize 'em, thank you.

Nice vlog David. That looked like a lot of ground to cover. For your pancakes, add three tablespoons or soup spoons of dark ale to the mix. It will give you a bit thinner mix which will spread thinner in the pan and add a sponge cake texture to the cake. The dark ale adds a bit of caramel flavor. Have a great week.

Your foray into making American-style pancakes proved to be the most riveting part of the outing, at least in my mind. YES, your pancake looked EXACTLY as high as it should be. Late in life, I learned that pancakes are baked more than pan-fried. Lower heat and longer stovetop time work a treat. If you really want a crepe to roll up with some filling, thinner mix (and maybe even a different batter recipe) will be needed. Americans often put a pat of good butter on the hot cake along with the syrup. I sometimes coarsely grate a raw apple into the batter for easing my conscience by adding nutrition.😊

In the US the Campers are classed A, B, and C Class A is that large Coach with the slide-outs, they run upwards from $200,000 (there is a TV show about just those sort of vehicles built for Musicians and retired millionaires who get seasick.) Class B is like yours; a van fitted out as a camper. Class C is a Cab and Chassis, with what you would call a caravan fitted to the frame to make a single vehicle. (it sounds awful but it makes for a roomy camper and maintains a good maneuverability)
