So true. Also very appreciative. I developed a rare disease late in my life few years back and apparently it made me so free and open that i was the most social, made my most friends, got my biggest recognition at work and met my wife. Really changed my whole outlook on life. Lol n Like they said here i can always use it to feel ok about prioritizing myself when needed when i used to feel pretty guilty or not allowed.

Only conan can carry a conversation this heavy and still make you cry and laugh at the same time. The swirl of emotions is unending. I could listen to conan everyday, all day long and i would not get tired of it. Somehow the art of conversing with people is now lost. Very few people can hold a conversation for more than 10 minutes without getting distracted or falling off topic.

She shows up in other projects and always steals the show. From lonely island to I think you should leave and even What We Do in the shadows. It’s that she comes off unassuming at first and then just is extra ridiculous.

I totally got this when I was listening. I had stage one lung cancer 6 years ago and before they removed the mass, I had to have biopsies and PET scans and whatnot. I was 45 and got more attention than I’d ever had in my whole life, something I didn’t really care for. I would make awful jokes and use it to get out of things. I’d stand in the middle of a dirty kitchen and grab my chest and say OW OW OW and when my family would look up, I’d look pitiful and say “my tumor is acting up again”. I called it “tumor humor” but I was usually the only person that thought it was funny. I’m fine now and my family tells stories about me doing these things and roll their eyes.

One of my younger sisters had leukemia when we were kids, and I wasn't old enough to understand the seriousness of the situation, but I was old enough to recognize the perks: my family would get great seats at the local minor league baseball games, we'd get to go to cool events, and I'd get to stay with my grandparents/aunts and uncles more than usual. Now, as an adult, I sometimes think "I bet that was pretty stressful for my parents."

My sister needed glasses. So ofcourse I wanted glasses,too. I wanted the attention she got. I sometimes would put them on and say:'I see much better!" A lie, ofcourse. And my parents knew it, too.😄 But when I turned 10 my eyesight was actually starting to deteriorate. My parents didn't believe me at first when I started squinting to read the subtitles. In class, I had to get up and walk up to the blackboard to see what was on it and my teacher urged me to have my parents take me for an eye-test. We finally went to the GP and did an eyetest. The doctor said I needed glasses. When we were outside, my mom goes; 'you were just faking it, those were very mild subscriptions'. Turns out my prescription was much higher than my sister's and i had worse eyesight. I'm like 'the boy who cried wolf'🤪 Well...the wolf came and slapped me with -3.5. My mom: "that's what you get when you pretend"! I am now down to a -7.5 prescription🤣

Only Conan could hear a story about someone having cancer as a kid/teen and go “well I can relate to that feeling, I once BROKE MY ARM” I get he bookends it with (that isn’t cancer that’s just a broken arm) but the fact it popped up in your head and you felt the need to share it kind of says everything. It’s a little bit indicative of the type of person who thinks they’re a good listener when in reality they ALWAYS respond to peoples stories with a story or anecdote about himself. I get that your experiences are all you have, but when someone’s telling you about their cancer I think you really shouldn’t bring up your own thing unless it’s like about you or a family member having cancer. Relating to someone is trying to imagine what it’s like being in their shoes and admitting you don’t know what it’s like. I feel like Conan always feels the need to show that he can relate his life to the thing at hand somehow, but that isn’t really putting yourself in someone else’s shoes that’s taking them and putting them in YOUR shoes.
@MCraft-pt9nf
@MCraft-pt9nf 2 жыл бұрын
I can see why you think it is inappropriate. However, while I am not a doctor, I believe Conan has some form of ADHD. I have it myself and I do the exact thing with the anecdotes. It isn't a selfish thing. Non-NTs (especially with folks with ADHD and ASD) just have trouble relating to others so to show they are listening or appreciate the person it's very easy to think "oh I should share my story too so they know I understand". Yes. It is annoying but it isn't a sign they are being inconsiderate. Then again, I'm only speculating. I don't know the guy personally, but you might know someone in your life who also behaves similarly and it might be an explanation.

You are right in general, but I don't know about this one. Conan was responding to her saying being a kid and seeing someone in a cast with a broken leg and wanting to be them. And definitely not relating to her condition. He ends with it too.

@@MCraft-pt9nf I think John's reply may have been to Hexted's comment.

I thought that too. But it is his show and as other comments note, I’m not sure he can help it.

@@MCraft-pt9nf yup. I'm the same. Had a late ADHD diagnosis. It is very annoying and it took me a while to figure out how bad it was. Thing is; I relate to a lot of people and me-interrupting and talking about MY experiences, is not me wanting to be all like 'look at meeee'. It's my inept way of letting you know how MUCH I am feeling you and desperately want to let you know that. But then I end up going on a tangent about myself, completely forgetting that you were the one talking... comes across as being sooo egotistical and very annoying. And I don't always pick up peoples' ques. So I come off as anti-social. Which I'm not.its like I need more time to process information because my mind is racing all the time and I feel rushed and just blurt out the first thing that comes to mind and off I go. I have a friend who is very good at silently letting me know I'm going on a tangent without making me feel as if I did something wrong on purpose. It's the ADHD. But she also silently let's me know:"Just because you have ADHD doesn't mean you can't adjust your behaviour; let me finish my story!" There should be a guide book 'how to respond and behave like a 'normal' person'. I observe how people behave and copy the behaviour but, I don't always get it right...most of the time.
