If you are looking for a gentler , slower and sadder version of this song, check out the Joshua Bell version or go with the original Kreisler version to see how he interpreted it. Personally, this isn't my favorite version of the song, but one can tell she is a good player. (I am a violinist)
@hrhsam15 жыл бұрын
I think she played it decently. Those who are calling this interpretation an insult to Kreisler are being drama queens.
@sneddley15 жыл бұрын
I think it's fast partly because she tends to shorten many notes to the point that the specific rhythmic feel of the waltz is lost much of the time. Maybe she just wanted to play it her own way, which at least in principal, is something I admire.

@fluffynamedkimba i do agree, i have the same feeling that vanessa has been pushing the tempo for effects sake (a little like andre rieu!). maybe that is what musicians are discussing about when asians are taking on european music. saludos a todos charlie f. kohn at sixpence-pictures com fine art photography // design // madrid

@fluffynamedkimba I agree. She's playing at the speed of light, like running down the street trying to catch a bus. Kreisler would spin in his grave because of what she has done to his work. She is clearly a pop-star trying to incorporate Classical into her repertoire in order to draw a larger audience. Nothing more. PS: She reminds me of Andrea Bocelli, the Italian tenor. He's clearly more Pop than he is Classical. And most of his audience are women screaming how beautiful he is.

@juhaszistvangeza: The score I'm refering to is a modern reprint of the 1910 first edition by Schott. Along with annotations and fingerings by the composer himself. It can't get much more original, unless you find an old print or manuscript. VM deviates greatly from that and I think these deviations change the entire character of the piece. Which is why I dislike her interpretation and find others that float around KZbin much better. Re-interpreting can work out or fail. Imho this one failed.

@PreciousInPink When you said "no matter in what way they interpret it," that frightened me. It made me think that, if you were to hear a relative or friend of yours in the shower, singing what's supposed to be beautiful Classical Music, yet sounding, instead, like a drunk cat meowing on a fence at night, you would have absolutely no problem with that. (Yet more reason for you not to be commenting on something you clearly know nothing about.)

/me sighs .... interpretation folks. One may or may not like it, your option, but it *is* the artist's interpretation. Given Ms. Mae's body of work, I think we can agree that she is an artist. Me, I'd like a crisper, more literal interpretation, but this is *her* version. What would be interesting is hearing *why* she made it so ... fluid. ^_^

@PreciousInPink You missed my entire point. You're wrong: no, it's not ok to just play a composition in any way you please. They were written a certain way. They're marked not just in notes but also in music-expressive terms on top, etc. For someone to come along and play it any way they please, and to say that's ok, proves that the performer knows nothing about music and is seeking their own attention. (That's like some American Idol star trying to sing an Opera Aria. No thank you.)

One need not create art to critique it. As Kant said the beauty of art can be best judged by its fulfilling of the need. If this doesn't fulfill the need of Mekuchika then it is not necessarily beautiful to him/her. The problem is that this field is subjective towards taste. While some critiques are useful "VM is certainly a fine musician, but I think she failed to capture what Kreisler intended," (MoerpheusElPadre) and others are less, "horrible,vanessa is not violinist," (mekuchika)...[cont]

@mangoooooify I'm not a professional violinist, just an amateur. But I've been playing the violin for about 20 years now. I know my way around the instrument. What's your basis to judge anyone's violin play? All I'm saying is a professional like Vanessa Mae should be able to provide a better performance. Just take a look at the sheet music and listen to this clip. It's obvious that she's playing the piece sloppily. Besides: You needn't be a chef to taste if a soup is oversalted

This sounds as if Vannesa Mae was half asleep while playing it There is staccato in this piece. There are stops in this piece. And there are rallendando and accellerandos. They are what gives this piece it's character. In this performance she ignored these and thus nearly butchered the piece. I'm an amateur and I can play this. With staccato, stops etc. A professional be able to do much better. Even after a lot sleep deprivation...

No such thing as stretching the bar in Kreisler? You just heard it done! VM is not my "thing" by any means--but she has some talent--I just don't like her kind of violin playing. The thing that she does better than most is targeting her audience and marketing. And so what if she is dfferent; it's just another style and no one forces us to play like her, purchase her CDs. She has done well creating an "image"and style and that's okay. To me it's "camp" but to each their own.
@Ddraig6414 жыл бұрын
What is really amazing is the lack of knowledge about her and her musical talent and background. Listen to her interpretation of Bach's Toccata and Fugue. Bach would have applauded, why, because in his time he too was thought of as a little extreme. Yes she is a "pop"star and thereby given a little more leniency by the masses. However, I guarantee if she was to play this piece as it had been written. You would either complain, or be astounded by her perfection. You just can't please everyone.

@McRat1968 Not to barge in... but, the point of singing in the shower is not for YOUR enjoyment... but the singer's... it's like masturbatory music. Who the hell do you think you are to strip someone else's freedom to pursue happiness when it clearly does not infringe upon your's?
