Katie Leclerc never said she was deaf. Her character, Daphne was deaf but she has struggled a lot in real life with the meniere's disease to the point where there are days that she can't hear at all. In-fact when she landed the role on Switched at Birth producers provided her with real hearing aids instead of fake ones because she needs them.

I’m sorry to say to the lady who played bay on switched at birth I can honestly say that you’re wrong when it comes to people being blind. Because I feel you have not met a lot of blind people. Because I am blind meaning I only see a tiny tiny tiny bit of light close to my face and I’ve been blind since I’ve been six months old and I’m deaf so I’m deaf blind. If you say that black people don’t want to be blind that is not true. There are a lot of luck there are a lot of blind people in the NATIONAL FEDERATION OF THE BLIND who is proud to be blind. If you go to the National Federation Of The Blind U2 page and look for the Blind I am driver challenge there’s actually a blind guy who’s driving on Daytona Speedway and he is the first blind guy who done it. There are blind lawyers they’re blind people that got your doctorate I know a lady here in Tampa that’s almost totally blind she has her own text business she had when I met her 24 years ago when she had more vision so there are a lot of blind people who is proud to be blind and you just have to meet all different blind people you can’t just can’t meet two or three in and they say they don’t want to be blind. You have to make tons of blind people because there are tons and tons of us who don’t want to see that we’re proud of being blind we have jobs we are married we have kids we travel. The ones who don’t want to be blind are the ones who lost her vision later in life. The ones who are proud to be blind where are the ones who was either born blind I went blind when we was babies. So for the lady who played Bay to say the blind people don’t want to be blind is false. Because I am proud and happy to be deaf blind I’ve been like I said blinds in six months old I started losing my hearing between the age of 10 and 12 and now today without hearing aids I’m totally deaf with hearing aids I profoundly hard of hearing wear for me to hear with the hearing aids I have to crank everything really really loud. So I am proud to be deaf blind and it really hurts me that you say blind people don’t want to be blind because it’s false you just met a few and you can’t base all blind people on that for you. But I’m sorry this really really ticks me off when people say all black people don’t want to be blind which is not true so I’m just really mad right now that the young girl who played B happen to see it out of her mouth that it’s false
