I just watched the Miss America documentary on Hulu. As a Black girl growing up in the 2000s, I was very aware of Vanessa as an actress and singer, and my mom told me about the scandal in passing, but I never understood the magnitude of it until viewing the doc. What makes it all funny now is that she is undoubtedly the most successful Miss America winner in the pageant’s history. Her career has eclipsed that scandal, the misogynoir she faced, and her tenure as Miss America. Her resilience and her tenacity are what make her a queen in my book!

The scandal wasn’t ridiculous. The pics were graphic and she gave an interview about her child abuse and her difficulties growing up . If anything we learned that a Miss America doesn’t have a perfect life. I think she proved herself as a professional and lots of people gave her grace it wasn’t all an attack on her.

I've loved this woman and her body of work since the moment she hit the national stage. I'm only 5 years older and I can tell you that she was the dream woman of many young men like myself at the time. I was in the Army serving in Gemany (Bremerhaven) when the nude pics scandal hit. That Magazine was even sold all over Germany when it released and I got a copy of it on the very first day, even there. I knew that this was devastating for her, but I also knew that somehow the storm would blow over and she'd make it and still thrive because she was so talented. She stands before us today as a testament to exactly that... and wow, what a career, what a life, what a Gal? 👌 ❤
