I used to shoot weddings back in the 70s with a Yashicamat with a fixed 80mm lens. Cost about $100 brand new. My backup camera was another old Yashicamat that I bought for $25 in a pawnshop. I used a Graflex strobe or a Sunpak speedlight on a bracket to light it. 😂😊😉 I shot the whole wedding with what was considered a "normal" lens.

The argument is make for the backup being the same, it’s going to very familiar and can be setup exactly the same with the same body layout. That said, until I got two R5’s, my backup was typical the one I upgraded from. 🙂

Such valuable tips as always! I think people get a bit too sensitive when a real life pro photog doesn't have a favourable opinion of their brand of product...guys listen to what she's saying which is it pays to invest more to get into the ecosystem you want/need for your business. Reliability, after sales service and peace of mind are all valid reasons for pros to pay for pro gear that their livelihoods rely on. I watch pro photogs to learn from their real experiences, not to validate my purchases as a hobbyist/amateur. It doesn't make sense for Vanessa to advocate for a brand she doesn't use or believe in just to make you feel better. I have Godox everything and her opinion doesn't make me feel bad , especially since I don't require them to run my business and feed my family.

This is a great video, until the shilling about "something is $100, something is $1000" bit - that was just a bit too obviously coming from someone who is getting paid by the '$1000' version, and hasn't (recently) used the '$100' version! I know Vanessa (or a staffer) will respond to this, but I'll stand by it - the cheaper version these days is probably - at most - 10% behind the astronomically more expensive options, if at all. I'm not a Canon guy, but Canon makes great stuff, so go for it, pick a brand. There are much better cost/benefit options out there for lighting though, so make sure you check those options out before committing to a system. Thanks Vanessa, there's a reason I keep watching and commenting on your videos - I might not always agree with everything, but they're still great!
@VanessaJoy
@VanessaJoy 10 ай бұрын
See I think it’s “shilling” that you flat out attack my integrity here. I am NOT getting paid by Profoto. In fact, I just TURNED DOWN an ambassador paid relationship with them so that I can give my opinion with honesty without people like you deciding they think they know me and why I say things. Honestly, don’t watch my videos if you’re going to sit here and attack my character.
@cadmus777
@cadmus777 10 ай бұрын
@@VanessaJoy I'm sorry you think I was 'attacking your integrity' or your 'character', as I wasn't - I was just disagreeing with your blanket assertion on lighting costs. I did make the connection between you and ProFoto that I may have been wrong on, however you've made so much content over so many years that I'm afraid "people like me" will absolutely think they know why you're saying what you're saying, based on the sheer volume of times you've said it. There's no way I'm the only person that felt this way. I do apologise if you're not getting paid by them. Have you personally purchased every single ProFoto light you've ever used though? If you just turned down a job that they offered you, they obviously see the benefit in you continuing to promote their products. No idea why that could be. I'm going to keep watching your videos, sorry, but I will also continue to disagree with your idea of value and quality in lighting products. I don't think you are of low integrity or character, I just think you are a successful business woman who knows what they're doing.
@VanessaJoy
@VanessaJoy 10 ай бұрын
“A bit too obviously coming from someone who is getting paid” is both wrong as well as attacking my integrity insinuating that I don’t have an opinion of my own or that my opinion, and therefore lying, is controlled by dollars. Yes I have paid for every Profoto light that I currently own, not that it’s ANY of your business NOR does that warrant accusing me of lying or making preferential statements based on anything but my own opinion. You can disagree with what lighting I like, but DO NOT again accuse me of such horseshit.
@cadmus777
@cadmus777 10 ай бұрын
@@VanessaJoy OK, fair enough. I was wrong in my belief that you are/were paid by ProFoto, I stand corrected, and I apologise for the way I put it. I never thought, said, accused or implied that you had no opinion of your own, but I will refrain from thinking or commenting such horseshit in the future.

I'm not a pro but I do a few weddings a year. I have my Canon R6 as my main camera and the 5DIII as a back up. Only lenses I use are 35 mm f1.4 and 85 mm f1.4 and sometimes the 100 mm macro. I have like 15 lenses but I don't want to carry 2 heavy bags. I bring one or two flashes. The 70-200 mm f2.8 is too heavy to carry all day. Of course I bring lots of memory cards and extra batteries.

You think you might integrate the new RF 24-105/2.8? 15-35/2.8, 24-105/2.8, 135/1.8 seems like the best "minimal gear" that covers alot of range. I'd keep the 50mm or 85mm 1.2 primes somewhere, just bc those are stunning.

Love your content keep up the amazing work! I had a quick question I've been shooting weddings and portraits for about two years and looking to add to my kit. I currently shoot the R5 with the RF 50 1.2, RF 70-200 2.8 and the EF 17-40 4.0. This has worked well for me but thinking of adding a lens and curious what you thought would complement my set the best? I know my wide angel is dated but I feel I don't go for it that often, just got establishing shots mainly. =)

Yeah, one has to wonder about the utility of Profoto. 1000-1100 for a 1 on-camera flash? Okay, so you do that, and being 5 o'clock somewhere on a Friday night, your Profoto flash breaks. You do not have a serviceable backup due to the cost. You panic. You check your closest big city. Maybe you get lucky and there is actually a neighborhood camera store...Chances are, they are not going to have a Profoto light in stock. Chances are, they may have a Godox in stock. Even better, because you can get the top of the line Godox on-camera flash (V1 Pro) for $329, you can actually afford to have 1-2 backup units. Godox also has a TTL adapted base that allows you to take an older flash from a different vendor, and use that in the mix as well. I have no financial interest in Godox. I use their equipment because I got tired of throwing large amounts of cash on items without an increase in utility. Yeah, photography gear gets expensive, but learning the basics of exposure, lighting, positioning, and composure, become the foundation rather than the gear. Granted, it is great to have good tools, but one needs the skills. An old adage from competitive target shooting, "A bad shooter will shoot bad with great equipment. A good shooter will shoot good regardless of the equipment."
