Agree it's a beautiful place, have been going there since the late 90s and now live in Thailand. The "tubing scene" has thankfully been toned way down but beware of cocktails and other random alcoholic drinks - several deaths recently from fake booze (methanol). Take care stay safe.

Exellent tips. I am visiting Laos in February for the first time and have Vang Vieng planned for most of the outdoor activities. I am keen to know if I should take a personal guide who can also watch over my things when tubing as a safety precaution?

Vang Vieng is the perfect outdoor hub! You should rent a dry bag when you go tubing so you can just put your belongings in there. There aren't really any guides around that watch over stuff. We also left some of our stuff at the tubing place and the guy was fine with that as well!

They definitely have them in Blue Lagoon 1! Didn't see people wearing them in the 3rd one. But maybe you can check with them! They might add a rental fee if you want a life jacket

It wasn't such an issue in Laos! As long as you adhere to some of the general drone rules

VV is fine as there's no airport around as far as I know. Best not to fly it in Luang Prabang because the airport is located inside the little UNESCO town.

To rent a motorcycle, do you have to know the road rules pretty good? Do they want you to have a specific license?

No you’re fine as long as you’re comfortable driving dirt roads and roads with potholes. Best to have some experience! Other than that, not so much traffic on the roads
