It was one of my dad's favorite songs. Often, while cooking or lying down, he would fire up this and other songs by Vangelis, Ennio Morricone or classics from the 80s like Bad Boys Blue and just enjoyed the moment. Unfortunately, he died of cancer last year. However, his brilliant taste in music, which he infected me with, is still here.

Once upon a time, I heard this song on a tape my parents had in the family cassette player. Heard it once or twice when I was 8 or 9 and loved it, but never knew its name. Then we moved and no one played it on the radio or on TV anymore, so I was unable to enjoy it by listening to it, but only by humming it to myself. I've had this song in my head for a quarter of a century without knowing its name, until today. Shivers down my spine, ladies and gentlemen, shivers down my spine.

Cuando escribiendo un libro histórico relacionado con el descubrimiento y colonización en La Isla de Quisqueya, hoy República Dominicana, y el cuerpo de mis exposiciones se hallaba en una tercera parte Capitular, se me hizo imperante crear un espacio inusual antes de la dedicatoria titulado: CON EL DEBIDO RESPETO. Mi espíritu fue inductivo y encauzador tras volver a escuchar " La Conquista del Paraíso" de Vangelis, ver las imágenes fílmicas grabadas sobre este descubrimiento que fue punto de inflexión entre Medioevo y Modernidad, sentir respeto solemne y compunción, fue obligación en tal circunstancia. Viví momentos de introspección muy profundos y terminé con lágrimas resbalando sobre orogenias de mi rostro. Ello, porque comprendo de antemano que no podré deslindar la idiosincrasia, la cultura y la sociedad de los protagonistas en esta empresa viajera, de la grandeza que supuso cada minuto transcurrido durante esta travesía y esa historia eventual que fue comienzo para la proliferación de una etnia mestiza, heredada y acondicionada de aquella variedad cultural, española, africana, francesa, inglesa y haitiana. Una idiosincrasia societaria, española, africana, francesa, inglesa y haitiana entre Siglos XIV y XVIII en La Española. Hay una distancia subliminal muy cruel entre esta solemnidad de que escribo y la historia eventual tras la llegada y el comienzo de la colonización. He lamentado verme obligado a exponer detalles ocultados adrede por historiadores en aras del nacionalismo evidente de cada otro que soslayó algunos acontecimientos nada honrosos. Escribo haciendo una revisión de situaciones que resultan ser entredichos históricos que afectaron a nacionales dominicanos.

This piece should NOT be listened to via phone or a computer. This should be played on a high-end audio system with bass that vibrates the windows in your neighbor's house down the street... Not loud, just deep and rolling. This piece is so old (1992), yet, Vangelis' work is like a rock: never fades away and always means a mountain of emotions and effort. Magic!

Picture the scene. We're on a Caribbean cruise ship out of Southampton that has just set off from La Coruna in Spain, with six days' trans-Atlantic sailing ahead of us, next stop Barbados. And Martin Scott, the ship's DJ, plays Conquest of Paradise at full belt over the ship's tannoy, as everyone is on deck to watch the departure. A truly electrifying moment.

I think I can better your experience. Lake Nasser. On the 1900 built boat Prince Abbas. Only less than 50 of us. Just seen the modern huge dam built for Nasser. Then we cast off for 3-4 days sailing on Lake Nasser visiting 4 or 5 Temples, SO beautiful but lonely now in the desert. Eventually, a dot, just a dot on the Lake’s horizon…….Abu Simbel. Everyone gathers on deck. Suddenly, the tannoy, not used like this before, starts playing this music. We sail ever closer. And closer. The music is repeated over and over. Then we see those ‘dots’ are the utterly massive 4 statues built by Rameses 11. Think Moses and THE Pharaoh who eventually let the Hebrews go…..THAT Pharaoh. Then we see the ants all around those statues…..not ants. People, come to marvel. Then a smaller Temple by the side of Rameses huge one….he built it for his wife, beloved Nefertari. No, not Nefertiti. Nefertari. We’d seen her amazingly decorated Tomb in the Valley of the Queens. Closer and closer we sailed, with this wonderful music all the way. My friend and I were in absolute tears. As were others. No one talked. Everyone was totally awestruck in spite of seeing before, the Valley of the Kings, the cataracts of Aswan and Elephantine Island, wonderful beautiful Philae Temple island, the Temples of Karnak and Luxor, even the Pyramids. NOTHING beats this experience of seeing Abu Simbel, SO old, come closer and closer, with this music our ears. To see those 4 giant statues built by the pride of Rameses. Deep, deep into Egypt, on the border with Nubia, Somalia and others. Totally UNFORGETABLE.
