The music evokes many things for many people depending on life experiences. I think for those of us in our 40s that grew up in the 80s, it can really hit some emotional strings in our souls. Depending on your path in life, it could go from simple melancholy to deep dread. Visions of family members gone, perhaps even those that were not so kind, or even some event that was in fact positive, but the flow of time and the distance from those life events provoke a sadness that cannot be quenched.

Outstanding! But did a large contingent of the natives come out to greet your ship in outriggers?
The is one of the best film scores I have ever heard, it fits the film beautifully, the menace, the desire, the longing and the total hopelessness of it all. I thoroughly enjoyed the film, the acting was top notch and the scenery and cinematography were together a thing of beauty to behold. However it was because of Vangelis and this masterpiece of a film score that brought it all together. If you haven't read the book that this particular version of the film is based on I urge you to seek it out and read it, with Vangelis for company ofcourse.

First of all: I am not a composer. But I like good music, so I post my opinion here: Composing was in that time was different, then it is now. Nowadays we got a lot of "cheap" music to please the publishers an make money. None of this will prevail over time. Instead, all good composers will always be remembered in future times. The generations to come will still be listening to Vangelis and Enricio Moricone and a few others. Just like Beethoven, Mozart and others are still valued today. I'm thankful that I was alive when Morrricione, Vangelis, and a few others released their music for the first time. It was mind blowing,,,, Thank you, Legends!

I believe it would be near impossible for any mortal being not to be overwhelmed and overawed by the ominous and forbidding power of this music, gracefully melodic and beautifully majestic as it also is. Amazing, though amazingly haunting, amazingly elemental, and amazingly compelling, with a strong touch of menace as well, all while conjuring up these vivid images of a vast seascape that is absolutely stunning, yet deceptively calm, deceptively gentle, and which has the tremendous power to rise up and overwhelm. For what is powerfully evoked are these themes and feelings of utter loneliness, of despair, of heartache, of uncertainty, of barely suppressed fear, of passing days, of these whispering voices that warn and cruelly taunt, and of eerie winds that unnerve and haunt, along with, ultimately, such feelings of hope, these feelings steeped in this type of desperate hope that are evoked, of this hope that was believed to have been lost, swallowed up by the immeasurable depths of the restless, fearsome ocean. Ah, what scenes of majestic beauty are conjured, along with scenes of this majestic menace, this majestic sense of serene desolation, of a tranquility that is only superficial, and of this deeply felt yet unspoken terror, this palpable terror alleviated only by the sight of land (preferably with palm trees, lush vegetation and this plentiful supply of loose, beautiful women). Any ways, what a score, both magnificent and haunting, eerily reflective and ominously threatening, both otherworldly and fiercely elemental, and both of such unfathomable immensity and of this unsettling, brutal immediacy, all while featuring elements that are both of this menacing and meditative nature. Music such as this captures it all.

Hauntingly beautiful - this music is always there in my heart and head, especially the closing theme. The music, and the scene of Fletcher Christian having to leave behind his girl in Tahiti before the mutiny, makes me acutely remember a beautiful girl, Patricia, that I fell head over heels for in Peru during a two-and-a-half month university field school there in 1987. My time with her was all too brief (some time in Lima and a side-trip to a mountain town in the Andes), and I had to leave. It absolutely tore my heart out, as I knew the practicality of her coming to live with me was just not there, and to be fully fair to her, after such a short time together, she wasn't sure whether she would want/be able to leave her family to come to North America to join me. I also had no career at that point to be able to support her in a relationship. We wrote to each other for a time, but between the language barrier and us getting on with our lives, eventually the letters stopped coming. A few years later I served as an officer in the Navy and spent a fair amount of time at sea during our training phases, including 3 months on a sailing vessel. This music haunted me sometimes then too.

Mr. Roving, your remarks about this music: 'an awareness of the ominous force, yet serene tranquility of the sea', are a perfect description. Memorable, haunting music indeed.

When did this genius pass away? Never even knew that he had gone from this earth. His music inspired generations. And influenced a lot of artists. Sincerely so. He will be missed greatly by me and countless others. His music was hauntingly beautiful. Love you forever vangelis. You are with God for sure. ❤😇🙏

I agree!--I'm 49--and saw this movie when I was 13/14--always gave me the chills. Of course fell in love with Mel Gibson's character immediately. I feel bad for his wife who was back home in CA raising their growing soon-to-be brood of 7 children (I, too, have 7 children)...while her husband is out filming with naked Tahitian woman LOLOL Mel Mel Mel you had the tough life for sure! (not) I do not forgive him for hitting his Russian gf in the mouth and knocking out her two front teeth a few years ago, while she was holding their little baby, Lucia. Alcoholism and drug addiction does that to a person...so very sad.

Yes, in that opening theme there is all: the vastness of the oceans, the call of the seas, the swaying of the sailing ships, the adventure, the beauty and the sadness of the tropical sunsets, and above all, the tragic typical of the human events…

There have been 3 well known versions of this film and it's averaged around 25 years before it's remade and updated. If I remember correctly this version was released around 1985 so it's well overdue its update but I get the feeling Hollywood daren't go there as this is just impossible to better. The musical score grabs you and is all engrossing,.....the haunting sounds of impending doom which make this film one of my all time favourites. 🤗

🔥 🔥 🔥 the music keeps me wanting to re watch this movie. So experimental and so risky for it’s time and think. Vangelis always pushed the envelope it seems. Thank you for your contribution you are now part of the galaxy again bright Star 🌟
