Another great video - Thanks for highlighting the UK ladies and their KZbin channels - my question - In the comments below you said you choose to invest in VWRL and not Life Strategy because the Life Strategy is a mixture of bonds and equity with a heavier UK bias. I am a newbie investor (1 year), slightly more risk averse, who wants a hands-off easy approach to investment. What would be the difference in the rate of returns over a certain period? Would there be a huge difference? Hope the question makes sense. 😀

Hi Victoria - I couldn’t possibly comment on future returns as no one knows. Based on historical long term averages, stocks have returned 10% per year and long term bonds have returned 5-6% per year. Obviously bonds do better when markets go down.

I have VUSA at 25% and then a bunch of individual stocks that I've researched and done the DCF calculations for and read the 10-ks. I enjoy this so it's fine. So far over the last 5 years I have done better than the S&P 500 which is my benchmark but am well aware that over the long term beating the index is going to be very difficult but its still fun.

I would value your opinion. thank you.
@nickjm41082 жыл бұрын
Hey Vincent. Your choices are either lump sum or dollar cos average. Lump sum investing outperforms 65% of the time compared to DCA. The true question is your tolerance to risk. If you’re too unsure about current prices then DCA. If you’re young and will be investing for 30 years then you’ve got plenty of time in the market not to worry about it tbh. If I had £20k now I would lump sum ( but then again, 20k would only be 20% of my portfolio). If it was my first £20k I would probs DCA, especially if I was new to investing. This is just what i would do, you’ve got to find what suits you :)

You misunderstand the data. Outperforming the market is hard when you take the fees into account. There are many hedge funds that beat the market over the long term, but due to their fees, their customers dont get to enjoy that outperformance. But if they were to invest for their own account they would definately beat the market over the long term. But of course it is hard, as it should be.
@nickjm41082 жыл бұрын
Yeah I could have been more clear on this but 1) the principle is still the same and 2) individuals do not have the resources that hedge funds do to make this possible. There’s also the point that people jump in and out of hedge funds which means they rarely see the returns of the hedge funds do (e.g Ark invest)

So much talking and so little direction. Just tell us what YOU do and why! Video starts at 7.41 my guys. My advice Nick, seeing as you might need it! (6k subs) START ALL your videos with the absolute bare bones, most important / specific info, then go on to explain everything in detail / deep dive. This is really good way to one, gain interest but also subscribers. As I'm willing to bet money most of the people that stumble upon your videos are just like me and have fuck all knowledge (and attention span) so being bombarded with so much info when you don't have a clue what it means is really off putting. Hope that's useful feedback and thanks for taking the time to make and post your videos.

Hi Sol - appreciate where you’re coming from but equally, you can’t argue with the numbers. I agree this format shouldn’t work but it does. It pulls the most views for my channels and the most subs. As it stands this is my 2nd most successful video to date. Hitting the right level of information is also hard. If it’s too basic, people get bored. Equally, if it’s too high level, people will leave. Take your feedback on board but equally, why would I change the format of my most successful content? What would you do? (Unsure if you have a channel/have experience creating content on KZbin)

63% of VWRL in US based equities so you are getting VUSA plus a bit if diversification for over 3x the annual charges. If the S&P crashes then VWRL will crash, that is guaranteed as the US ecomony drives the world economy. VUSA outperforms VWRL as it is held back by countries like the UK that underperform long term.
@nickjm41082 жыл бұрын
Yep - but equally, if it was around in the 80s/90s then it would have been held back by the US as the US at that point was underperforming
@iandavies91542 жыл бұрын
@@nickjm4108 Possibly, but with 63% US weighting VWRL is very strongly correlated with VUSA. It is not worth the 3x the costs for very little diversification.

@@iandavies9154 Not sure if your point Ian. I agree with everything you say, I want my fund to represent the world economy. So if 63% of that is contained in the US then I’m happy with that
@iandavies91542 жыл бұрын
@@nickjm4108 VUSA and VWRL were both created on 22/05/12, since then VUSA would have returned about 320% and VWRL about 200%. Is that difference worth a bit of diversification to you?
@nickjm41082 жыл бұрын
@@iandavies9154 you’re getting hung up on past performance. As outlined in the video, I don’t try to play the game of ‘trying to outperform the market’. Diversification isn’t having an equal weighting for each region, it’s weighting by its market cap. If the US is ‘over valued’ then so be it.

You're missing out on bigger gains holding just this etf. its got a lot of tech which will hurt you in 2022. You only need to spend 30 mins a week rotating into other better performing elf's. I use sharepad to compare/find the best performing elf's and switch to better performing ones. Right now you would be better off switching to a world value etf. This has been outperforming your etf for several months. Buying one fund and sticking your head will not work well going forwards.

Completely disagree. If it was that simple, everyone would do it. There’s no magic bullet so I’d rather just track the market

@@nickjm4108 Not saying it's easy. It requires a bit of work, experience, knowledge and an ability to be nimble. Tracking the market will not lead to easy gains in 2022, as the fed is not going to be propping up the market.

@@dextersfootball It's long term though so I'm not bothered by it's performance over the next year or even 5. I say this with a lot of respect, if you were that good at it then you would be a multiple billionaire with a hedge fund. All the data shows the vast majority lose to the markets.

@@nickjm4108 You don't need to be a multi billionaire hedge fund manager to make sensible decisions about rotating your portfolio. I note the top 10 stocks in your holding are all tech, so the fact that you don't care about your performance over the next 1-5 years should hold you in good stead.
