Investing is good the problem seems to be fund managers paid huge amounts of money for piss all in returns in the uk very poor !!!!

Another great video - Thanks for highlighting the UK ladies and their KZbin channels - my question - In the comments below you said you choose to invest in VWRL and not Life Strategy because the Life Strategy is a mixture of bonds and equity with a heavier UK bias. I am a newbie investor (1 year), slightly more risk averse, who wants a hands-off easy approach to investment. What would be the difference in the rate of returns over a certain period? Would there be a huge difference? Hope the question makes sense. 😀

Hi Victoria - I couldn’t possibly comment on future returns as no one knows. Based on historical long term averages, stocks have returned 10% per year and long term bonds have returned 5-6% per year. Obviously bonds do better when markets go down.

I have VUSA at 25% and then a bunch of individual stocks that I've researched and done the DCF calculations for and read the 10-ks. I enjoy this so it's fine. So far over the last 5 years I have done better than the S&P 500 which is my benchmark but am well aware that over the long term beating the index is going to be very difficult but its still fun.

Nice to see a UK youtuber pushing the need for diversification and simplification when picking a fund, as preached by many FI books. Have sattellite holdings for dabbling if you're that way inclined (I am) but no more than 10-15% of your total invested assets.

Thanks for this Nick. One question - if you needed income in retirement this would traditionally perhaps come from dividends - with the single fund philosophy these tend to be Acc funds, hence no income paid. To get income, would you plan to simply sell some down each year, eg. 3%? Great channel and information - keep up the good work!

Hi Nick, Can I have your opinion, I want to invest into the Vanguard Ftse All world UcITS (VWRL) fund. Im thinking of investing a straight £20,000 in one go. My query is do you think this is a good idea to invest a limp sum in one hit and if so should I check to see the performance of the fund to see if its down or up in price, or dosent it matter. I would value your opinion. thank you.
@nickjm4108
@nickjm4108 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Vincent. Your choices are either lump sum or dollar cos average. Lump sum investing outperforms 65% of the time compared to DCA. The true question is your tolerance to risk. If you’re too unsure about current prices then DCA. If you’re young and will be investing for 30 years then you’ve got plenty of time in the market not to worry about it tbh. If I had £20k now I would lump sum ( but then again, 20k would only be 20% of my portfolio). If it was my first £20k I would probs DCA, especially if I was new to investing. This is just what i would do, you’ve got to find what suits you :)

Great vids Nick, ur comments re we can never time the market, I've got abt 60k in cash Isa being eaten away by inflation >5%, shld I bite the bullet and transfer to vanguard (which is my intention anyway) even though unit prices are much higher than 12m ago. I appreciate things may drop after I tfr and its a long term 5-10yrs min thing, but just can't help but feel I'm buying at much higher price per share now, shld not worry abt past as if I continue to leave it in cash isa it will erode a further 5.1% anyways due to inflation, what re ur views?

@@nickjm4108 Thnaks Nick you're a gentleman, I'm gonna transfer and let the chips fall as they may as I will add to this on a monthly basis so that I benefit from the overall smoothing effect of pound cost averaging. If I don't make a move now when will I, besides with next to zero interest rates esp on cash isa and high inflation, my alternatives to stay in cash remains bleak. I went on an inflation calculator and discovered that if I kept it in cash for just over 10yrs assuming inflation remained above 5%, it wld go down by half in terms of its buying power, so I'm convinced now to move come what may.

@@nickjm4108 On Morningstar Website, “Baillie Gifford American Class B Accumulation” is a managed fund: If you click on “Advanced graph”, you can plot back until 1997. It gives a percent option view or a cash value view of how £100 might grow. From 1997 until 2022 the £100 would have increased to approximately £1800. You can also plot the S&P over this time period. The S&P index over the same period would have grown £100 to about £600. So it appear there is scope for a higher fees with the managed fund compared with an index tracker and you’d still be better off. I might be mis interpreting things, but that’s just how it looks to me at first sight.

If you look at the allocations on Hargreaves Lansdown 100% equity has 16.59% of the fund invested in Ireland as well as the UK bias, that's more than China, Taiwan and Japan combined in the Global all Cap just in Ireland. These decisions are straying well away from the All World/All Cap indexes to the point where it is no longer passive investing but active fund of fund managing.

I’m all in one fund VWRL it’s all you need for equities. To quote Lars Kroijer: You would therefore be claiming to see an advantage from allocating differently from how the multi-trillion dollar international financial markets have allocated. Rational investors who accept they don’t have edge should therefore simply buy the global equity market.

Very elementary ideas. S&P500 fund has significantly lower expense vs LS 80 or 100. LS has more allocation to UK vs other developed markets including US. If you want to allocate more weight to US, you will hold both. And on individual stocks vs fund - you don't do it for 1% but for bigger difference. You seem like beginner investor and your portfolio (1 fund) may at best be average (or below).

We have different philosophies on investing. I just go off the stats which show most stock pickers fall short of the global averages due to a mix of reasons. If elementary means more people getting better returns then in all for it.

What are your thoughts on this difference and could it entice you to switch from VWRL to Global All Cap in 2028?

You misunderstand the data. Outperforming the market is hard when you take the fees into account. There are many hedge funds that beat the market over the long term, but due to their fees, their customers dont get to enjoy that outperformance. But if they were to invest for their own account they would definately beat the market over the long term. But of course it is hard, as it should be.
@nickjm4108
@nickjm4108 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I could have been more clear on this but 1) the principle is still the same and 2) individuals do not have the resources that hedge funds do to make this possible. There’s also the point that people jump in and out of hedge funds which means they rarely see the returns of the hedge funds do (e.g Ark invest)

So much talking and so little direction. Just tell us what YOU do and why! Video starts at 7.41 my guys. My advice Nick, seeing as you might need it! (6k subs) START ALL your videos with the absolute bare bones, most important / specific info, then go on to explain everything in detail / deep dive. This is really good way to one, gain interest but also subscribers. As I'm willing to bet money most of the people that stumble upon your videos are just like me and have fuck all knowledge (and attention span) so being bombarded with so much info when you don't have a clue what it means is really off putting. Hope that's useful feedback and thanks for taking the time to make and post your videos.

Hi Sol - appreciate where you’re coming from but equally, you can’t argue with the numbers. I agree this format shouldn’t work but it does. It pulls the most views for my channels and the most subs. As it stands this is my 2nd most successful video to date. Hitting the right level of information is also hard. If it’s too basic, people get bored. Equally, if it’s too high level, people will leave. Take your feedback on board but equally, why would I change the format of my most successful content? What would you do? 63% of VWRL in US based equities so you are getting VUSA plus a bit if diversification for over 3x the annual charges. If the S&P crashes then VWRL will crash, that is guaranteed as the US ecomony drives the world economy. VUSA outperforms VWRL as it is held back by countries like the UK that underperform long term.

You're missing out on bigger gains holding just this etf. its got a lot of tech which will hurt you in 2022. You only need to spend 30 mins a week rotating into other better performing elf's. I use sharepad to compare/find the best performing elf's and switch to better performing ones. Right now you would be better off switching to a world value etf.
