Great content as always. Always simple, well explained and helps to educate :) i'm umming and erring on two things. I currently buy stocks on freetrade, but not in the ISA due to monthly charges. Tempted to open up an ISA with T212 after april 5th. ( my invest engine isa was 23/24). How good a platform is it, and am i best using my FT GIA for now and opening a different ISA for 24/25? Cheers Toby, any advice or pointers would be great

Great video! I’m eager to see if they do allow the ‘multi ISA’ concept, it has always seemed daft that you can’t just use your max £20K. My current platform doesn’t allow fractional shares, but so sometimes my monthly plan means I end up missing a total share of something by a few pounds and I end up with large parts of my monthly investments sat in cash. Annoying! I’ve stuck with them though as I like them overall as a customer, but would be good to be able to add to a different ISA on and off within the same year.

Love your Videos (and prefer them to the others available). I have few questions regarding S&P500: 1. if S&P500 is so popular and owned by many - doesn't it just artificially increase the prices of Company shares in the top 500? 2. Is there an index for i.e. 250 companies in the bottom half (or from i.e. 200-300 :) ) of S&P500 and how does that perform? 3. Does the share price artificially goes up in the short period if the company makes it to S&P500? Maybe just a topic for another video. Thanks

Yes, in theory - that's all you would need to do, keep track yourself. However also maybe in the future the data could be shred/linked so that its all tied to your NI number so the platforms would let you know how much you have left.

Hi Toby - really appreciate your straightforward and understandable information. It’s really helpful. Thank you
@TobyNewbatt
@TobyNewbatt 3 ай бұрын
Hi Michael. I use Trading 212 and InvestEngine alongside Vanguard. The reason is firstly because ISA rules only let me open one new isa per year and secondly, I actually like to have different pots for different purposes. E.g. I hold stocks on T212 that I want to keep separate from my index funds on Vangaurd/IE. I also don’t base my investing purely on the costs, although I keep a close eye on them. I find a careful balance works for me. I hope that makes sense. With the new isa rules in April we can all make even more choices but more on that later

I realised after a few months that S&P and global have a lot of cross over, do you think if I switched to put one of them into one fund would yield higher returns, because of cross over, rates to have each account etc? Or could there be upsides to investing in both of them?

But I've been seeing recently I could be doing better due to the U.K. bias in the fund. What would be your advice in April? Once I really looked at my costs I am now saving a fortune across my accounts now that I have everything sorted :) I fear that HL are in a long-term decline losing the battle to the newer platforms and only survive because old money props them up from people with very large accounts who remain loyal for no good reason.

@@massive_crypto7126 Some people try to correct their own error by transferring ISA 2 (the one paid into after ISA 1) to ISA 1. Some wait for HMRC to get in touch. I can't say what you should do because, although people frequently report doing what you've done, they tend not to relay the outcome on forums (which isn't:t much help!). In the end, if you've not done something like this before, I imagine the worst that would happen is HMRC contact you and make one of the ISAs lose the ISA status (so it becomes subject to CGT etc.). Thus if you're dealing with smaller amounts, its effect might be akin to a slap on the wrist. I imagine they would be harsh if people were abusing the system, such as trying to pay £20k into multiple ISAs where there would be a clear benefit of the person got away with it. But if it's a simple error I imagine they aren't unreasonable to people.

@TobyNewbatt
@TobyNewbatt 3 ай бұрын
Investments are not covered by any protections 😎. As they go up and down depending on the market. The protections were never designed to cover investments it’s all about protecting the cash and protecting from fraudulent providers. I did a video a few weeks back on the topic of what happens when your broker goes bust. 👍
@scottclarke1
@scottclarke1 3 ай бұрын
I get the market volatility but let’s say Invest Engine goes bust. Any funds you have invested wouldn’t be covered by any FSCS protection if it really came to that because only OIECs and Unit Trusts are covered and not ETFs. I get totally that ALOT would need to go catastrophically wrong to get to that point - just thought it might of been a good addition to your previous video
@TobyNewbatt
@TobyNewbatt 3 ай бұрын
@@scottclarke1 Getting mixed up here - I did a video on this explaining everything. :) Regardless of the platform or broker - if you buy an ETF - lets say a Vanguard one. it doesn't matter if the broker goes bust - you own the shares in the ETF managed by Vanguard. The value of those shares is determined by the underlying value of the shares. Sure, you might lose access to any buying/ selling whilst the platform gets sorted out BUT you still own those shares :) The protections are not designed in any way to protect you from investments going down - they are just designed to protect from fraud/ fraud especially with holding cash :)

So, I've moved a bunch of small dilapidated pensions pots into one place, stuck them onto a couple of ETFs and they are now going great guns - and its nice to just be able to see them after all these years! The thing is all those little pots have added up to something pretty close to the 85k FSCS protection limit. I have another pension that just potters along just over the 85k limit that I wouldn't mind moving into a SIPP. I'm curious do people really bother about spreading stuff about for greater protection? It would cost me about £130/year extra to keep a separate SIPP rather than stick it all into my existing SIPP provider. I'd probably stick it on the same/equiv ETFs.

Fidelity are currently paying £500 cashback on pension transfers £50k-£99k, and if holding only ETFs charge £90 per year. They become expensive if buying/selling ETFs though (£7.50 per trade) but certainly for a one-off transfer and hold are a decent option as you would basically get several years effectively at no platform cost due to the cashback. Even if not for FSCS, people may keep pots apart for this very reason potentially exploiting cashback offers) or just in a sense of knowing that if one firm suffered IT failures etc. they have a separate pot, especially at the point of drawdown when access is needed. Personally I like having different providers, not only for FSCS but for these reasons... and a couple of my pensions retained the 55 protected age, including my Fidelity one, so are remaining where they are, whereas the Vanguard did not so will be moved when I can make some decent money from moving it. On transfer though, just be aware that transferring for cashback or to save fees but doing so in cash, and therefore being out of the market, could mean missing a good period and effectively being no better off/worse off. The other day saw a 2% rise, for example, and with a decent pension pot being out of the market just for that day, saving £100 or whatever on platform fees then seems hardly a deal. (Of course, market could move in favour too, but in-specie avoids the risk)

@@adrianl5899That's interesting, I had ruled Fidelity out as their fees look pretty high, that ETF rate is pretty buried in their small print! I'll have another look. My £130 was based on Vanguard, but I'm not super excited about joining their platform TBH so if Fidelity is a cheaper option that's good.

Hi Toby, Many people say you should invest in a couple or more etfs to hopefully ride out poor performance in one or the other, you’ve decided a single one.. do you have a video on this thought process?

Just pick a global etf like Ftse all world, or MSCI. Stay away from thematic or sectors etfs.

Excellent video. Fantastic news after the lows of 2022. If every month was like the last few, I'd be retired, but I'm gonna hold on for a few years, as I'm only 60...... let's hope this bull market last a bit longer 👍👍👍
