“Oriental” is a perfume classification that is being removed and relabeled as “Amber” as a more accurate term (apparently non-derogatory). I don’t think Vanilla Diorama is as sweet and cloying as you describe it. In my opinion, it starts off like a more tamed Le Lion or modernized Shalimar, that morphs into a less harsh Mitzah, and soon into what I wanted Ambre Nuit to be. I think Vanilla Diorama is a hit - at least from what Dior had released in this year (EdenRoc being a total flop in my opinion, and Tobacolor being an ok release). Vanilla Diorama is an interesting and elegant release, while maintaining a casual vibe. Sell me your bottle!

Do you find it ironic they branded “Dior” into the naming of this perfume as Chanel has in Le Lion? Vanilla Diorama and Le Lion de Chanel??

@@usmellsgood I find it very amusing, actually. Whether this is Dior’s response to Le Lion or not (and I do believe it might actually be), I am starting to think that Demachy has a very sarcastic and dark sense of humor with his approach to perfumery… he might just be having fun responding to Chanel’s take on what is “the future” in a more fun and less constricted form of expression. I actually enjoy wearing this one over Le Lion; maybe due to my basic nose, my lax demeanor, or maybe because I desire uncomplicated and fun. Life is already complicated as it is… and while art is complex, it should not be complicated. There is complexity in simplicity. As unoriginal as Vanilla Diorama is, I think it’s probably the most beautiful perfume Dior has released this year.

What's wrong with Rum, in fact, the Rum scent is one of the more pricey absolutes to add to perfume. Straight to Heaven is easily one of the most unique DNAs with a heavy rum emphasis balanced by cedar and ambergris. Its uniqueness stands head & shoulders above most bland niche releases (even by Kilian) today

I don’t think that this seasoned perfumer is the problem with Dior. It’s the direction of Dior’s marketing execs. They shape the tone of what should be put out to the consumer.

Great review man, gotta try it. I do like Rum on fragrances, there is a wonderful rum fragrance called grand pirates reserve by atkinsons. And of course I wanted to mention, a great Vanilla fragrance: spirituous double vanille, or maybe Angelique noir, incredible vanillas.

Don’t know if they changed the formula or something but I recently got it for Christmas from one of my best friends. I live in NYC, and let me tell you everywhere I go I am getting compliments left and right from both men and women. Is a very mature scent, and honestly was a bit off-putting at first, but I fell in love with the dry down, and I’m assuming that’s what everyone is loving.

This scent is beautiful! I received a sample from Dior with my purchase of Sauvage Elixer and 5 days later ordered. This guy is entitled to his opinion but for whatever reason hates Dior and he never has anything positive to say about them

Le Lion starts out AMAZING then quickly turns into the basic Chanel aldehydes that I personally can’t stand. It was a huge disappointment for me. I know this comment is sacrilegious but I don’t care.

I got a mini bottle of this in my recent fragrance order, and I was very excited to get my nose on it. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed with it. I’m a Dior fanboy, but I found this one to be just okay, it kind of reminded me of those apple cinnamon air fresheners. It’s not a must have for me. If I feel like wearing a vanilla forward scent, Ani is still my go to.

I’ll be at Sak’s next week and I’ll give it a sniff. I’m glad you did this review so I don’t get my hopes up too much. Honestly, the sweetest perfume I have is Shalimar and that’s as far as I can go. Hopefully we’ll get something more creative from this line soon. Maybe their target market is just not for us anymore?🤔 Going to wear Rouge Trafalgar and enjoy this hot but beautiful summer day. Hey eugen ! Fan from mont tremblant (quebec) here since few years. I dont know if my nose tricking me but for me vanilla diorama smells like bois des iles and feve delicieuse mixed together in the dry down ....headache inducing.. (Just got a bottle of tobacolor and this one is a better release by far) sorry for my english lolll have a good day

It’s a well made perfume that fits inside the box that Dior has built around itself, adding a ton of sweet notes as that’s what sells.

Just got a sample of this and I had to come back to this video. This is the most boring, uninspired release. Totally agree with you on that point Demachy is taking a page out of Dua's book now, mix matching fragrances. The boozy vanilla a la Fahrenheit le Parfum, the orange/pink pepper from Ambre Nuit. Demachy isn't even trying. Like George the Fragrance Apprentice said in his video, Dior no longer wants to be Pink Floyd, they went all in to Michael Jackson (Chanel). But it's like one of those Vegas impersonators or a professional cover band. Fun to watch for the novelty but the art is not there. It's art in Chanel's world because that's what they do. In Dior's world, it's just selling out (selling out well but they lost their roots)

SDV is airy and whimsical, Vanilla Diorama is thick and goopy, syrupy vanilla and sugar, sticky balsam resins, good perfume but not a good fit for me.

Lune Feline is the only vanilla of late that pushes the boundary. They all seem the same now. I’m a big Vanilla lover too, but i want to see more risks taken with Vanilla than playing it safe. I loved Tobacolor tho. That was a good release.

Dior's following the trend. Even niche brands are getting away with generic bs. They need to create a price bracket similar to Tom Ford's signature line and put this stuff in there. The $100 to $200 USD range. Leave the prives for interesting stuff like the classic prives. Hell, it doesn't even have to be complex. Look at what Alberto Morillas is going at Gucci. This 3-5 note perfume but he's giving something close to worthy of the price tag
