My first visit to Bangkok was in 1966, R&R from the Vietnam War. About the Rex Hotel bit: My first wife and I were married in Bangkok on October 17, 1969. Our wedding reception was at the Rex Hotel on the pool and party floor. (If I knew how to do it, I'd post a photo or two of our reception.) She was Thai of course and I was stationed at Camp Friendship up near Khorat. We were married for 43 years, until she passed away in 2012. Over the years since our wedding, we visited Thailand probably 20 times, including once for my brother's wedding to a Thai lady up in Nong Khai. My mother especially liked to visit and she went with us at least 8 times over the years. Our son has moved back to Bangkok several years ago. That bit of the hotel in this video brought back memories of "long ago and far away". Thank you.

I’m so glad to have come across your channel (all by chance!) and have signed up immediately as a subscriber. I lived and worked in Bangkok from 1969 for over 30 years for different entities, the first one being Mater Dei School in Ploenchitr and the last the Asian Institute of Technology in Pathum Thani. Your vanishing Bangkok series surely filled me with nostalgia. I have retired in my home country, the Philippines, and continue to visit and revisit Thailand. It was a sad day when I surrendered my Resident certificates/documents to the Immigration Office and said goodbye to Thailand, my second home for so many years - in fact all my professional life. Thanks for your vlogs. I shall look forward to more in the future, and will recommend your channel to my Filipino friends and colleagues who like me have very fond memories of Thailand, the Thai people, Thai cuisine and everything Thai.

If condos distroy clubs, may be we need a law that they have to give space to the clubs below one of their car park decks. 14.13 ... that old building in royal hands looks like indiana jones or Lara Croft 23:48 ... the bonus shot shows how much more space there was in that time and trees and air and how better the car design was. The Federal Hotel is where I first stayed in Bangkok in 1987 when I was a mere 23 years old and what an experience THAT was for a First-Timer like myself! Still, I DID have a wonderful time there and the service was great. I went back there in 1988 and it was fully-booked so I ended up at the Sukhumvit Crown Hotel which has become my HQ in Bangkok when I'm down from Chiang Mai to visit. The Crown is now called SI 6 but otherwise, it's about the same and I'm always happy to visit it. Thanks for another great video, Pat--brings back many-a-memory! 🙂

Hi Pat, I used to stay at the Rex evry year from 1998 till its closure. The rooms were old but great, spacious, some of the aircons a bit of a lottery. Bathrooms had bath thubs and powerful showers. Big bed with great hard mattresses (Darling brand), fantastic sleep for my bad back. The staff had been there for years and most were very friendly from the door guys, reception staff, cleaners to the old manager . The breafast was really good at the Rexa 24 hours coffee shop where I used to get my "poat eg" (poached eggs) , bacon just the way I liked it by the old lady who also was working there all that time. Used to be 1000-1200 baht a night. I miss it very much, every time greeted like an old friend. Luckily, I found another good place but I am keeping that one to myself, selfish I know, but I dont want it to be spolied (:>)))). When I used to stay a few omths in Bangkok, I stated in AA House Soi 36, cheap and chearful, 6000/months but great staff again, good coffee shop ( friendly lady cook with 6 fingers hands and the cat also had 6/7 fingers paws, no kidding), laundry and a shop where you could get most daily necessities. Also moto taxis just outside, very conveniant for Thonglor BTS and many shops too, Tesco and BigC on Rama4, Emporium at Soi24, etc. Not sure if AA House still there...Cheers.

I fell into the Rex at midnight once in 2008 when l was too lazy to go all the way home, too drunk and taxis refused me. I remember it was a bit worn out and on the ground floor.

Loved how the Beatniq condo at least tried to connect its building to the original Rex Hotel, could so so easily have just been another soulless glass facade. Would like to visit the Bangkokian museum and see the old wooden buildings of Bang Rak. In the meantime I'm off to listen to my old Frankie goes to Hollywood albums.

The Beatniq did a good job even the same angle as the Rex, hope they didn't reuse the foundations though! I forgot to mention Holly Johnson in that segment!

@BangkokPat the 80's was a fantastic time for music, just glad my parents didn't understand any of the words from some of the music I was playing.

It's only when watching your videos that it becomes apparent just how much has changed and how wide those changes have been. Still lots more changes to come, at least some things have been saved and hopefully there will be more saved in the future . Cheers Pat for documenting these times, regards to you and May :) Are the cats the only constant .... :)

Another great video Pat. Miss big time Cheap Charlies. The bar was the one incentive for us to go down Soi 11. ( Only pee no shit )...famous sign in Charlies. 😁 Another great bar gone is the Huntsman Pub in the basement of the Landmark Hotel ( COVID victim )

Pat, Nice meeting you at last weeks meetup on soi 11. Having spent 6 years in Bangkok from 1998 to 2004, and then a month each year thereafter, thanks for this video. Bangkok has changed so much since 1998, it’s hard to recognize each year when I return. Last month was my first return after covid, I looked for Cheap Charlie’s for an hour. Too sad…
