Blind spot. It's where the back of the eye opens for the optic nerve. There are no photoreceptors (rods and cones) there for light. It actually can work without closing your eye for many other things.

For those who are confused There is a spot called the "Blind Spot" in your eye where the optic nerve is connected and there are no rod or cone cells and hence you are basically "blind" in that spot The reason why you don't see a black spot over there always is because your brain fills in that spot with details from the surroundings So when you are looking at the X you're blind spot covered his head and hence your brain automatically filled that blind spot with the orange background that was behind him, giving you the illusion that his head disappeared And when he moved the rod up and down your brain automatically filled that blind spot with the rod as the rod was in the surrounding then along with the background This may not be exactly correct this is what I've heard

Kara Reid Actually our eyes have these blind spots where the nerves connect them to the brain, there are no cells to see anything and the brain just fills the gap in with what's around. That's why we could see the continuous black bar, because the brain picks up the pattern and fills the gap in.

This isnt an illusion. It is the space in your eye that is unable to see. Everyone has a blind spot. Most brains will put something in that space which is similar to what was seen before, those people have an extreme imagination. The people who see his head dissapear tend to not have much of imagination. Others will see his head still but the colors are all incorrect, which is the in between.

it's not that, the blind spot is due to the area of your eye where your optic nerve leaves your eyeball. there are no rods or cones in that area so you can't see anything because the rods and cones are responsible for perceiving rays of light. you have the blind spot in both your eyes. if you cover your left eye and look at his head the "x" will disappear. the reason you can see the black bar is because your brain is constantly filling that spot with images that's why you've never noticed it before. since the black bar crosses from everywhere else you can see, then into the blind spot, your brain just says ok this image goes here then... and you percieve that the bar is there and his head is not. if his head was as wide as the black bar, you would be able to see it the same as the bar. but since the area of the blind spot is bigger than his head, which is why you have to move away from the monitor, it disappears completely. also the background is a consistent color. the blind spot is also the color of the background. because your brain fills in that area with the surrounding imagery.

If the instructions are followed properly, the face vanishes for anyone. Also this is actually an illusion. It takes advantage of the blind spot in the eye to make the head disappear and then shows you how the brain will continue the image of the black line even across the blind spot. The bit of the black line which crosses the blind spot is illusory because we aren't actually seeing it but perceive it anyway.

For those wondering There are these sensors inside of our eyes that let us see. These are hooked up to our brain by a nerve that is in the back of our eye. This nerve is the only spot without the sensors so when you hit the right point you can't see a small area. The reason you can see with the right eye is because the eyes kind of combine their vision into one. Also the reason you can see orange instead of black is because our brain makes up for the empty space by using the surrounding color(s)

You'll notice that when his head disappears you are able to see the background orange colour and black bar at that area but not his head. That colour is actually imaginary. Our brain with respect to the context fills that part like the background colour. You can demonstrate this by putting something behind but you'll only see the background colour

I know why that works! It's because of the color of the backdrop. It's close enough to his skin tone that it engulfs his head as you move closer to the screen. The reason it didn't effect his hands is that they were almost always in front of his body. His grey shirt was a stark contrast from his skin tone, and thusly did not effect them. The reason the black bar was still visible was the same.

wrong, it's actually not a vanishing head, it's a head the turns orange. It's because of blind spots, each of your eyes have one, a blind spot is where the optic nerve connects to the eye. there cant be any light receptors there because the nerve is in the way, so you have two spots in your vision that are blank. the brain always tries to fill things in though, so it fills the blind spots with the colors surrounding it. so his head looks just like what would be behind his head, orange

Every eyeball has a dent in its optic nerve that doesn't receive light so we all have this one dot in our eyesight that is just our brain making inferences. Since face is too complicated to make up and put on our sight accurately our brain just puts what ever background is there. And since a bar is simply a line our brain can safely assume that the bar continues normally through our blindspot. You can simulate this another way by holding your thumb out and moving it about while your focused on something still, eventually, your thumb will dis appear. You're just not moving your face right.

It’s called blind spot of the eye. On one spot on the retina of the eye, images won’t be formed. This is called blind spot. Image formation on this point might not be experienced by us because we usually see with 2 eyes.

I don't see an explanation for this from Quirkology, so I will do the deed. Your eye has a blind spot. Yes, a blind spot. He asks you to close your right eye not only to focus on your left, but with your right eye, your vision stays the same as it sees your left eye's blind spot. He tells you to stare at the X and move closer until he disappears because your blind spot is on the same horizontal line as your central vision or where you look with your eye. When his head disappears, his head is in your blind spot. *Now here's where things get funky* If you've performed the illusion, his head seems to be completely gone and will reveal the orange background behind him, actually looking like it seemingly vanished. What's worse is that he proves it by using a black rod behind his head and doesn't seem to fade out like his head. *This is your brain trying to "fill in" its blind spot.* Your brain looks at what's around your blind spot to try to guess what's in it by guessing what would be there, then sending that information to you. The reason why the orange background is visible is because there is an orange background around your blind spot or his head. The reason why the black rod is visible is because your brain logically predicts the rest of the rod to be there because that's what's around your blind spot or behind his head. The reason why his head is NOT visible is because it is fully in your blind spot and your brain does not think it is there, therefore it does not fill it in. It's amazing when you know how.

Yeah .. I studied this when I was at 9th class. There is a spot called blind spot in our eye balls where the nerves are connected. At that point no image is created by the eye. Actually we all miss a spot in our views all the time by one eye , but other eye covers that area. So with the help of two eyes combination view, we can see that area anyway.
