It's impossible landing on any other card when following the instructions. Every turn he counts to a different number, sometimes you have five moves, sometimes three and so on, because he knows that this exact number of moves makes it impossible to land on a specific card. And this card is then removed :D

Simple math, iam a p&c guy here, the minimum steps required to reach the house in the first iteration is 8: if you track with unique position (no re entering same square) it will be even : if you chose to switch between 2 squares to reach the house since it's three steps away from the start, and any further steps will take higher than 8... I feel smart

I know I’m ruining the fun, but this is how it works: For every move you make, there’s two groups of sticky notes that you always switch with. One is this (with Xs): X __ X __ X __ X __ X And this is the other: __ O __ O __ O __ O __ If you make 5 moves, you switch between these two groups 5 times, and (assuming you started in the top right) you land on anywhere in group 2. Then, knowing you’re somewhere in group 2, he can remove any note from group 1. This repeats, until you get cornered in 2 squares. He isn’t predicting where you are, he’s knowing where you’re not. I hope that made sense.

Every move you move from an odd square to an even square or vice versa, and every odd amount of moves, you do that as well. I went through this a few times and realized the trick to this. Mathematically the amount of spaces he tells you to move, you cannot land on the ones he removes. It's not based on where your start. The logic is quite simple actually... just simple maths, if you noticed he only stopped counting at odd numbers. Thus your every move would either be in a plus (excluding middle) or a cross (including middle) of the original 9 squares. So as long as he picked a random square from the opposite direction (plus/cross). Try it yourself. If you're having a hard time understanding what I mean by the plus/cross, pretend the 9 squares is a portion of a chess bored. Out of the 9 squares, you have 5 black squares and 4 white squares. The white squares are the "+" (plus) and black squares are the "x" (cross). As long as he picks an odd numbers, it's impossible for you to stay on a black square if you start on a black square. Here's mathematical proof because I'm bored and for further explanation: (2n + 1) + (2n + 1) = 4n + 2 = 2(2n+1) All numbers multiple by 2 is even. 2n + (2n + 1) = 4n + 1 All numbers multiplied by 4 is even, add 1 makes it odd. For idiots: 2n = Even 2n + 1 = Odd What did this prove? Odd + Odd = Even, Even + Odd = Odd. Since he is always making you move by odd numbers (addition), you will always end up with the alternate. Thus you end up in the alternate black/white square or alternate plus/cross. For those wondering, we learn this at GCSE Maths in England... Not squares and shit but "proof".

A quick explanation as to how this works: Instead of boxes with different symbols, think of them as a chessboard or a checker board where it all alternates between white and black. To visualize this, best to have a piece of paper that you color in yourself where the following pattern emerges Black, white, black White, black, white Black, white, black 1. Everytime you move, you will move to a square that is not your color (Black to white, and white to black) 2. If you are going to move an even number of moves, you will go back to the color you started off with 3. If odd, then you won't change back to the color you started off with. He just picked off where you definitely wont be based on the color. Here's a quick breakdown 1. The starting color is a black square, move to a white square, either below (neutral face) or to the left (O) 2. 7 steps (an odd number), You will end up in a black colored box (V, wave, arrow, smiley) 3. 3 steps, you will end up in a white box (O, neutral, Q) 4. 7 steps, you will end up in a black box (Wave, Arrow ,Smile) 5. 5 steps, you will end up in a white box (Q, neutral face) 6. 9 steps, you will end up in a black box (Wave, smile) 7. 3 steps, you will end up in a white box (only the Q left) 8. With the wave removed, your only option is to go to the smile for your last move

After 12 years, I figured it out. You start on square #3. Each move, you can only go from odd to even or vice versa. So he'll lure you into an even square for example and remove any odd square and repeat.

Well first of all please write down the moves you made because there should be a mistake in them (you moved one more or one less probably) Imagine paining the tiles like a chess board. The Q l, crossed O, house and unhappy face are black, while the others are white Notice how every time he asks you to move an uneven number of times (1,3,7). Every time you move you change the colour of your tile from black to white or the other way around. Basically this way he will not be able to tell which tile you are on (unless there are only 2) but he will be able to tell the colour of your tile (black or white) So what he does is that he removes a tile from the opposite colour. If you followed the rules and you moved the required amount of times, you can't end up on the tile he removes.

Then we get to move 7 times, so… from either of those two tiles we may have started from, there’s no possible way to land on the house card he removes. No matter how many times you try this test, no matter which 7 moves you make. Because of the number of times we’re allowed to move, you can never land on that tile while following the rules. That’s the reason he can confidently say, “now I’m guessing you didn’t land here”. The longer the game goes on, it SHOULD get harder to predict all of the possible places you could have landed. But because he’s also removing tiles as he goes, and since we can’t move across the tiles he’s removing along the way, it forces us to move certain ways and makes our moves even easier to calculate. All he does is continue that process on and on, pulling tiles that there was no possible way to land on given the number of moves he gave us, until he’s eliminated all tiles except for the ones we WERE able to stop on. It seems wild at first until you understand what he did.

Thats why its easy to predict where there is noone and as he removes the tiles eventually predict where everyone is.
