Based on one of my favorite novels of all time - and it does NOT disappoint! Fantastic cast (and Olivia Cook is perfectly cast as the cunning, beautiful and amoral Becky Sharp). Is she a villain or just a scrappy and realistic woman of her time, with a handsome but feckless husband, who did what she had to in order to survive? Superior to the Reese Witherspoon film, trust me. Fantastic television!

You're correct! Becky is not meant to be nearly as beautiful as Reese Witherspoon. It is her charm, wit, and vivacity that wins over the bourgeoisie of her time NOT her looks.

Although the plot did seem at times a bit scattered, it overall produced a very modern and exhilarating atmosphere. Imagine the all the most exciting parts of all your favorite dramas packed into 8 episodes.

What a great novel by William Makepeace Thackeray ! The thing which makes this novel great and so enjoying is its depiction of reality of human life. There is no moral preaching; just showing what we humans are in reality. This is why the character of Becky Sharp is so powerful. I find the most enjoying scene in the book as the one when Miss Crawley and Sir Pitt are told that Becky’s husband is their son Rowdon; their described reaction is so amusing. And then the great closing lines of the novel: "Ah! Vanitas Vanitatum! which of us is happy in this world? Which of us has his desire? or, having it, is satisfied?-come, children, let us shut up the box and the puppets, for our play is played out."

Music in the movies is there to help us feel emotions. While classical music might give a movie more authenticity, the modern music make the whole era seem more real to us by bringing everything closer to our own experiences. Also, using different styles of music give a much wider selection of moods too choose from

Olivia certainly does a good job and the rest of the cast and production values are good. I guess when it comes down to it what I don't like about it is the story itself. Palin keeps warning us this isn't a cheerful tale but I refused to believe it. He wasn't kidding though. Things don't really turn out that well for anybody. I guess you expect a novel from the 19th century to have a happy ending but that was not the case. The whole movie is pretty damn dreary and unpleasant.

Could someone explain to me what was the point of Becky moving to Matildas house for "the come up" only to marry the man she kept dodging at his fathers house? The same man who has no money, no skill, no real standing, and they end up running out on landlords because they don't have the rent.

Rawdon was supposed to inherit Matilda's money. Becky was hoping she would forgive his elopement and keep him in her will. She would have married his father if he had asked her first.
