I converted a 99 Astro, and drove it across the US and back… just got back. Mine has the windows all around, so I don’t have as much storage, and I need to tweak it, but I love it. You are so right… you definitely need a comfortable bed ! I think my whole conversion cost about $300, including gear. I do like your screen idea… I’m going to do that for next summer. Cool van…

So many questions lol. I have in my driveway an 03 Astro cargo that is destined to be my home. It is a 4x4 conversion and is completely empty. You give excellent detail I am rethinking my bed already one of my problems is no roof rack but i got some ideas. Excellent vid.

Cool. Astros are small keep in mind.. something I realized in hindsight, so be super detailed in how you create space!

Doing a basic build myself. '01 2wd, white, windows on the rear and one on the sliding door. Pull out bed that is removable (for state inspection, don't need to add seatbelts), sink made from a chaffing pan and pump faucet, 2 slice toaster oven, porta John, single agm battery, 100w solar at the moment, and a small portable tv with a knock off NES for when it rains at the campground. Motorcycle carrier on the back, toss in my Merlin M4 dulcimer and a couple of collapsible fishing rods. People ask me why not just get an RV? Because, I'm making it to my specs, and cheaper to insure. Not a permanent house, just something for my outdoor adventures.

Nice set up. For flex solar panels from all I READ, you have to have airflow underneath or the burn out.

Thanks! Yep rookie error on the flexible panel. I think I’m just going to bite the bullet and get regular panels. I’ve been without panels for like 4 months now!!

Make sure you have an air gap between the flexible panel and the roof of your van! That way the heat can escape and not overheat the panel :-)

What do you use for your mattress? Also what is the length between your floor and top of mattress? I see you can still sit up nicely!

Hey, new subscriber, is that an acid battery at 7:20 if so it needs plenty of outside ventilation, very caustic vapors, will kill☠️ same w propane tank. But I still like the rusticness of your build🤟

Ya it’s a lead acid battery. I just figured since the roof vent was always open and the seals on the back doors are drafts I’d be ok?

@@adamruzzo Traditionally, yeah. It'd vent itself through the roof fan or each time you open the back. Chemically, while charging, it produces hydrogen and oxygen. So basically unless you were snowed in, had everything sealed up tight for days, never got out to pee, ect. And then fired up your stove or candles or bong or whatever, yeah if the fumes didn't get ya the explosion 💥 would. But I'm no expert, ask Alexa what she says 🤪 I'm into car audio and they say having wet cell lead acid batteries in the trunk is bad. To use lithium but they're a bit expensive. So maybe that'd be an option down the road? I guess if you have no side affects, you should be fine. Just tryna look out for ya🤟 Can't wait to see some more vidz!
