I stealth camp in my car. The great advantage is that it just blends in with all the other cars in a street. No one bats an eyelid. Being single, toilets are catered for very easily and never an issue. It's amazing what can be done with some doggy bags, a bucket and a comfort bottle...

I was forced to camp in a city out of a car for a few days when my little van broke down in Dunedin, NZ. Took showers by sneaking in to the 24/7 gym (there was no-one to buy an entry from) and also used the showers in the University of Otago. It wasn't really stealth camping though, since my car was at the repair shop and they were nice enough to roll the car out of the shop when they weren't working on it for me to sleep in. All in all a nice experience, minus the repair bill!

@ianwylie90643 жыл бұрын
the toilet situation can be -open rear doors and use a tarp as an extension on the van (with the door or doors, open of course depending on the situation, you then have shelter and separation from both the outside world and the inside of the van. small portable loo. mobile shower, whatever. the tarp can be shaped and stiffened with canes into panels where required with the minimum of effort and no real storage issues. it can all be done. there's no need to 'skank it out' basically with the door, or doors open at the rear only a cover is needed for above and around to use as is pleasing. It does not attract attention and is really quite inconspicuous.

Thanks for more entertaining videos. I do do stealth camping myself. It's just me, so I bought a Ford Galaxy Titanium. With all but one of the rear seats down you have space for a single bed, and luggage space as well, and the one rear seat that is left up has a table so you can have meals, or watch TV on the tablet etc. Travelled 4000 miles around Scotland and the Outer Hebridies in May, the advantage of it just being a car with factory fitted blacked out rear windows no-one looks twice at it parked up at the side of the road or a car park.

As Steve S says, be very careful returnung to your van intoxicated, this can be a problem if parked in the street in the UK or in europe. The way around this is to have a different door key to the ignition key, (easy done on old v dubs) then you lock the ignition key away somewhere hidden in the van and take just the door keys. That way if the police collar you hand them the key to prove you cant start the van, its no guarantee but with politeness it will go along way, just deny all knowledge of ignition key location apart form you have left it with someone else.

Glad your first time stealth camping in a city was a success. We spent a whole year living in London in our van stealth camping. London street life was full of crime lol, but saved us thousands of rent lol. Unlike you getting ready for the wedding in the van I just brought my clothes to work and would get ready there lol. We just accepted that we didnt shower when Gyms shut and the pee bottle was just our daily reality haha. We had double digit attempted break ins while living in London, van grafittid, tyres slashed, and once an angry mob showed up at the van because we parked somewhere with neighbourhood watch that didnt approve of us haha, but still wouldn't change it for the world! Now we are FINALLY out on the road enjoying travelling in the van in Spain, very different from London Street van life hahah. You both looked fabulous in your wedding attire BTW xxx

Would definitely do stealth camping in a city with the right van. We stealth camped in Finland once when we went to see the rallying there. All the rally teams and press had booked up all the hotels so we had one night where we decided to sleep in our hired Renault Clio in a covered car park, in sleeping bags with the front seats reclined all the way back. My wife was woken up by some strange noises in the night which turned out to be skateboarders using the car park ramps 😄 I slept all the way through and it's still one of the best night's sleep I've ever had 🙂

Agree with you about the toilet situation. That's why I was urging you to consider a LWB Sprinter or Boxer because you can fit a (snug) toilet/shower room. Then again, these vans do stick out more in the city, they're not very stealthy. I usually stay in pub car parks (by arrangement) or campsites. As your other commentators have pointed out, drink-driving laws govern streets and laybys so that rules me out, especially at a wedding! Bristol has Baltic Wharf campsite which is handy but I believe it's facing closure. The smallest van I've see with everything in it is Jits (Jits into the Sunset YT). But the bed is not long enough for tall people. You've done well with your van: it does have a lot going for it and it will have a good resale value if you decide to get something bigger.
@TravelBeans3 жыл бұрын
Aw we love Jits! So many home comforts fit into a relatively small space. There are definitely pros for going with a bigger van.. although, the smaller van is great for days like today when we were able to fit under height restrictions at places with no problems. Thanks so much for the kind words about the van :) so excited to get all the curtains and finishing touches done on it so it feels more like home 😊

Used to live in my van around Brighton, think best places were to park up by leisure centre, then get to use their showers and toilets, or would use the gyms, for toilet use, there were plenty of public toilets, however, during covid time it with places closed it was a bit of a arse pain lol 😂... Ace video 👍 havent tried stealth camping yet but we have a thetford 165 in Betty which we use! No issues apart from showering, it we could only use ours in the wilderness! 😆😆

Great video. I wouldn't camp without a loo though, stealth or on a site. The need to get up in the night or early morning will highlight this as you age. 50+ & Peter Prostate starts taking the p***, literally. Shame your RnR bed seat won't fit sideways behind the front seats. You could put the kitchen down one side at the back and a loo room down the other (with an extendable top like they have in Eriba caravans).

This was a great episode. Emma is beyond lovely! And you summed up some of the pros and cons of stealth camping especially without a toilet and shower. Keep up your great work!
