Great advice. We had a 2000 Eurovan camper that we loved; lots of repair folks where we live, so never a problem...until the big problem occurred in Arches NP. Would have to be towed into CO since local Moab mechanics didn't work on Eurovans, with no guarantee it could be repaired while we figured out how to get home, etc. Ended up renting a U-Haul truck with a tow dolly on the back and got home with the camper. Easy repair, but an expensive trip and didn't even get to see the Arches!! LOL

But We feel we must have all those things we don't need. After researching van life for the past year with help from you and others I realize a lot of the things I thought I would want I could do without or build in a way as to add at a later date if so needed. So I could get away with "Half Assing "it now🤔 and Ass the other half later🤦🏻♂,if that makes sense. Thanks Dom.👍🏻

Haha, love the use of the weekly expression here. But yes, you are right - After a little time in your van, you realize half, if not most of the things you thought you wanted are completely useless.

So many good points here --- and I was initially reluctant to do things Half-ass, but when I figured out how much money$$$$, time, and emotional investment it would cost to do things "all out" or Full-ass, I decided I could save a bundle both before and during my travels and just make do with my older Kia Sorento. I'll let you know how it works out from South America one day... Cheers!...from North Vancouver

@@vanlifesagas I hope to depart this time next year. Trying to spend time learning Spanish from almost zero (knowing some French is a little helpful). Living in Vancouver, I've been down the Oregon Coast many times, so I likely want to go thru Montana, and down the Eastern Seaboard -- it's difficult to plan this because the issues in those border areas (to Mx) are constantly changing re safety issues/advisories. Who knows how things will look next year? Pretty sure I'll do a "no build" in the Sorento, other than removing the two "jump seats" that are unusable anyways ( aha "7 seater", lol, sure). Kind of like back-packing but with a cavernous vehicle and a lot of hostel/ hotel/AirBnb comfort along the way.

Im wanting to fully live in my van since i only work weekends and i love the idea of just being able to take off. However its just me and my two cats. So its oddly made things easier to map out what i need and what sort of design im going for. Simple. Some frills like solar cause I'm a nerd who cant give up their anime while on the road and id like to watch things most of the day lol. Also oddly custom cabinets both to hold my cats litter but also a built in cat hutch to lock em up when were on the move for long distances.

Wanting to save money, I kept an eye on the EU L7E-C vehicles. But with inflation, options and extra battery pack; it hits €28,500. And going for the camper version, that would be €36,500. But it would charge the car with solar. So I still keep it in mind. With small electric vans going from €50K and larger from €60K. The Electricbrands XBus is a unique thing. Not half-assed at that :)

Ohhh those are nice. Brand new electrical trucks aren't going to be cheap though. However, I feel like the future is somewhere in that direction.

Hey Dom, I don't want to write an essay, at the same time, don't want to make a half-assed comment. On our way to Florida (from Kentucky) last year to visit my daughter, we stopped at a Alabama rest area, parked across from a 4x4 Sprinter. Talked to the Guy a while, then said "sorry for being rude, but can I ask how much you have invested in your rig?" He thought a bit, and said between 275k and 285k. He had all the bells and whistles, all installed by someone else. We were in "Serenity", our '09 Chevy shuttle bus, that I converted myself. We have spent (invested ?) 17K, including 3 engine repairs. (#1, paid local mechanic 1k to replace weeping water pump, he didn't properly secure fan clutch wires, so when we were in South Dakota in a heat wave #2 paid 450 dollars to have wiring repaired. #3 on another trip to Florida the EGR valve became completely stopped up in Alabama, where I have good friends, one is a good diesel mechanic with all of the tools. In a Chevy pick-up, replacing a EGR valve is a 8 hour job. With my help and another friends help, the three of us had a three day nightmare. Vans are hard to work on ! You can see the bolt you gotta get out, but can't reach it. Contort yourself so you can reach it, now you can't see it. My friend, at the end of the nightmare asked me if 500 dollars was more than I could afford for his labor, I said yes and paid him 800, and that I knew it wasn't really enough. With parts it was less than 1.4k for that repair.) We average 2 months a year in "Serenity", so I reckon we have pretty good value for our investment. End of half assed essay.
@vanlifesagas Жыл бұрын
You just won the award for the Whole Ass Comment of the Year. Yeh, vans can be a pain in the ass. And yeh, if you can afford a 275k Sprinter Van, go for it. But at the end of the day, I just realize it rarely makes sense to put that much money in a van!!! Cool that you repair vans yourself though! Or with a friend!!

Can you please do a video like this about shuttle buses because I bought like a disabled shuttle bus and I’m already having problems I need to know so much more than I thought I needed to know all I was thinking about decorating it on the inside buying humongous tires that could kill a person if they would just drop it on their toe by lifting it then I was just thinking about oh I have to have a light that lightens up when I come close to the door that was very important right and then I was thinking oh I can’t do this without having a space toilet that cost me $2000 oh I must have a golden shower I must have a big and deep sink I must have a human size fridge with a humongous freezer. I don’t even eat ice cream but I must have this. I must paint it pink on the inside the navy park, see pink floor that exploded after driving it off, then I was like I must build a little office inside that I never use. I must have a bedroom that I can change into a living room that I never have time to do or the energy to do. Then I was like I must have a chandelier that broke after driving it from my house to the gas station and then I was like this is impossible if I don’t have the best spring mattress that I cut in half and it fell apart and then I was like I must have a rug because I have epoxy floor and it could be slippery so I stepped on the rug and I flew on my head I really need help please because I thought I must had all these things and now I’m poor and I’m sitting with this thing in the storage that I pay $300 a month to keep it there and by the way it’s like three hours away from my house.

Yes, this!! Don't buy an old crappy thing for romantic reasons! The romance fades quick on the 8th trip to the mechanic on a 4 day weekend trip. Haha! Also don't buy a van at all, probably. Rent one for your first bunch of trips and really only make the big plunge if you REALLY get hooked.

I made mistake (4). Freaking Westfalia needs T4 engine repair. Heads alone are 4500. Engine rebuilding is ~10k. Even if I switch the engine it's 10k. I so regret I did that, why I was such a fool, OMG :((((((
