Sometimes you need to sit on an idea for a while to allow inspiration a chance to strike. That was the case with this build. The structure of the candelabra was the easy part, figuring out how to hide its individual parts was far more difficult. Thankfully, inspiration, and a bit of hot glue, stepped in to help me finish this pvc pipe candelabra prop.

Regarding the bubbles on the surface of the casting, putting the mould on a board and dropping it a couple of times might encourage the bubbles to let go and float up. I think I have seen this technique used for silicone and resin casting. Gently warming up the mould with the heat gun might also help. That way the glue won't immediately freeze to the mould on contact.

This technique reminds me of when I used to mess around with school PVA glue on glass with coloured pencil shavings to create coloured, translucent medallions as a kid.
@VanOaksProps
@VanOaksProps Жыл бұрын
I don't know that those were a result of bubbles in the casting. I think there was a chemical reaction between the rubberized bed liner and the hot glue that created them. But to your point, yes, dropping your castings before they set will definitely encourage the release of bubbles caught in your resin.

I don’t know that spray foam will give you good copies because the foam, without downward pressure, will expand where there is the least amount of resistance. And with downward pressure it won’t have enough air contact to solidify. So you’d end up with a uncured foamy mess.

Greetings everyone. So I have a question about the hot glue technique. So I live in sunny, hot Florida where hot glue isn't really ideal and could become a mess (especially when it's stored in my incredibly hot attic over the summer.) What would you recommend to avoid such messes? Would you use another resin like the uv resin after applying the hot glue or would you use a alternative resin for the hot glue parts?

@@VanOaksProps Thank you for taking the time to reply back to me and so quickly. I have a old, store made, talking pumpkin prop where it's eyes and mouth would move as it talked until after one Halloween when it stopped working as well as it did before. When I opened it up, the maker had used hot glue on the string and the rotating wheel that operated the face; hot glued them back together again. After the repair, I put it back outside and a little while later, it had the same problems again so I assumed that I did it wrong or the heat had ruined my repairs again. Anyways, thank you for helping me out and it's always a pleasure watching your videos.

So, I've been trying my hand at recreating this prop, but the hot glue appliques refuse to cooperate. The piece which wraps around the candelabra arm keeps popping off on me. I lightly sanded the PVC before the assembly, but all I can think is to hit it again with a lower grit. I'm worried that'll create too much texture and will become unsightly after painting, though. Any ideas on how to get a stronger bond?
